About this property

Barn Apt on Tranquil Historic Farm--Amazing Views

Beautiful, spacious loft-style apartment in barn on historic farm 25 miles northwest of Baltimore. Quiet, lovely, and peaceful, surrounded on all sides by farmland in conservation. Perfect for a relaxing, tranquil getaway, but within easy commute to Baltimore metro area.

A spacious loft style apartment with a large open living room, dining area & kitchen on the first level. Wood burning stove in LR (wood can be bought locally). Radiant heat on first floor, 2 ceiling fans, and three Mitsubishi split units for further heating and cooling. Modern kitchen with stainless stove, fridge, and dishwasher, including microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker -- but no garbage disposal, as we're on a septic system. Main bathroom on ground level has been recently upgraded with soaking tub and new tile, etc. Bathroom has stackable W&D on first floor. Library in 2nd floor loft area. Bedroom with queen bed and 1/2 bath on 3rd floor. Bedroom has wall unit AC/heater. There is a small balcony overlooking a walled flower garden.

This is the ideal get-away for a weekend or a few weeks. You'll see no neighbors, wake up to the sun rising over the rolling fields, sip your coffee at the table on the balcony--with great views to the surrounding 100 acres--relax on the cozy couch and (on a cold day) watch the fire roaring in the wood stove, take a break to watch the birds from the huge wall of windows, spend a couple of hours browsing through the library on the second level, where you'll find all kinds of great books, then pop a DVD into the player downstairs and watch a classic movie--selected from the large in-house DVD selection--or stream a movie from the free wi-fi.  And, if you want a little exercise, walk the grounds, where you'll find all kinds of natural treasures: a huge array of flowers and plants and some old trees of historic proportions, including one of the biggest beech trees in the state.

Our 6-acre farm is just at the outer reaches of the NW Baltimore suburbs, in northern Reisterstown. The town of Reisterstown, 4 miles away, has an historic downtown. Westminster, 8 miles north, has a larger historic downtown and is home to McDaniel College. Both towns have nice restaurants and other local attractions. Just south of Reisterstown are Owings Mills, Pikesville, and Towson, large metropolitan suburbs of Baltimore. All have a large variety of restaurants and shopping. Owings Mills has a subway station (only 15 min away) that travels into downtown Baltimore. We are only about 20-25 min from Pimlico racetrack in NW Baltimore. We are just 35 miles south of Gettysburg and many Pennsylvania attractions, including historic sites, orchards, parks, antiques, flea markets, and local ice cream. We will provide guests with an extensive list of local resources and favorite food stops.

Charming "curated" multi-level barn
Someone with an artistic eye "curated" this multi-level barn home, making it comfy, laid-back, and a delight to stay in. The library mezzanine with a large writing desk and comfy leather chairs was a special treat. We had a wonderful, relaxed time!

Perfect Retreat
Our overall impression of the property and our stay was extremely favorable. It is just as advertised, a perfect writer’s retreat. It was a lovely place to call home for 36 or so hours! We would love to come back again some time in the future. Thank you for having us!

Rural but close to everything needed
We thought we'd soak up a bit of rural Maryland while visiting our college daughter in Westminster. The barn was everything it promised to be and more! It is like staying in a piece of refurbished history, updated for today but still providing that century+ magic. We especially loved the second floor loft with the open bookshelves and great view. The bathroom and kitchen were adequate for our needs although I probably would not cook a full meal there. I have already provided the listing number to a few people who requested it based on my social media photos of our stay. We live in a rural area so are used to opening/closing gates but city dwellers may not understand that is expected upon entering the property. We loved our time there and highly recommend!

Tranquil Setting - Great Location
Very Private and peaceful but also close to everything. This was our second stay and we enjoyed the barn and the surrounding areas as much as we did the first time. Perfect place to relax and reflect. Ron & Jill are the perfect hosts! We hope to return next year.

Wonderful Retreat
The apartment is an absolutely wonderful retreat with all the amenities you could really possibly need. The owners were friendly but respected your privacy, the apartment itself is even better in person, and the back deck was a great place to read. Would absolutely recommend.

