About this property

Pet-friendly stone farmhouse on the Sheep's Head

LAHARANDOTA - The Artists' Cottage, an old stone farmhouse previously owned by American painter Frank Russell, fully renovated in 2008 to include slate floors, old beams and stone walls. Set in over an acre of land and surrounded by fields with extensive views over Dunmanus Bay and the Mizen Head. Ideal for those looking for a relaxing holiday or weekend retreat, for walkers/cyclists or families, with its large garden, spring, pond and small outdoor pool (solar heated). Located 4 miles west of the local village Kilcrohane, and a scenic half-hour drive from the busy market town of Bantry with its great restaurants and pubs. Stroll down the lane from the cottage directly onto The Sheep's Head Way, one of Ireland's 31 Waymarked Ways (marked trails). The peninsula's natural wild beauty makes its 55-mile trail stand out from others and offers an exciting challenge for all keen walkers. If, however, you're not a 'wild rover', there's always riding, sailing, kayaking, diving, golf...

FEATURED IN ALASTAIR SAWDAY'S IRELAND GUIDE: Review: 'Now how many Irish cottages come with an outdoor pool? Next to the road but shielded by hedges, it even has sea views! You are at the tip of the strikingly beautiful Sheep’s Head peninsula, a paradise for walkers. Laharandota was the house of an artist for many years; it still shows. Everything inside is in the best possible taste and breathes a generous spirit: a wonderful kitchen with big Rayburn stove, art, objets and a fabulous hamper, a claw-foot bath, a glasswalled sun room, nooks, crannies and a rustic fireplace that roars in winter. Next-door’s studio, often rented to the same party, provides comforts on a reduced scale, but the light, the art, the sea views are the same. Hike a part of the Sheep’s Head Way: ‘the best walk in Ireland’ says Country Walking magazine. Head for the lighthouse, look out for choughs and peregrines. Shops and restaurants are a short drive away, lovely Bantry Town and sandy Barleycove beach are not much further. Inspirational'.

Guest Comments: 'It is a fabulous place to stay - we found ourselves spending lots of time just pottering around the cottage because it was so lovely. We will definitely come again and will recommend it to our friends.'

'Thank you so much for the weekend. I must say your cottage is spectacular - you have a real eye for interiors and the quality of the renovation and furnishings is stunning. We had 3 days of great weather, the kids were even swimming in the sea. They didn't want to leave and now want to live there!'

'Thank you for a wonderful 3 days in your beautiful cottage. It was everything we had dreamed of and more. We absolutely fell in love with The Artists' Cottage and the surrounding area.'
Jayne & Gordon, Rockingham, Australia

'We had a fabulous time. The setting was wonderful and the cottage was just gorgeous. Daniel loved his cute little bedroom. He was even brave enough to swim in the pool!'
Pamela & Roger, Glasgow

'Thank you for providing such a welcoming, comfortable taste of rustic charm for we city-dwellers. We all loved everything about the cottage. Of course the swimming pool is the icing on the cake - luckily the weather was glorious so we chilled out and lazed by the pool or braved its invigorating freshness!'
John & Susan, Edinburgh

'Just a note to say how much we enjoyed the cottage. It is in a beautiful and unspoilt location and the views across the bay are something to remember. The quality of the finish and furnishing in The Artists' Cottage are incredible, really beautiful. We had some really lovely times there and we will remember it with great affection.'

Magic Ireland
The Artist Cottage is magic! The owner has done an amazing job renovating and decorating old farm buildings. At every turn there is something fascinating to enjoy, whether paintings, old ceramics or garden nooks. The accommodations are very comfortable (I’d like my own set of sheets to take home, please!) but limiting the house accessories a bit would make it easier to find my phone when I set it down! In any case, we look forward to returning for another stay.

A wonderfully charming and comfortable cottage in the most beautiful setting
We visited for four days with three adults, one child, and two small dogs and had plenty of room. We had everything we could need and Julie provided us with plenty of information for things to do in the area. We had the benefit of wonderful weather for our whole stay, so we took advantage of the pool and the bikes. There was so much to do and explore and I'd love to return!

