About this property

Spectacular Mountainside Villa Near Antigua

The beautiful Spanish colonial villa was designed and furnished by an artist. The property is set into the mountainside of the extinct Volcan de Agua and looks out over the rolling hills and valley below and two other volcanoes. Surrounded by farmland with compesinos walking their burrows to the fields, the property is a refuge from the bustle of urban life. Birds serenade the sunrise.

There are three bedrooms, with the master suite taking up the whole second floor and the other two guest rooms on the ground floor in a separate wing. From the master bath you can watch Fuego erupting or the fireworks in the valley. There are terraces and seating on all four sides so you can sit in sun or shade or take in different views depending on preference and time of day. A stepped fountain 'stream' with flowering plants and fish is in the central courtyard where you can sit out for meals or on the back terrace with umbrella.

The spacious gardens tended daily by the local gardener are filled with flowers you can cut to have in the house. Open lawns for children to play in the walled compound and endless walks through the countryside outside the walls.

Within the spacious walled compound are two other homes not visible from my house, in addition to the guard/doorman who provides 24 hour security and his wife who cleans the house three days a week (additional maid service can be arranged). The two bedrooms on the ground floor share a bathroom between them which also serves as the guest bathroom.

I recently built a beautiful wood fired sauna that seats 6-8 people or two people can lie down on the long benches. When you step outside, there is a cold shower. We have been having sauna parties and have friends over to relax and then have supper together.

All year round one eats outside on the terraces by the cascading fountain or in the warm patio under the umbrella on the patio off the dining room. Downtown Antigua with its restaurants, sites and night life is only 12 minutes away by car.

Please check the availability calendar before contacting me as my place is usually rented months in advance.

A comfortable but magical experience

This property really is like a fairytale property due to the fact of just how beautiful it really is. Catherine the onwer of the VRBO was quick to answer my questions and was an incredible host, I couldn't have asked for a better stay. Perfect for a couple getaway or for family time. The best part is going to Antigua for the day and coming back to the house because it's so comfortable to stay in. This is a great place to stay!

A beautiful home with beautiful views of Acatenango and Fuego

Catherine’s home was a great home base for our family for the month of June. It’s about a 10 minute drive through coffee fincas to Antigua and the house has gorgeous views of the volcanoes. We loved sitting on the large upper deck and watching the lava flow from Volcan de Fuego on clear nights. The gardens surrounding the home are lovely and the caretakers are kind. Please note that you must be willing to drive to stay here as Ubers will drop off at the property but are rarely available to pick up at the property. Catherine graciously allows her guests to rent her (manual) vehicle for a nominal fee. Catherine was kind and easy to communicate with and gave us detailed information about the property before we arrived. Catherine also kindly arranged a ride from our hotel in Guatemala City with Roberto for $40, and we later hired to take us on a trip to Tikal at the end of the month. We highly recommend Roberto and he speaks English fluently. This is a great place to stay if you plan to spend time in Antigua.

Outstanding location. Perfect get away.

A very safe and private enclave that allows a family the tranquility needed along with easy access to Cuidad Vieja and Antigua. Layout of property is excellent and wood fired sauna is a big hit. Catherine is expeditious on her replies and having the two bodyguards (Kiara and Barley!!) made our stay that much more enjoyable. If you love dogs, you will love these 2. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a well maintained home with easy access to Antigua

Great Home for Enjoying Guatemala

My wife and I stayed in Catherine's home for two and a half months while we explored and volunteered in Guatemala. It was incredible. The location of the home is about ten minutes outside the city of Antigua in a very small town called Cuidad Vieja. The small town is much quieter, cheaper and less polluted then Antigua. The property sits in fields of coffee and avocado trees where my wife and I along with Catherine's two dogs explored for up to two hours a day. You can see volcanoes from your bedroom balcony. There are horses on the property. Beautiful gardens. We plan on having large family gatherings here in the future if this property is still available. If you are tired of being in a city and want to get away to relax go to Catherine's home. Don't waste your time paying for hotels in Antigua. You'll forget about all the things in life that you think are so important and start appreciating all the incredible nature on this Earth with the ones you love. That's what its like being at Catherine's house.

Beautifull and relaxing house

Catherine house was a very relaxing place to stay. We were lucky to be able to stay at the house before and after the delivery of my baby girl helping me and my husband to be tranquil and get prepared for the geat day, with the beautifull views of the volcanoes and the contryside, and with the special presence of the two charmy and clam dogs (Barley and Kaira) who accompanied us for long walks which helped me a lot. Catherine and her employees were always available during our stay at her house, they always were accessible for any questions that we had. I really really recommend to stay in that magical and spectacular house. I know that you will not regret it.

A luxurious villa surrounded by breathtaking countryside

This villa and its surroundings are even more beautiful and peaceful than the pictures reflect. It is large, but feels cozy (the fireplaces are perfect) and elegant, with a rustic touch. It can serve as the perfect escape from the world (I arrived solo), a romantic getaway, or family home base while traveling. It is extremely safe and private. It offers amazing views and nearby paths to walk the countryside. The best view might be from the master bath tub, which you will use often. If you are looking for a luxurious stay in the Guatemalan countryside (but not far from Antigua), this is the place. I would pay twice as much to stay here!

Paradise!

