Great House in a Great Location

My husband and I decided to book this house for my birthday trip to visit New River Gorge with our dogs. This house was perfect! It was very cozy, and stocked with everything we needed for cooking meals. Our dogs loved the big backyard and we both loved sitting on the porch after a long day of hiking. It's also very near to the grocery store, restaurants, and a coffee shop. It was a great stay, and we hope to be able to book it again in the future!

The property was cute and cozy, but there was broken glass outside the front door. The rock sidewalk was unlevel and tricky. Although it was well stocked there wasn't any coffee. Wasps in the bedroom and a hornets nest on the back deck. It was quiet for being in town and people are friendly there. Thank you.

A Gem!

We found A's cottage to be comfortable, spotless, and conveniently located. It was very quiet during our long-weekend stay, even with the windows open at night! We especially enjoyed sitting on the deck after an amazing meal at Ample Pizza in Hico. Thanks for the attention to detail and customer service, we will be back!

Great location with great amenities

Had a very nice stay at this older property with great amenities. Comfy bed, decent kitchen, excellent location, quiet neighborhood, great AC and internet. Owners were excellent and responsive. A little quirky but had everything we wanted. Great for families.

Not a great experience

While the house was well stocked and well appointed I experienced multiple issues that would prevent me from ever renting again…. 1. I had to reach out to the host for a lockbox code. Everything I received said I would receive this the day before check in. I was traveling in from a far and making plans and it was only after I reached out that they provided… 2. Something is going on with the house next door. It is sketchy and unkept with grass over a foot tall. One late afternoon a car from the county with Forencics parked out front of our house for a few hours. They waited on a pickup truck to take things out of the yard. It made my wife very uncomfortable that CSI had something going on there. 3. The last day we were there we came back to no power. After a few hours I reached out to the host to tell her of this and to provide some type of update. She got back and told me a car had hit a power pole. She then typed “ Sorry” that short response to me was curt and lacked any empathy. I would have been mortified that I had tenants with no power. No attempt was made to reach out to us after that. We ended up going to bed early not eating any dinner with temperatures over 80 in the house. Full disclosure the lack of attentiveness bothered me. We set the alarm for early the next day and so we could leave. I realize the outage was no fault of the host but they were not being inconvenienced nor were still financially getting all their monies for the rental. No credit was offered…..

Pleasent Stay

The property is located in a mixed area of single and multi-family residences, proximate to some commercial uses. It is convenient to the area's attractions, services, restaurants, etc. It was clean and well kept. It is an updated older building that emits a comfortable, homey feel. Living and sleeping space was more than ample. The kitchen was appropriately equipped. ALL GOOD.

Mid-week getaway

We stayed Tue-Fri and it was the perfect location to be able to do and see lots in NRG NP - hiking, paddleboarding and The Bridge Walk. Accommodations were just as expected and the neighborhood was quiet. We walked to Tom's Diner for a post-dinner ice cream treat twice during our stay and then along the White Oak Rail Trail for a leisurely walk back to the cottage. Highly recommend!

Visit to New River Gorge

We loved our stay at this cottage. It was clean and comfortable and central to all the things we wanted to see and do in the area. Our Golden Retriever River had a great time in the fenced back yard. The extra treats and supplies that we discovered upon checking in were a nice touch.

Great stay in a great neighborhood

The house was very nice, the owners had left snacks & toiletries if needed, & it gave it a warm touch. We met the owner while in town & he was extremely friendly & lots of good recommendations. Everyone we encountered in town were very friendly as well. We would definitely recommend this property to others.

Fantastic experience!

It was like staying at a good friends house while they weren’t home. The gifts of snacks and water were welcomed up come arrival, the kids loved the plethora of games available, the place was well stocked with “oh I forgot!” Things like detergent, condiments, dish soap etc etc. plenty super soft towels, cozy furnishings, walking distance to coffee shop and 10 minutes to ACE. Even the binder of menus and things to do was appreciated.

Amazing

From just thinking about renting this house and having questions the hosts were so nice. Quick replies, nice and helpful. The house is amazing. They have thought of everything. All you need is to enjoy your stay. Even the gift basket was on point. This interaction, house and location made our mini vacation so relaxing and we didn't want to leave. Would very much recommend and would stay with them / their property again.

Great place near Ace Adventure !

We had a great family vacation at A's Cottage. The location was perfect: it was only about a 10 min drive to Ace, the reason for our trip. We loved that we could walk to local diners, the grocery store etc. Oak Hill is about 10 min from Fayetteville, a charming town w/ antique shops, coffee shops (I love Cathedral Cafe!), & more. A's Cottage was the perfect place for us to relax. We especially appreciated: the snacks they left us, the beach towels we could use at Ace, the back porch with fenced in yard, and the lovely, comfy quilts. One thing I feel obligated to share: If you're bringing your dog, be aware that there are 5 German Shepards on Washington St that may be unleashed, aggressive, & w/o an owner. I have nothing anything against the breed- our last dog was a sweet, gentle GS and we adored her. We also know this is beyond the owners' control. But after our experience, we feel we should share: My husband took our 40 lb dog for a walk. On Washington St, the 5 dogs were on the porch of their home. Three of them ran at my husband and dog, in attack mode (all they had been doing was walking). One of them bit our dog, not to mention terrified her. My husband is a big guy and was able to scream and eventually get them to back off and he & our dog got away. We told the owners & a K9 officer we ran into. The cop said they're well aware of the dogs and their owner. We'd hate for this to happen to anyone else. Maybe just avoid that street/area if you have a dog?

About the host

Hosted by Lora and Leonard Keaveny

Host profile image
This cottage was our first home when we moved to West Virginia. We are hard working people who work in the area I am a physician and my husband is a teacher. We have two children and two dogs. We live in WV because we love outdoor activities and being close to family. Our son spent 3 years in this little home in Oak Hill and did not want to move out when we built our house, so we named the cottage A's Cottage after him. We love this area and the people in it and hope that you enjoy Southern WV as much.

Why they chose this property

Since we moved out of the house in 2006 we have rented to people by the month. We have found that these renters do not take great care of the property so each time repaint clean up and rent again. We have had great success with renters on vacation, they enjoy the property and take care of it. We also rent out other houses in the area including our main home, so we stay in this home from time to time, so it works well for our family.

What makes this property unique

This home has a large fenced in yard. Even though you are in town it seems very private. The best part is sitting on the back covered porch and listening to the birds in the morning with a cup of coffee.
