About this property

Beautiful gite in charming location with private pool near historic market towns

Behind private gates, overlooking a mature lawn and trees, our beautiful stone cottage awaits you. Floor to ceiling windows light up a stunning open plan living space with generous sofas, log-burner and smart tv with super-fast broadband. Behind you a fully-fitted kitchen gives you all you need for family meals around a beautiful oak table - unless you prefer the veranda with its pretty vines and shady space. Walk out of the other living room door and you find yourself by a stunning courtyard pool, with comfortable loungers and poolside shower. The pool gets the sun all day, and as the sun moves around, also ensures there are shady spaces for those who prefer to keep cool. Upstairs, a master bedroom with double bed and ample storage ensures comfortable nights and next door a second bedroom with sleeping arrangements for four will fit more friends and family. A modern bathroom and shower with sink, good mirror and lighting completes the upstairs area.

The house works equally well for couples seeking a romantic break and families with children of all ages. (We have a cot and high chair as you need and the courtyard pool can be closed off with the living room door.)

Ébéon is a peaceful hamlet perfect for anyone who is looking to switch off and unwind. Surrounded by fields of sunflowers and pineau vines growing the area's famous aperitif Pineau des Charentes and Cognac digestif, we are also only 40 minutes from the Atlantic beaches - the 'wild coast', where surfers mix with sunbathers. The area - Charente-Maritime - is a French department of Nouvelle Aquitaine region positioned on the west coast of France and is named after the Charente River, where you can rent canoes and visit historic towns like Saintes and pretty villages like Saint Savinien, where artists and artisans show their work. The region has the highest number of annual sunshine hours in France apart from the Côte d’Azure - but it’s a lot closer! - and enjoys mild winters, lots of early spring sunshine and many hot sunny days that last in the autumn.

Our local town of Saint Jean d'Angely has a fab selection of places to eat, from family friendly pizzerias to excellent bistros and restaurants. It also has a wonderful, bustling Saturday market in the covered market hall in the centre of town that has stood for hundreds of years. The world famous town of Cognac - home to the celebrated brandy - is 25 minutes away. And 50 minutes away is La Rochelle - ancient port and maritime city with beautiful architecture, cobbled streets, parks and museums and aquarium. Just a bit further - an hour or so from our house - is the tiny island of Île de Ré with its miles of glorious, pine-tree fringed sandy beaches, green-shuttered pretty villages, whitewashed houses, artisan shops and seafood restaurants. But you can find an array of lovely Atlantic beaches much closer and enjoy exploring the seaside spa towns that line the nearby coast.

We live in a house in the grounds during the summer months, and are on hand to help with anything you need - but we also keep ourselves to ourselves to ensure that you have the peace and privacy that you need.

Holiday in Charente

The gite was in a lovely, peaceful, idyllic place and perfect for relaxing. We couldn’t stop looking at the view from the gite into the garden! The gite was very comfortable and relaxing with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The pool was a great addition as well. Although quite remote, you can easily get into larger towns in 15 mins for restaurants and supermarkets etc and it’s close to many tourist destinations.

Peaceful, chill out, haven.

Lovely gite with all you could wish for, for a peaceful, chill out escape. Excellent facilities and living space and a great pool for those holiday laps & lilo drifting. Nicely equipped kitchen too. Hosts, Chris & Sophie, were able to help with any questions via text super efficiently :) Would definitely recommend. Oh! And if you like dark skies and looking up at the stars, this place is unbelievable! Living in London you forget how artificially bright our part of the world is! J&J x

Beautiful house in a tranquil location

This was a beautiful house to stay in for a very tranquil week. It has been renovated to a very high standard (we loved the main bedroom overlooking the living room, as well as the gorgeous, light, airy, spacious living room/kitchen/diner). The pool was perfect for a dip at the end of a day's exploring. The area is lovely - very quiet in the immediate vicinity of the gite, but loads of interesting places within an easy drive. We enjoyed exploring St Jean d'Angely nearby, as well as Saintes, Cognac and Niort. We also had a lovely day on the Ile de Re and another on the Ile d'Oleron. Chris and Sophie are lovely - great communication before our stay and really helpful during our stay too. We would highly recommend their lovely house.

Wonderful stay with family

This Gite has provided us with a wonderful holiday we will remember forever. The location is quiet and tranquil and yet within easy reach of the local markets and some of the great sites of this area. The accommodation is full of character and just what we were after. Everything you need is on hand in the fully equipped kitchen, there was great wifi for the occasional work check-in and a new Samsung Smart TV for the odd night when we caught up with some Netflix. Our hosts, Chris and Sophie provided us with plenty of great advice about the gite and the local amenities. Travelling with Ryanair, it was great to have all our towels and bedding provided, as well as a washing machine to keep on top of things. The pool is clean, private and enclosed by a lovely old wall that must have been part of the building at some time in its previous existence, it provides a wonderful suntrap, but also has corners to escape the sun and just relax with a book. The garden views from both the gite and pool are extensive and full of trees and dappled sun. We enjoyed great trips to Ile de Re, Cognac, Angouleme and Saint Savinen, all of which are well worth the visit and within easy reach. A meal out is Saint Jean D'Angley is well worth it for a relaxing time and authentic French cuisine. The grassed area directly outside the gite provided a warm pretty spot for our evening meals surrounded by grapevines and flowers. We enjoyed several nights of Scrabble and cards. We will certainly come again!

Beautiful house in a lovely quiet setting

We loved our stay. The house is comfortable and cosy has everything you need. The pool is perfect and completely private. And it's in a lovely quiet rural location. If you want to go out and about it's only a short drive to St Jean D'Angely - a beautiful ancient market town - and only about an hour to wonderful beaches. Lovely local walks too. Thanks Sophie and Chris!

We are Chris and Sophie. We’ve lived, worked and holidayed across France for thirty years and have settled here because it’s so lovely. Peaceful, warm, close to the coast but also a beautiful rural area with a friendly vibe where you can totally switch off. We've got four grown-up children, so we understand what families need in order to have a good holiday. We've fallen in love with Charente-Maritime and hope you do too!

Why they chose this property

It's very special here. The building is beautifully restored and private, with a pool that will make you gasp to see it and peaceful, spacious living quarters in which you can properly relax. The hamlet is pretty, welcoming and un-touristy - this is real France! - with lots of walks and single-track roads perfect for family cycle-rides around the fields. You are also very close to local villages and towns that are steeped in history, with lovely local food and produce, summer festivals and pop-up restaurants. When you want a change from the countryside, a day at the beach is an easy decision, with golden sands, spa towns, ancient harbours and ports and the trendy resorts of the Ile de Ré to explore.
