About this property

Family Ranch with Guest Cabin

Our small family ranch is located on Embargo Creek, halfway between Del Norte and South Fork, about 3 miles north of Highway 160. We invite you and your family to come stay with us in our guest cabin.

Our way of life is not fancy. We live off-grid with all of our electricity being provided by the sun which powers a solar array and battery bank. While this will provide for your minimum electricity needs, power conservation will be part of your stay with us.

Are you longing for a break from connectivity? Come enjoy the quiet as there is no TV, no Internet, and most cell phones don't work. Sound crazy? You may find it is just the get away you need in this fast paced world. Read a book, take a walk, gaze at the star filled sky as you lie in the hammock, play a board game, reconnect with each other. In this day, you can go anywhere to find WiFi and 4G and hundreds of TV channels. Our guest cabin offers a taste of a different way. It’s sort of like camping, but you get to sleep in a bed.

Upstairs you will find one bedroom with a queen bed, and a second bedroom with twin bunk beds and a "star" bunk (with a view out the window). A third bedroom is located on the main level and provides a full bed. The cabin has a full bathroom on the main level and a half bathroom upstairs. A large, bright, fully equipped kitchen opens to the living room and dining area. A wood stove is the source of heat for the cabin.

Embargo Creek runs through our ranch before joining the nearby Rio Grande River to the south. Our ranch includes a few friendly animals like horses, sheep, chickens, and our Newfoundland dogs. Our home cabin is a short walk from the guest cabin. In between the two cabins you’ll find the barn, the garden, the Homestead Cabin, greenhouse, and chicken coop. The workshop is nearby also. We have a pasture for our horses and second pasture for grazing. The river runs through both pastures providing the animals with water. During your stay with us, you can usually find us working around the ranch on various projects. If you have any questions, just mosey on over for a chat.

If you are interested in experiencing a step back in time, check out our 100 year old Homestead Cabin that we have restored. We have built the Homestead Cabin for the purpose of providing early American activities for guests to enjoy. Learn to cook on a wood stove, hand pump water, make butter and ice cream by hand, do laundry with a washtub and wringer, sew on a treadle sewing machine, learn to spin wool from our sheep. We are happy to arrange a fun filled day of activities for you and your family. Some activities require a bit of preparation time depending on what supplies are needed and how many people will be participating. When you arrive you are invited to look over the booklet of activities that we provide and let us know if there is something that interests you. Whether you are 6 or 60 you may find you really enjoy gettin’ back to the good ol’ ways.

The area attractions are plentiful and offer a wide variety to choose from; there is something for everyone. From our ranch, the County Road takes you into the Rio Grande National Forest just a few miles north. Hiking, mountain biking, climbing, rafting, fishing, and hunting are all nearby. The Great Sand Dunes are about an hour drive from here. The historic mining town of Creede is also a beautiful drive. The San Luis Valley is rich in history and the old west culture continues to thrive. The Rio Grande Railroad offers train rides into the mountains. Seasonal events include rodeos, car shows, art shows, music festivals, logger days, farmer’s markets, and much more. If you enjoy skiing, Wolf Creek is just 30 minutes away and records the greatest average annual snowfall in Colorado. Snowmobiling is also a popular local sport with miles and miles of beautiful trails. With so much to choose from, you’ll want to come back year after year!

Wonderful Family Vacation

Our family of 5 had a wonderful time staying here while skiing at Wolf Creek. The cabin was very clean and cozy and my teens enjoyed exploring the pioneer cabin on the property and all of the animals! The drive to Wolf Creek Ski area was about 35 minutes and beautiful. Would stay here again!

Loved!

Our stay was beautiful and calm. The property was unique. The host, Lisa, was so welcoming and let my 2 year old daughter accompany her during animal feedings. She was in heaven! I’d definitely return.

A Magical Place

This was our third stay with Tim and Lisa. When I asked my son how he was going to describe the ranch to his friends he said the only way to describe it was as a magical happy fun place...and oh yeah mom, the skiing(Wolf Creek) was epic too. Every time we leave, we know we will be back again. Always leave with a sense of peace and calmness. Lisa and Tim have the best animals and stories; and love sharing their knowledge with guests. If you're worried about the cell/internet situation...it is extremely limited, but we don't miss it for a week. The wood burning stove keeps you MORE than warm enough. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could need and the handmade soap in the bathrooms is a nice bonus. Truly gracious hosts!! Can't wait to see y'all next year(if not before!!)

complete decompress and reset

This place is amazing. Lisa and Tim are even more amazing! The pictures on the website are absolutely an accurate representation of the property, but do not do it justice. This was our second time to stay here and it felt like we were coming home as we pulled through the gate. If you want to step away from this crazy world for a minute and take a deep breath to reset...this is your place. We originally stayed here because it was convenient to Wolf Creek. The kids couldn't wait to ski in the morning and then they couldn't get home fast enough to help Ms Lisa take care of all their "friends" (animals). The hosts of this property are more than gracious. We will be back for many many years to come. It's clear they have a love for the property and just want others to experience the beauty and peace of this place.

Frontier Fun

My two young kids and I loved our time on the farm! It was the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. The house itself was beautiful and clean and well-stocked with everything you need for comfort and fun. I loved how the reliance on off-the-grid solar power brought awareness to our energy usage and the opportunity to disconnect. My kids absolutely LOVED playing dress-up with all of the many cowboy costumes and cosplaying "wild west" with toy guns and real lassos. They loved the animals and are still talking about Princess Buttercup and wondering what her baby looks like. Lisa is an absolute treasure and the kids really enjoyed helping her gather eggs and feed the animals. We also brought our dog with us and she loved splashing in the creek on the property. Thank you so much to Lisa and Tim for their hospitality.

