About this property

Finest Retreats | The Watchtower at Western Watch

Welcome to The Watchtower at Western Watch in Pendeen, Cornwall. This charming holiday property is a small and unique watchtower, perfect for two guests seeking a memorable getaway. The Watchtower offers breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding fields towards the sea, and the iconic Pendeen Lighthouse.

Originally a single-storey granite barn predating the main house, this historic structure underwent a remarkable transformation thanks to the ingenuity of William Waters, a local man who served as a ship's radio operator during the Second World War. Mr. Waters, with his access to nearby shipyards, skilfully incorporated authentic maritime elements such as portholes, railings, and various ship parts, creating an enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of a seafaring vessel.

During his time in The Watchtower, Mr. Waters amassed an impressive collection of early radios, including some of the pioneering Marconi models. These radios, along with his extensive collection, are now housed in a museum in Suffolk, preserving his legacy and contribution to maritime history. Step back in time as you explore this unique space, where history and maritime nostalgia intertwine.

Ideal for up to two guests, step inside to discover the open plan living area with self-catering kitchenette facilities, including fridge-freezer, countertop double hob, kettle, combi microwave, conventional oven and grill and toaster. The ground floor bathroom includes an electric shower, basin, heated towel rail and WC.

Head up the staircase to the upper floor, with double bed and original low beams (watch your head!), where you can head out through the ‘hatch’ and onto the The Lookout to enjoy the far-reaching views across the Cornish coast. Guests can enjoy a morning coffee on the sofa inside or evening glass of wine on the wraparound balcony. The Lookout can also be accessed via an external spiral staircase, and leads back down to the garden, including an outdoor seating area, two large areas of gardens both enjoying spectacular sea views. Although the garden is enclosed, guests are responsible for ensuring dogs remain supervised at all times.

The white lighthouse of Pendeen Watch is an easy downhill mile away for walkers and from there it's just 10 minutes' walk down a track to the sandy inlet of Beach Cove, which is good for swimming. A further 15 minute walk along the coast path will take you to the hidden beach of Portheras Cove, which was recently voted ‘Best Secret Beach’ by The Times newspaper. Intrepid adventurers can reach Portheras in around 20 minutes via the more challenging track behind the house.

In more recent years, The Watchtower became the art studio of Cornish painter and printmaker Angela Annesley. As you wander through the tower, you'll have the opportunity to admire Angela's artworks on display. As a guest, you'll enjoy exclusive access to Angela's collection, with the chance to purchase any of the pieces at discounted prices. For a broader selection of her work, you can visit her website at www.angelaannesley.co.uk.

I really enjoyed staying here!
First time I have seen so many stars at night! The area is beautiful and enjoyed my walk from lands end back to here (although my feet disagree!) Thank you for a wonderful place and would love to come back.

Lovely property and area
Loved everything about the quirky accommodation, clean, tidy, and the breathtaking views were fantastic even when it wasn&#39t so nice weather. A relaxing place is just what we needed. Great for walks and visiting other areas of Cornwall. Friendly local people. We will be visiting again. There is nothing to dislike.

Beautiful location, the house is tiny, but nice.
The watchtower is in a beautiful location, just behind another house. It is a cute house, with a beautiful view. You look at the ocean above in the observation tower. The bed was very uncomfortable. Small, but above all a very collapsed mattress. If you put a decent bed in the observation tower, instead of under the sloping part, you will great there! The WiFi was very bad. Please indicate this in the description.

Perfect mindful cottage with sea view
Beautiful cottage with such a fun and interesting design and the most incredible views of the ocean (with stunning sunsets). Everything I needed on a working trip, including quiet and a comfortable bed. I could have sat in the Watchtower room til the end of days. The access to the coastline and footpaths was ideal to wind down at the end of the day, too. And I loved the decor, especially the beautiful artwork. Owners left me to privacy but were quick to respond to texts when I had any queries. Excellent! I’d recommended to anyone looking for a bit of peace in a rural setting.

Fabulous location - within walking distance of the coast, the coast path and near to local shop.
Well placed for exploring West Cornwall. Accommodation was clean and well equipped. The upstairs bedroom is under the eaves so is not so easy for people with mobility issues. The room off this, with all round sea views, is delightful.

Functional and good location
o flexibility on an early check in. We arrived earlier than planned as we didn&#39t know what traffic would be like. We arrived and the cleaner was busy sorting everything out as we expected. Cleaner said the property would be ready in an hour so we went for a walk and left her to it. Arrive an hour later. Cleaner gone. Property locked. We walked up the drive, ready to sleep as we were both exhausted. The owner stopped us and refused us entry. She made us sit on the drive to wait until 4pm, despite a long journey, the heat (heatwave week) and the property being ready and locked. A little while later, we knocked on to ask for some water and no reply. Not the most welcoming start. The property doesn&#39t feel very private being so close to the owners' house. It isn&#39t sectioned off in away to afford you privacy. The bedroom is not ideal as you can only stand up in the middle. We had a great week but I wouldn&#39t book again sadly.
