Stalos is a charming seaside town in the city of Chania, Crete and it attracts a large number of visitors every summer due to its tourist development and its picturesque location. It is very well developed with countless cafes, restaurants, taverns and bars. The sandy beach of Kato Stalos, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and has been awarded a blue flag for its cleanliness and organization. Southward towards the mainland, Pano Stalos is a picturesque example of traditional Cretan architecture while surrounded by lush green olive groves and beautiful rock formations. Overall it is an excellent holiday destination, just 7 km west of Chania, the second largest city in Crete. It is an ideal base for exploring the island, with regular public transport to and from the city center. In the evenings, take a stroll along the promenade, where you can find many cafes, restaurants, cretan tavernas and bars. Fun fact: According to legend, Stalos was named after the bronze giant Talos who protected the island from enemies, but it is more likely that it was named after the Greek verb "stalizo", which means to stop for resting. Stalos was named after Talos, the bronze giant who circled Crete three times a day and protected it. According to legend, Talos had his home in the area of the present day Stalos. However, a second stronger view holds that "Stalos" took its name from the period of Ottoman rule, when Ottoman landowners stopped with their flocks so as to rest (or get stalled) in the area, that is, they gathered them for rest under the shade of the trees in the area before taking them to the neighboring town of Galatas for milking. The same interpretation exists for many other place names in Crete, such as Stalida (Heraklion). Note that the English word stall has the same Greek origin.