Perfect Irish Cottage
We rented the cottage as part of our honeymoon to Ireland and absolutely loved the place. It was cozy and comfortable! And Julie was great. She gave us detailed directions, suggestions for places to eat, detailed house instructions and even checked on us after our arrival to make sure we had everything we needed. I would definitely come back!

5 Star Accommodation, in a stunning location
Our family holiday in West Cork was very much enhanced by staying at The Artist's Cottage. Julie has thought of every last detail. The quality of the furnishings and bedlinen etc... are 5 star standard. We enjoyed the holiday so much that we booked it the following week for next year. We are a family of 6, the oldest is 9 year old and the youngest is 9 months. If you enjoy plenty of outdoor activities, good food and high standards of accommodation then we recommend The Artist's Cottage.

Sheepshead Paradise
We had seen this cottage 2 years ago on our second trip to the Sheepshead peninsula, and thought that it would be a great place to stay next time we came to West Cork. We were not disappointed- the description listing was totally accurate- but could not truly convey the attention to detail that Julie has created. We were looking for time and space to relax after a hectic 2010, and we certainly were able to re-charge our personal batteries in the Artists Cottage. The cottage has every possible facility- and we particulary enjoyed the snugness of the Rayburn- and the joy of the open log fire. Cooking on the Rayburn was easy- and took me back to my childhood- and we were able to cook fresh fish bought on our way through from Cork- via Kinsale- at Union Hall ( near Castle Townshend- with the great seafood restaurant in Mary Ann's pub) Julie's meticulous attention to detail has created a real feeling of being so comfortable in way that is hard to describe- just like being in the home you would have loved to have created for yourselves. We spent time walking a number of loops of the Sheepshead path- and taking on a few Guinesses and tots of Jameson with Eileen in Fitzpatricks in Kilcrohane village. It was then great to soak in the slipper bath overlooking the sea- fantastic! If you come here- do take the back road to Bantry and take day to slow drive around the Beara- Allihies and Eyries are a must! We really did not want to leave- and will always treasure memories of a perfect 7 days in the most peaceful and beautiful part of Ireland. We would recommend this cottage to any discerning family- we want to come back with our grandchildren and extended family in the summer- when we can make use of that fabulous pool. 3 days not enough!
We went for a long weekend and discovered that 3 nights is not enough! We enjoyed our hike to the Sheepshead lighthouse and trips to Schull and Barleycove, but the the cottage itself could be the main attraction. Don't forget to leave time to relax in this adorable cottage and its lovely garden.

A beautiful retreat in the southwest of Ireland
Although our stay at “Laharandota” is already over more than two months, the thought of the wonderful cottage still warms our hearts and makes us feel "homesick”. After a long journey from Dublin we immediately fell in love with the unique landscape of Sheep`s Head Peninsula with its green countryside, lopsided telegraph poles and small stone walls. However, not only the picturesque surroundings made us feel welcome: We felt very comfortable straight away when we came into the house, where a basket full of delicious regional products and beautiful flowerpots were already waiting for us. We discovered room by room and were amazed at the natural, tasteful and comfortable furnishing. The week we spent at Laharandota definitely was over too fast. There are lots of things worth being discovered and visited: of course, the house itself, but also a walking tour to Sheep`s Head Peninsula, a visit of Bantry Market, a round trip at the Ring of Kerry with an excursion to Molly Gallivan`s Traditional Farm (Bonane, Kenmare), a stroll through Glengariff and a drive on Dursey Island Cable Car can highly be recommended. We can`t imagine a better place to spend holidays and would love to come back one day.

Perfect - and then some!
have just returned from this amazing property and wish I was back there again. Both the cottage and the studio are breathtakingly well-equipped with every utensil you could ever need. We arrived in the dark and awoke to the most incredible view we had ever seen. Both houses are spotlessly clean and very comfortable. I am almost tempted not to recommend this property on the basis that I want to make sure that there is availablility for next year! It is also a very friendly place and the drive to Bantry over the Goat's Path is something I will never forget. I just want to move in and never leave this gorgeous, perfect place.

