About this property

Country Hideaways | The Hay Loft | Ripon

On the fringes of this ancient but compact city is a small hamlet absorbed into the city suburbs with adjacent meadows and woodland reaching out to the River Laver. The immediate area has been recognised as a Conservation Area since 1994 and forms an exceptional architectural enclave in character and form. Tucked quietly behind Bishopton Cottage is The Hay Loft, a modern but cosy conversion of an original barn dating back to 1635. A striking little cottage cloaked with privacy but so near to the City, the wonderful Dales and Vales and only a scenic walk away from the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey. Travel a little further afield to Harrogate, the Himalyan Gardens, RHS Harlow Carr, Masham, Thirsk.

Access to the cottage is along a private road to a small courtyard with ample space for parking. Entry is from the courtyard to a compact kitchen with laminate floor, sparkling Victorian tiles and everything needed to prepare that special meal for two. The kitchen is open to the adjacent lounge with flagged hearth, wood-burning stove and intimate dining area. French windows open from the lounge to a private walled patio which is the perfect place to enjoy the late morning and afternoon sunshine. A stairway rises from the corner of the lounge to a king-size bedroom and en-suite shower room with washbasin and toilet. Both the bedroom and shower room rise to the rafters and have skylights though the bedroom also has an occluded window.

The joy of the cottage is in the detail, an ideal place for two, intimate, thoughtfully designed and completed with loving care. An historical building but very modern in its conception including energy efficiency and the must-have features of modern life.

This was our second visit - very well received - the house is ideally located and perfect for a couple. Pete and Katharine were very pleasant hosts. We certainly wouldn't hesitate to return.

Very comfortable
Thank you to the hosts of the Hay Loft. Our stay once again was made easy by having such nice kind hosts. The area in which the Hay Loft is situated is quiet & peaceful yet not far from the Ripon market town. Thank you. Christopher.

A midweek winter break in a little gem
What a delight! We felt so lucky to get a short notice seasonal reduction for a part week in November. The friendly welcome was as warm as the heating and fire in this charming little cottage ideal for two. With frosty starts and sunny days the situation in an appealing historic lane on the very edge of Ripon made walking 1 mile into the city for the cathedral, the canal walk or one of the many Italian restaurants in the evening a pleasure. The highlight was to be able to walk out of town, through Studley Royal Deer Park and into Fountains abbey ....about a 5 mile circle then back to the cosy comfort of the Hayloft. It is an attractive and thoughtful conversion with the advantage of private parking and helpful owners next door.

Great place to stay!
The property was very much as described and met all our expectations. The positive reviews we had read were clearly accurate. Well equipped, well located and the owners were super friendly and helpful. The welcome treats were also very much appreciated. I'd book again without hesitation.

Lovely cosy place to stay in peaceful village,10 mins walk from town centre
We had a wonderful week staying at the Hay Loft. The apartment is incredibly well equipped, with everything you could need and is situated in Historic Bishopton, just a 10 mins walk from Ripon town centre. It's very cosy, with central heating throughout and a great log burner. Also has a superb bathroom. The place is nicely tucked away in a very beautiful section of Bishopton, which makes it extremely quiet. You get your own parking area, just outside the Hay Loft front door. We got a great welcome pack of cakes, chocolate, milk and a nice elderflower sparling drink, after the owners found out we didn't drink. This is a great place to stay, with really lovely hosts. Would highly recommend.

Hidden gem
Tucked away in its own private space, it’s a beautiful cottage that is well equipped. Katherine is very friendly and easy to contact if needed. The welcome pack was a lovely touch with homemade cakes that were absolutely delicious. The location is excellent, an easy walk into ripon and easily accessible to fountains abbey Would definitely recommend

Perfect first visit to Ripon
The Hay Loft was a lovely place to stay in Ripon. We were most comfortable, and everything we could need was provided. The owners had left lovely items to start us off, and offered advice when needed. The weather was not perfect, but we enjoyed local walks, and visits to Ripon Cathedral and Fountains Abbey. We hope to return before too long.

Excellent holiday
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hayloft, it is really well situated with easy access to Ripon and then the wider Yorkshire area with lots of lovely walks/attractions within easy reach. Katharine the host was lovely and the recommendations in the visitors book were excellent. We would definitely recommend the Hayloft for relaxed getaways and would definitely return

A cosy, very comfortable and conveniently located base to explore the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Extremely hospitable owners available if you need them. Lovely welcome gifts, flowers and log supply (which was appreciated greatly as it snowed..a lot… during my stay!) Thank you, I would have no hesitation in booking again. Andrew