Congratulations, reader! You have just discovered one of those treasures that can transform your vacation from a "nice trip" into an unforgettable experience! My family just spent six wonderful weeks in this lovely home and every day of our stay was such a pleasure. Words can't describe the beautiful location, spectacular views and gorgeous grounds. The house is meticulously maintained by the very gracious and helpful staff and Barley, the lovable resident dog is a totally charming host. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and it is great fun to explore the local markets and then return home to cook up a Guatemalan feast and enjoy it on one of the many pretty patios! Having access to a car was a great advantage and we really enjoyed getting to know Ciudad Vieja, Antigua and other nearby villages. The owner was unfailingly helpful, providing great information and going "above and beyond" by generously arranging airport transport and assisting us in finding child care services. Book this amazing property now! You'll be treating yourself to a truly delightful adventure and, if you're like us, your first stay won't be your last one.

Absolutely Fantastic

My family stayed in this beautiful home for 2 and a half months during the summer of 2011, and all of our expectations were exceeded. The home is away from the tourist hustle and bustle of Antigua but close enough to drive in to shop and enjoy a nice meal. Our favorite part of the home was sitting out on the deck at night and watching lava explode from the Acatenanco volcano. The house is comfortable and the gardens are absolutely fantastic. Although the house is away from it all and in the middle of the Guatemalan farms, we felt safe and well cared-for by the onsite staff. We would definitely stay in Catherine's home again. Thanks for a great summer!

Lover of all things Antigua

This is a beautiful Tuscan villa style home with amazing gardens visited by lots of birds. I can still see in my mind the morning light that made it a joy to awaken. The tub with a view was my favorite thing. That said, some people would not appreciate the glass door on the bathroom (which allows the light). WiFi worked but no cable tv so if you need tv not so good. Distance from Antigua is a drawback but you can rent the owner's car very reasonably. For about 2 blocks the road to the house is lined with garbage so all but driver should close eyes. The house and grounds were spotless and the cleaning lady a joy. The owner was very helpful. The amazing views in every direction made up for any inconveniences.

Great family home away from home

The listing is accurate,as is the description of the place. Too bad it is so far from Antigua, however, it does place you within a true community, as Antigua is a bit touristy,a dnCiudad Vieja certainly is not. It alsoplaces you in an ideal location to explore nearby coffe fincas and other towns nearby. We still miss Barley-dog and think of him often. The home was certainly cozy and a wonderful retreat after a day of touring.

Wayne & Constance

My wife, Constance and I stayed at Catherines lovely home for a week in May 2011. We found it a wonderful home - spacious, comfortable, great views, quiet and a architectural pleasure. It is a two story, five level home that is of superior construction with wonderful landscaping. The setting is out in the country in the middle of a plantation. It is situated inside an enclosed compound with two other homes, and there should be no concerns for your safety or your personal items you leave in the house while touring the area. The setting is on a hilltop with views of the countryside including two volcanoes. It is a little off the beaten track, but once found gives one the opportunity to enjoy the country, but is an easy drive into Antiqua with its many restaurants and shopping. We enjoyed going to town to be typical tourists, but looked forward to getting back out to the country to enjoy the leisurely time spent there. I spent a great deal of time just walking with the dog (Barley) along the landscaped walkways aroung the house. We had our own rental car, but the option to pay a little more to use the house car is very reasonable. The house is located near the village of Ciudad Vieja, an historic town near to Antiqua. The access road to the house is a little primitive, but well worth the effort as you will see when you enter the compound and drive up the hill to the home at the top. We look forward to returning at some time in the future. We found Catherine to be kind and most informative. There is a 24 hour guard and a day gardener to give any assistance needed. You will enjoy your stay at this lovely home.

Spectacular Mountainside Villa Near Antigua

We stayed in that spectacular house several times and just the view and setting would be worth the detour. It has without a doubt the very best view and sunsets in Antigua, visible from everywhere on the property (and particularly from the master bedroom bathtub!). The garden is gorgeous and the ever-present "guardian" and his family make sure that you are attended whenever you may need it. Besides being away from the hustle-bustle of central Antigua, you have access to all the surrounding mountain paths, great for hiking or walking the dog. One of the house's bonuses is its permanent resident: Barley, an adorable, affectionate and smart German shepherd who'll make friends with you in no time.

Our Private Palace

This house is paradise. My girlfriend and I rented the house - along with the car for a month - and it was perfect. The upstairs bathtub is incredible - surrounded in glass and looking out over a volcano. The gardens are immaculate and beautiful. Plants cascade down from the terrace and with the doors open in the early evening, we could hardly draw a line where the outside ended and the inside began. The location is wonderful. You are completely safe and secure in the walled and guarded compound, and Antigua is only a 15 minute car ride away. The market there is wonderful. We spent many mornings filling out shopping bags with fresh fruits and vegetables and the afternoons cooking and relaxing at the house - listing to music, watching the sunset, and sipping wine in our private garden palace. The house is huge. We had friends come and visit from the states and, with the 3 bedrooms, we comfortably slept 6 people. If you want the peace and tranquility of the mountains but to have the urban splendor of historic Antigua at your fingertips, this beautiful house is a perfect choice for your vacation. We are already planning our return visit.

Why they chose this property

This is simply the most beautiful place I had ever visited. The Mayan people have something beautiful in their spirits to match the beauty of the place. The climate was described by the Spanish who chose this as their capital as "primavera eterna" or eternal spring. The elevation means it is never hot and neither is it ever cold. Everything grows all year round and there is a profusion of wild flowers in the surrounding countryside as well as in my garden. You have to come here to believe it.

What makes this property unique

It is the tranquility and proximity to nature that restores my soul. I do wonderful creative work in this uplifting environment.
