Location:
Cyprus is the Mediterranean’s third largest island and has a population of 1 million people. The island is divided up into six districts, and Villa Thora is found in the district of Paphos. Paphos used to be the capital city of the island and has a rich history – widely known for its connection to the goddess Aphrodite. Paphos is also UNESCO world heritage site, as well as being a popular tourist destination, with lots of cultural landmarks and attractions to visit.
Here are some of our favourite places to visit in the Paphos area:
Kato Paphos Archaeological Park
Perfect for history enthusiasts, Paphos archaeological park contains some beautiful ancient ruins you won’t want to miss out on. You’ll be able to visit the houses of Dionysus, Theseus, Aion and Orpheus where you’ll see stunningly preserved mosaic floors with scenes from Greek myths, such the famous Theseus and the minotaur. There are also the remains of a Roman marketplace, small Roman theatre. Take lots of water with you and sunscreen as you’ll be very exposed to the hot Cypriot sun here. But you won’t need lots of cash because entrance is only 4.50 euros per person – such a steal!
Paphos Old Town
Have you been dreaming of wandering through picturesque streets, stopping to take photos for the gram at every turn, and browsing quaint artisanal boutiques? Then the Old Town of Paphos is what your dreams are made of. The characteristic Cypriot town and was voted European Capital of Culture in 2017, highlighting its status as a true gem of the Mediterranean. There are lots of nice cafes and bars you can stop at to enjoy a quick lunch or a cocktail, plus you can marvel at fantastic views thanks to the town’s high up location.
Tomb of the Kings
Another one for the history buffs, the Tombs of the Kings is a necropolis dating back to the 4th century BC. It’s constructed in a series of caves and chambers carved out of sandstone rock, and while there aren’t actually any kings emtombed in the cemetery, you will find graves of local dignitaries and high-ranking officials. At only 2.50 euros to enter, this attraction is another complete bargain and also offers gorgeous views out across the Mediterranean Sea.