Enchanted
Laharandota is a perfect getaway. It does not only take you to another place, but if you let it, to another time, one in which the world turns just a little slower and in which every detail has been paid attention to. Turn on the retro radio, sit in the cozy armchair with the fireplace to your left and the fluffy blanket on your knees, enjoy the views from the winter garden (tip: if you bring the LaFuma recliner chairs inside, you will never want to sit anywhere else, independent of the weather) or take a bath in a Kate Winslet like style (watch "The Holiday" and you know what I'm talking about - by the way, this is a movie that would be the perfect addition to the exclusive movie collection you can find in the cottage, so somone leave it there! O.k. it is NOT playing in Ireland, but that's a detail.). But, anything you do gives you the feeling of being in the home you ever wished for (it did that to us, at least). Well all right, the sea you can see when you wake up (unless on a cloudy but mysteriously looking day that is) does its bit, but the house is just wonderful. When you stand in front of the Rayburn oven (and haven't seen one before) you might find yourself being a little awestruck. But, trust the description and it will become your best friend. You will find yourself baking an apple pie, whip the cream with a fork (there is stirring gear, so you can use that as well), baking again, this time a quiche... You need to give it a little time, but it is a great tool that also heats up the whole cottage. Well, this review could go on and on... But it would only make us want to go back just now. So to summarise - if you're after quality, a little luxury and plenty of peace, you will find it there. If you're looking for a house with a soul, you will fall in love with it. We certainly will go back. And we hope, that people who go there treat is as if it was their own home, because when we go back, we'd like to find it as perfect as it was.

You won't want to leave.
I spent a fantastic few days staying in the cottage with a few friends and from booking to departure the whole experience was smooth and relaxing. All the information you could need is clearly provided for you in advance and when you do make it to Laharandota you'll find a home from home, beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and demanding to be explored. The cottage is a fair drive along the Sheep's Head Peninsula but the drive is worth it to enjoy the views either from the master bedroom when you wake, the conservatory when having a read or the pool when taking a dip. If your fairly fit the lighthouse at the end of the Peninsula is a spectacular walk and a must to take some great pictures. We'd all love to come back to Laharandota and have no hesitation recommending it to others. Get it booked!

A wonderful cottage in a wonderful place
We were captivated by the cottage from the moment we arrived. Just being in it was a treat, and on those windy rainy October days when we stayed in, it was lovely just to sit by the log fire, relaxing with a book and watching the weather roll by. To say the cottage was well equipped is an under-statement. Everything we needed was there, and more. And it was so comfortable and homely. Better than my home, actually!! On sunny days, it was a short walk to the sea shore, and we really appreciated the bikes in the garage for popping down the lane to the local village, just 3 miles away. On a sunny day, the natural beauty of the area is simply stunning.

chilling out
We spent 8 memorable days, basking in the glories of the Irish autumn (sunshine, a little rain and mist, varied hues of green, brown, purple and blue), and relaxing at the superbly equipped Laharandota cottage. Arrived in glorious sunshine, and dived into the welcoming blue pool, along with those in my family equally devoid of common sense. We had a bracing dip every day of our stay. The cottage itself had a useful welcome package, and was amply stocked with logs and kindling. So like the pool, the open fire was a daily ritual. There was plenty to do, with segments of the Sheeps Head Way in close proximity. Manageable 1 to 3 hour walks were the order of the day. The signal tower walk and lighthouse walks were probably the most rewarding. The highest point on the peninsula (Seefin) is also a fairly easy 1 hour walk from the mountain pass viewpoint carpark. There a couple of adult bikes in the shed (long legs required), and cycling round the area is fun also, especially if you don't mind getting a little mucky. On a slightly negative note the nearest pub is 2 to 3 miles away, and could be a long enough stagger home. There is a decent enough shop in the post office of the nearest village Kilcrohane, and a supermarket In Durrus (45 mins away ) for your provisions. Eating out again probably best around Durrus and Bantry. My favourite was O'Connor's seafood restaurant in Bantry for scallops, mussels, lobster etc. We'd definitely come back again, in summer or spring, and if it was a little warmer, probably lounge poolside quite a bit. The kids had a ball, each had their own bedroom, and all really enjoyed it. Even if it rains, there's things to do outdoors. I mentioned cycling, but here's also a quad biking centre near Skibbereen (see the west Cork for kids booklet in the cottage), not for the health and safety conscious, but fantastic fun in the mud. All in all, the artist's cottage is a really good spot. Thanks Julie!
