Take advantage of the golden beach stretching from Whitby to Sandsend, which forms part of the stunning Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. Home to towering cliffs, rocky shores, steep wooded valleys, sheltered bays and sandy beaches, it is a coastline of dramatic views, with the highest point on the east coast of England found at Boulby, near Staithes. Here the cliffs are a mighty 200 metres high. There are photographic villages and tranquil bays dotted along the coast.
In Whitby itself, there is plenty to keep all ages entertained. Take the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, which is said to be the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s novel, ’Dracula’, or explore the myriad of curiosity shops. Famous for its fish and chips, Whitby has many award-winning seafood restaurants, as well as trendy bars along the harbour side.
Further afield is the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, which you can explore on the heritage steam train, departing from Whitby station, and see some stunning scenery. Alternatively, explore the traditional seaside town of Scarborough, the medieval walled city of York or the theme park and zoo at Flamingo Land.