Perfect hunting cabin

We stayed at this cabin because it was 5 min from where we hunt. It was a perfect way to come back from hunting every morning and night. The fireplace will damn near cook you out of there if you let it. Will definitely be staying there again not just for hunting. With no wifi or t.v. , it made my 13 year old son interact with grandpa and dad much more. Thanks again tim and Lisa The Hughes family

Wonderful 'Back in Time' Ranch

Tim and Lisa have a wonderful property 'off-the-grid' but close to town and its amenities. The solar power enable use of the lights and the fridge. The propane provided hot water and stove for cooking. The fire pit provided a great place to commune after a hard day of hiking and fishing. If you absolutely need a cell phone signal, 4G is available via a 5 min drive to the south. One of the three of us had two-bars to be able to text. The ranch grounds were a heavenly slice of nostalgia with a hint of 'Little House on the Prairie.'

Off the grid

We had a wonderful time staying at Lisa and Tims place off the grid. It was a great change of pace and really allowed us to “unplug” from the craziness of life. We skied 3 days during a great snow storm of the year. The Homestead Ranch is breathtaking and so accommodating.

Wonderful, quiet, cozy cabin

Lisa and Tim's cabin was a wonderful place to spend a week skiing at Wolf Creek Pass with our entire family. Being "off-grid" was refreshing and the cabin was plenty warm and cozy with the great wood-burning stove. Tim and Lisa are tremendous hosts and were very kind and helpful in assisting us with our flat tire on our last day at the ranch! We highly recommend this great spot if you want quiet, beauty, greater simplicity and great hosts. We also recommend hiking up to the mesa just behind the property!

The Cabin

Electric is powered by solar power so is not as plentiful as normal. Lights and refrigerator running for continuous hours can zap the power.

Great off the grid place to stay!

We selected this place to ‘get away from it all’ for a week. We were very impressed with the ranch property and everything there was to see and do there as well as nearby. We especially liked that we could have our dogs there with us (they even have a fenced in area on the back of the cabin for the dogs to use!) We never met Tim but Lisa came over to greet us when we arrived and checked in with us again a couple of days later. She was super friendly, understanding and accommodating. We would highly recommend staying here especially if you have kids and/or dogs!

Beautiful countryside getaway

Our 7-night stay in this cabin was a great treat to the whole family. The cabin is simple, clean and simply adorable. Lisa and Tim, the ranch owners, are extremely friendly and helpful. Our four children, age 5-11, loved helping out with the farm animals, playing with the barn cats and doing some traditional crafts. The area, with the San Luis Valley and the Rio Grande National Forest, offers a beautiful landscape for hiking and excursions. For rainy days, the house is packed with adventure books and games. We loved our calm relaxing vacation here and would recommend this rental to anyone seeking a peaceful place in a beautiful landscape.

Yet Again!!!

Last year on our first visit, kids already plan to go back the next year, because they love feeding animals, cooking pie and make ice cream and etc without thinking of electronics. as our tradition to always go to Creede every year, kids want to go back to this amazing ranch with an awesome couple in Del Norte. Tim added a new bed call "Star Bunk" (means you can view star by the window) kids swap to sleep there. He said more changes to come :)

A Perfect Hideaway

Words cannot do this incredible place justice. We were looking for a “back to basics” place off the beaten track, off the grid, secluded and private. We got all of it and so much more. The cabin was gorgeous and very comfortable, with plenty of books and games that our daughter thoroughly enjoyed. The animals on the ranch were a constant source of pure joy and fascination and our daughter really loved taking part in feeding them each morning and evening. With the perfect location we were able to enjoy many of the wonderful sites, places to visit and experience. We could very easily have stayed another week we loved it so much. Thank you for sharing your piece of heaven with us, and for letting Jemma participate in your daily life on your beautiful ranch, she had such an incredible experience. The fire by the creek side on our last night was a big highlight! Tim and Lisa, your hospitality was incredible and we really enjoyed getting to know you. We arrived as guests but left as friends. Thank you again.

It was a rustic getaway!

The property was as described. Lots of animals for the kids to help care for. It was rustic and homey. Had a great time walking with our family around the property and up the mountain. The cabin was nice and cozy, plenty warm in the coldest weather. Take boots, it does get muddy when it rains! It was a joy to stay with Tim and Lisa!

The best, most memorable, exceeding all expectations experience.

Lisa and Tim and unexplainablily exceptional host. We enjoyed EVERY second of our stay. There is so much to do in the area but if you want to just stay put and relax they have so many exciting historical activities to keep you relaxed yet busy. We made handmade pillows and homemade apple pie (the best pie ever!) My kids had NO electronics the whole week we were there and they never even asked for it which is HUGE lol. We went on a hike which was BEAUTIFUL! My kids got up early every morning to help Lisa feed the animals and played all day long! Words can not express how incredible this trip was and how thankful we stayed there and made such amazing memories to last a life time. We can’t wait to go back again.

Awesome for kids and young families

Cute cabin with nice folks! Amazing area close to Del Norte and South Fork. Lisa has tons of farm activities for kids and families that can be added to your stay for a few $. My kids wanted to make a pie but we ran out of time. Dress up clothes in the bunk room is such a cute touch. All the animals are such a treat! Maybe not the best if you have dogs unless you like to keep them on a leash the entire time. No yard or area for dogs is available. Curtains to block out light in the upstairs bedrooms would be a plus otherwise you’re getting up at first light!

Awesome and quiet hideaway!

Upon arriving at this amazing place, you will be surrounded by views of mountains and valleys. The owners live on the 40 plus acres and made us feel right at home when we arrived. They gave us a quick rundown of what to expect and left us to settle in and do as we pleased. If you are looking for a place to unwind and get away from the busy city life or even just experience a semi-off the grid getaway, this is the place for you.
