About this property

The Old Abbey Farmhouse

The Old Abbey Farmhouse is a beautiful Grade II listed property, located on the grounds of Quarr Abbey which is home to a community of Catholic Benedictine monks. The Farmhouse is adjacent to the ruins of an ancient Cistercian abbey, which was founded in 1132 by Baldwin de Redvers, Earl of Devon and fourth Lord of the Isle of Wight. The site of this ancient abbey lies midway between Fishbourne and the village that grew up around the royal quarry at Binstead. It was from this quarry that the abbey took its name: Quarreria – Quarr. Hence its original title was: The Abbey of St Mary in the Quarries. This quarry had been in use since the Norman Conquest, providing stone for Hampshire churches and also most notably the cathedrals of Winchester and Chichester.

On entering through the eighteenth-century front doorway of the Farmhouse, a bright hallway opens to both the dining room and living room. The dining room, with a wood burner, has seating for four guests. The kitchen has newly fitted units with a dishwasher, oven and hob. There is a small utility room with washing machine next to the kitchen. Off the kitchen is the bathroom with a roll top bath, basin and toilet. Access to the garden is through the kitchen which also has a small, enclosed seating area, perfect for an afternoon drink in the sun. The garden is enclosed and is suited for a small dog to enjoy. The living room is a bright and airy room with another wood burner and Smart TV. The views across the farmers’ fields are inspiring, a peaceful place to sit and enjoy. The staircase leads up to a landing and two bedrooms. The master bedroom has a double bed and a recently fitted ensuite with shower cubical. The second bedroom has a king size bed. Outside the rear garden there is a patio area for guests to enjoy an afternoon in the sun or an evening under the stars after you have taken in the sights of the Abbey grounds.

The more modern Quarr Abbey, built from 1907 to 1914, is an architectural wonder, constructed entirely of brick. Its magnificent church, a jewel of the Isle of Wight, is open to the public from 5.00 am to 8.30 pm every day. Church services, sung by the monks in Gregorian Chant, are held throughout each day.

Many different activities are held on the Abbey grounds throughout the year. If walking is something you enjoy there are many public walkways, including a woodland walk. The abbey has an Art Gallery with different local artists exhibiting each week. It also has a Farm Shop with a large variety of goods for sale, a Monastery Shop selling religious books, cards and rosaries, and a Visitor Centre explaining about the life and history of the monastic life at Quarr. Why not stop by the Quarr Abbey Tea Shop and enjoy homemade cakes or a light meal in its beautiful tea garden. Then you can feed the pigs, always a popular attraction!

Ryde town centre is 2 miles from the property where you can find many restaurants, pubs, cafés and shops. The nearest ferry terminal is at Fishbourne which is a short ten-minute walk from the abbey along its bridle path.

Old Abbey Farmhouse

Returning guest to the farmhouse for my wife and I and Archie the cat. Everything perfect as usual. The building, location, facilities are great and for us it is hard to beat hence a returning customer. Looking forward to arranging our next visit later this year. TV reception could be improved as indoor aerial is not sufficient.

Superb property

This was our 3rd stay at this property. The house is nicely decorated and is in a quiet location, there is everything that you need here. We were welcomed by the housekeeper, who had supplied an amazing welcome pack, enough for breakfast, so late night arrivals won't go hungry. We will definitely be returning to this superb property. Lovely house and location

Maintained to a very high standard and lots of kitchen utensils and all the things you need. Very quiet location but only a ten minute drive away from Ryde. Lots of places to walk from the property. Tv reception was dependant on weather and WiFi is not capable for TV streaming, only for browsing the internet as my teenage son found out.

The farmhouse was stunning and absolutely everything was provided for

The farmhouse was stunning and absolutely everything was provided for. The monastery was amazing with beautiful Latin services. The monks and everyone were so friendly. Beautiful and peaceful surroundings with great walks. Lots of people stopped to admire the farmhouse and we were proud to say we lived there (even though it was for only a week). Great little gift shops and we loved feeding the pigs. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We would definitely recommend and may be back ourselves in the not too distant future. Thank you. What an amazing place

What an amazing place. It was so serene and beautiful. Place was spotless and furnished/equipped to a high standard. The abbey grounds were lovely to walk the dog in. Waking up to the sounds of lambs bleating and birds was delightful. The walk to the abbey tearoom was short and the tea room amazing, slightly longer walk to the Fishbourne pub with the dog was also worth it. Truly an amazing holiday

Absolutely loved this cottage

Absolutely loved this cottage. Impeccable cleanliness. Very comfortable with lovely countryside views. Very dark at night to assist sleep. Very quiet except for the bleating of the sheep opposite and the occasional trekker hiking along the bridleway outside. Lovely to sit in the walled garden to have a coffee. Very well furnished and equipped with a useful welcome pack. If weather is bad, tv reception can be intermittent but who cares when you can look outside at the lovely surroundings. On the coastal path if you like walking/cycling. I would highly recommend.

The getaway farmhouse was just lovely. Two wonderful wood burning fireplaces, wonderfully equipped kitchen, dog friendly, beautiful walks out your doorstep, pub within short walk, Fishbourne and Ryde walks accessible and peace, quiet and beautiful scenery made this long weekend spot on the top of our list. The Abbey is right up they way with a wonderful little cafe and farm shop. Ideal place for a couplesmall family. One bathroom upstairs, in one of the bedrooms, so would need to be sharedgo downstairs to second bathroom. Water pressure for showering was amazing.

Fantastic place

We had a wonderful week at the Old Abbey Farmhouse. A hamper of goods awaited us, which was a delight. The place had everything we needed. There was so much to see and do locally and we enjoyed seeing the sheep outside our window and visiting the Abbey pigs and farm shop. There’s a nice walk down to the shoreline and when the tide is out you can walk along the beach. We definitely will be back.

Best by far.

This is the best property that we have stayed in by far. We were met by Claire, who showed us around and how everything worked. The house is tastefully decorated throughout and very comfortable. The welcome pack was amazing, things that you actually need and use, much better than previous properties, when we have got just a bottle of wine.( Didn't drink it, took it home, still in the wine rack!]. The house is in a very peaceful area, in the Abbey grounds, only a short walk to the Abbey and a 10 to 15 minute walk to the pub at Fishbourne, also a very pleasant walk through the woods to the beach. We felt so relaxed there that we didn't want to leave, we will certainly be returning here.
