The little village of Sneaton is very quaint, with a traditional pub serving great home-made food, as well as Beacon Farm – an attraction with a children’s play area, seasonal events such as Christmas grottos, easter egg hunts and pumpkin picking. The best bit about Beacon farm is the freshly made ice cream, you can enjoy it here in the café. This is a great choice for a dog friendly holiday, most of the pubs in this area are dog friendly and there is an abundance of walks nearby, including one into the neighbouring village of Ruswarp which has boat & kayak hire on the river as well as a garden centre, cafes, indoor children’s play area and a miniature steam train. From Ruswarp you can then walk along the train track beside the river into Whitby, which takes around 30 minutes from Ruswarp’s train platform.
Whitby has so much to offer all year round and is a very popular place to visit with its many festivals and events, such as the Folk Festival, the Whitby Regatta and the bi-annual Goth Weekend. There is a large selection of pubs offering live music, good food or a quiet drink, quaint antique and gift shops, and famous fish and chip shops nestled amongst the cobbled back streets and main shopping areas. The local tour bus is an excellent way of visiting some of Whitby’s highlights, including the stunning abbey and St Mary’s Church, positioned on the cliff top where you can enjoy spectacular views over Whitby and out to sea.
There are many pretty resorts dotted along the coast, including Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay, which are great for exploring our maritime history, including Captain James Cook, smugglers and pirates. There are water sports, surf schools and even whale watching trips to be found along the coast. The North York Moors National Park and surrounding area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and many walks can be accessed from your doorstep, including the Cleveland Way, a riverside walk along the River Esk and a lovely coastal walk along the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough, via Robin Hood’s Bay.
Travel by steam train into the heart of ’Heartbeat’ country or take a fishing trip out to sea on one of the many boat trips that leave the harbour. Falling Foss Waterfall, Roseberry Topping and Dalby Forest are just some of the natural beauty attractions in the area. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is just along the coast with its open-air theatre as well as two large bays of contrasting styles. Beach 3 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
