Six undisclosed surveillance devices.
There were at least six undisclosed surveillance devices—mostly motion activated cameras—in this vacation rental.
The house is managed by the British company Sleepaways Ltd, and belongs to a Spanish/German woman. After I sent photographic evidence of these surveillance devices to all involved parties, Booking dot com acknowledged a breach of their terms and conditions, initiated a security investigation, closed availability of the property on their platform, refunded the booking fee, and urged me to go to the police.
Sleepaways Ltd was sympathetic on the phone but declined my cancellation requests by first denying the existence of the surveillance devices, then claiming they had been switched off during my stay, and later suggesting that I may put a blanket over them.
Even if these devices were disconnected, a guest could not tell if this was true and would be forced to trust the person who is controlling them. I checked out after the incident. Sleepaways declined to refund the remaining 11 nights, costing me €1,600 and leaving me with a legitimate fear of being spied on.
In hindsight, the 29 different bunches of plastic flowers should have been a warning.
