About this property

Old Stone Cottage - historical cottage with woodburner, great trails

Built in the 1860’s, The cottage is a cosy traditional Irish cottage on the edge of the National Trust property Rowallane Gardens.

This extra special cottage is nestled into the hillside of an ancient fort in the charming village of Saintfield of County Down. Recently lovingly restored, much care and attention was made to maintain its unique character and features and a stay here is truly an escape into Irish history.

The cottage is part of a private estate.
The space
The cottage is the style of a typical traditional old Irish stone cottage and was built in 1860. The walls of the cottage are very thick and the original cottage consisted of a living room/kitchen with a large fire inglenook area where food would have been prepared, a separate bedroom and a sleeping loft upstairs. It was extended in the 1980’s to add another bedroom and an indoor bathroom. It then fell into disrepair and was left uninhabited for a number if years. During the lockdown we took on the project if fixing it up and extending the kitchen to hold a dining table and modernising it while keeping the old character that we adored. It was a labour of love and we are so happy with the way it all turned out.
Guest access
The property is off the lane and has ample parking for a number of cars.
Other things to note
Just a wee note on the upstairs bedroom with the two single beds. It’s pretty cosy and you can stand in the middle but the pitch is quite low as it’s an old cottage. The stair up are also quite narrow so please be aware of that to make sure it suits.

Would you like some chickens to look after during your stay? We can provide you with some hens in a hutch in the garden and you can look after them and collect your own eggs for breakfast. (Cost for chickens for the duration of your stay is £40) let us know when you book.

The cottage has a wood burning stove which you are welcome to use. Please only use wood, the is an amble wood pile at the side of the cottage in the garden.

Lovely place in Irish countryside with lots of space
We stayed from Monday through to Sunday; 2 adults, 12 years old daughter and 2 dogs. We had a thoroughly lovely stay here with quiet surrounds, fresh eggs for breakfast and loads of space for the dogs to run around. We spent a little time initially ensuring the dogs couldn't get out the huge garden because of the sheep and horses that live around you (and who add to the feeling of "being away from it all" ) and they were then free to enjoy their holiday too! Rowallane gardens next door are beautiful and we had a pleasant afternoon strolling around and enjoying their cake and coffee. We had a brief initial problem with communications on arrival but this all seems to come from the VRBO messenger system not working correctly at either end, it was all quickly resolved and we had a fine stay. Thanks Simon, Abbie and Emma
