Perfect North Woods trip
The house was incredibly comfortable and incredibly charming. Great space with everything you need to enjoy McKenzie. Great outdoor spaces to relax and take in the fresh pine air. Could not have been happier with our stay!
We very much enjoyed our stay at McKenzie cottage. Very clean and so many amenities - we had everything we needed. Fishing on Big McKenzie was our main attraction, and it did not disappointed! Thanks Bob & Kathryn for your warm hospitality.
The cabin is clean, well equipped and decorated nicely. Dock for boat was easy to maneuver and chairs on dock for relaxing. Fishing did not disappoint. We used the cleaning station near cabin on-site. Fire pit and plenty of out door seating. Quiet, yet not isolated. Very nice hosts.
A great cabin in the woods on a nice lake. Very quiet during the week. Not terribly busy on the weekend either. The path from the dock is an uphill walk but we did not mind. Loved the real stone fireplace!
The lake house far exceeded our expectations. It is a spectacular location. The home and property were awesome. The house was clean and is stocked with everything you need. We had so much fun and were sad to go.
We had a great time at the cabin, relaxing and enjoying the lake and surrounding area! The cabin had all the things you would need for a week's stay and the hosts were great and available if you had any questions. Overall, it was a great week!
We had a great time at Kathryn’s house— the kitchen was very well equipped (even sharp knives!) and the house had everything we needed or wanted. Plus plenty of info about everything nearby. Thank you!
We had a great time at your cabin. Lovely sandy lake to wade into and relax in our beach chairs. The use of your kayaks was also very nice. Thanks for all your hospitality
We loved our stay at this cabin! It was very private and peaceful. The hostess were very friendly and accommodating as well. We hope to be back in the future!
This little cottage is so great! The cabin was very clean, and had all the amenities we could have needed. The owners live above the cabin, but were not obtrusive at all. They checked in on us just to make sure we didn't need anything. Everything was wonderful and we'll be staying again for sure!
The cottage, location and peaceful setting were perfect for our long weekend get-a-way with our family. Bob & Kathryn were wonderful hosts and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable! We will definitely be back!
Great blend of woods, lake and comfortably spaced out cottage.
Kathryn was very responsive to a our questions and provided detailed notes to help at all stages of our visit. Bob was insightful on how best to use the property so we could fully enjoy our family experience. The cottage was spacious with cozy sitting rooms, three comfortable bedrooms and roomy kitchen. The cottage deck provided a unique treehouse feel in the woods to nap, read or just enjoy the sounds of the woods. The large cement pad was great for grilling and eating outside on the picnic table. The dock was big enough to soak up the sun, enjoy the clear lake water and dock the boat. The use of their kayaks, canoe and firepit rounded out a beautiful week. Kathryn and Bob provided a great balance between providing privacy with a couple quick text check ins to make sure all is fine. Keep in mind the 5 min walk to and from the shore and cottage could be challenging for young toddlers or the elderly due to the incline. There is a service road that a 4x4 can use to help with that. Overall, absolutely loved our time at McKenzie cottage.
Pristine property located on a nice clear lake! Owners very accommodating and helpful. The sleeping loft over kitchen was a great bonus for our teenager and friend. It was a very hot week, but the single air conditioner cooled well with the help of multiple fans from home. The walking path to the dock is steep so be aware for the elderly, but it could accommodate an ATV if owners allow. Our pontoon was secured to owners dock and it was perfect for easy access to water. West Point Lodge is just up the way and has a great sandy swimming area where we anchored the pontoon multiple days. With all the amenities of home and location to neighboring towns, it was a great week! Thanks again Kathryn and Bob!
The McKenzie Cottage was a great place to spend a long weekend for my family. The cabin was very clean and cozy and the lake was beautiful. Thanks to Kathryn and Bob for their hospitality and insights into the local places to check out. Wish we could have stayed longer!
Very nice, clean cabin. It worked very well for us and our 2 grand children. They loved playing in the water right next to the dock. Fishing was good from the dock too!

About the host
Hosted by Kathryn Hoellen
This is a family cottage that we open up during the spring, summer and fall. We moved up to Big McKenzie from Chicago ten years ago and we live near the cottage so we are on hand for any questions you may have.
Why they chose this property
The cottage is surrounded by trees so you get the feeling you are in the woods but you do have direct access to the lake and get glimpses of the lake through the trees from the cottage deck. We do not have a beach but our shoreline is shallow with a sandy bottom.
What makes this property unique
Most guests that stay in our Cottage feel like they are staying in a friends home. We have decorated it to our taste and with the feeling that the cottage is an extension of our home and not a sterile hotel room.
