Architectural creativity, imaginative design and numerous stylish, decorative touches infuse this wonderfully restored village house with a timeless, elegant air. The unique, near mirror image layout of the accommodation will have broad appeal, particularly for two couples or perhaps a cross-generational party who can all holiday together whilst at the same time enjoy individual space and privacy.
Set into wooded hillside with lovely views across the Armeni Valley (and even a side view to the sea) this impressive home, flowing effortlessly over two floors, overlooks a strikingly attractive pool terrace nestled on the lower level of the tiered grounds. Having studied and worked in Italy, Germany and the USA, Dimitri, the charming architect owner, has imbued the house with ideas and influences from each country, some subtle others more obvious, all showcasing his keen eye for detail and style.
Inside, the property is best described as being in two halves, each self-contained and independent yet seamlessly interconnected as needed via a shared doorway. From each living area a staircase leads to an upper floor double bedroom each with an en suite shower room. To the rear of one living area an additional double bed, sitting on a raised dais and with a shower room conveniently adjacent, adds a further dimension to the sleeping options.
Both living areas have direct access onto the principal terrace where there is a dining area for al fresco meals and a shady alcove in which to retreat with a good book. Others may prefer to take a chilled drink to the first-floor terrace and gaze out across the lovely rural vista (look out for the wild eagles who regularly soar on the thermal currents).
Comfortably furnished, well-appointed and with a tangible focus on quality The Architect’s House is both functional and fashionable, practical yet full of warmth and character. Features such as sweeping arches, exposed stone and wooden beams are complemented by eye-catching decorative flourishes such as the hand-blown glass inserts of the shower room doors, reminiscent of the Murano glass Dimitri encountered during his time in Italy.
The closest locally run taverna is just 250m away and opens during the week for drinks and snacks and for food at weekends. Within the hamlet of Maheri there are two local kafenions (400m) offering simple drinks and snacks, Neo Chorio (2.5km) has essential amenities in the form of a minimarket, bakery and a traditional grill restaurant (takeaway available), with further eateries and provision shops just 4km away in Armeni. A 10-15 minute drive takes you to the coast where Kalives (7km) and Almyrida (10km) have two lovely sandy beaches - each! Criss-crossed by walking trails the surrounding area of Apokoronous is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers, while Chania (27km) and even the Samaria Gorge (62km) make great destinations for a day trip.
As the upper floor terrace has a low wall part-topped with trellis young children would need supervision. Due to the wooded environs barbecues are not permitted.
Please note: The Greek Government charge a Climate Tax which is payable by guests staying in hotels and other properties. For The Architect's House the charge is a flat rate of €15 (£13.04) per night. For your convenience we will add this amount to your booking, rather than you having to pay it in resort.