The Triplets Birthday Weekend
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. We were there for our grandsons birthday weekend. The owners were attentive to our every need before arriving, answering any questions and helping out with whatever we needed. They were even gracious enough to allow us to enter the property earlier than expected, which was really appreciated as we had traveled from Savannah, GA. All the amenities were sufficient, not luxury, and it was perfect for our us. The apartment is not air conditioned in itself, but the master bedroom on the third floor does have an air conditioner that kept it nice for sleeping. The property owners were there to help, but not smothering. Very gracious and kind, they are constantly improving and renovating the property repurposing materials, it is refreshing to see. We made our meals in house and the kitchen had everything we needed to do that. Including coffee maker, water purifier, full size fridge and all the pots and pans you could imagine. It was perfect as we don’t like eating at Restaurants when traveling; we prefer to make our own meals. The master bedroom had a twin size bed which was a little too soft and small for our liking, but it didn’t hinder our sleep. After spending a day with the triplets, it was a welcome sight. The master bedroom is on the third floor and has a half bath and air conditioner. The living room / kitchen area has TV with Netflix (that's all we really needed) and local channels. There were a plethora of books to peruse and some interesting articles around the apartment. The surrounding areas for activity; we hiked at Liberty Reservoir about every day, taking new paths and adventures. If you are really adventurous and into walking, we recommend the Liberty Dam Road walk. We parked at the entrance (Liberty Dam Rd & Wards Chapel Rd) and walked to the dam (there is a road that you can drive to the dam), which has some amazing views. It is a 1.8 mile walk and somewhat challenging for experienced walkers. In the mornings we would watch deer meandering across the fields from the back porch while having our coffee. It is very quiet both at night and in the morning. Thank you Mr. Ron and Miss Jill for the beautiful place and stay.

Relaxing and peaceful.
My husband and I live on 12 acres in the country in Alabama and just don't like the hustle and bustle of city life, so whenever we travel, we prefer to stay outside the city. We stayed May 3rd to May 9th. We were having a family reunion in Maryland and decided to stay a whole week to make it a sight-seeing vacay to D.C. Every single night we looked forward to coming back to this nice, renovated barn. This was SO much better than a hotel. We had everything we needed plus privacy.....no late night hotel door slams or listening to arguments through the walls. Nothing to keep us from sleeping through the night. I have a bulging disc in my lower back so most beds in hotels and even in rental houses hurt me. Not here! The bed is so soft, I didn't hurt at all. Every night I was comfortable and had a good night's sleep, and woke up each morning without ANY back pain. It is a bit too bouncy for my liking but that's probably because I have a memory foam bed at home and not used to moving like that. We stopped at the local grocery store and bought a few supplies like eggs, butter, bread, milk, etc. so we had breakfast there every morning and headed off to visit the capitol, the memorials and museums in D.C. After all the rushing and running around in the city, dodging people left and right, coming back to this barn was an absolute reprieve. It's so quiet there and so pretty to look around and see nothing but fields and trees and the lovely cats wandering around the property. Especially the adorable orange tabby - so curious and such a sweet face! We truly felt at home here. The owners were busy doing their own thing around the property and we were gone all day, so the only times we saw them were when we first arrived (Ron showed us around, gave us the key, then gave us our privacy) and the night before we left for just a few moments to say goodbye and thank him for a great stay. I really regret not having the time to walk around the property - it really is a beautiful place. I hope to come back here.....if for no other reason than to walk the property and pet the cats. Oh! And the cutie-patootie "guarding" Basset Hounds, too! Seriously, we enjoyed every moment being here.

Wonderful, tranquil location, the apartment was clean and inviting.
We enjoyed the character of the barn, the vast library of books, and visitation of some friendly cats. We took a three mile stroll in the woods in the liberty reservoir nearby and used the kitchen to fix our meals. We would not hesitate to return for another stay...would be even better for three nights!

Cozy, peaceful getaway. Everything I could have asked for! Highly recommend!!
The owners are very sweet and completely mind their own business. Any questions I had were answered right away. The property is an adorable little farm with their own organic vegetable garden they let me harvest out of. I stayed here for a month and it was everything I needed. The barn has been renovated beautifully but still with a very welcomed cozy feel. I really enjoyed my stay and would absolutely stay here again.

Bucolic
Was the perfect place for us. 20 minutes from the children and grandchildren and a beautiful retreat when we had a little time to ourselves . Plenty of room and privacy. Kitchen very well equipped and plenty of books and magazines to read including one by Ron which we both read and loved. Bedroom views were awesome with the full moon shining in and sunrises to awaken us. Our only regret is that even with a ten day stay we didn't have enough time there. Ron met us when we arrived with homemade cookies and the whole experience was welcoming and friendly. The surrounding farm fields offered beautiful views and lighting and you felt far removed from the bustle of city life but close enough to get there when desired. It was a step back in time with all of the amenities of modern day.

About the host

Hosted by Ron Tanner

Host profile image
Ron and Jill are DIY experts and dedicated preservationists. In 2015, they bought Good Contrivance Farm, a neglected historic family farm that had been owned by the same family for 5 generations.

Since then, they have been restoring the farm to its former glory (it hadn't been altered since 1959) and they have created a 501 C3 non-profit whose mission is to promote the preservation and restoration of historic family farms.

Why they chose this property

We were looking for an historic family farm with a cool old house and cool old buildings--because, not only are we history buffs and nature lovers but we're also DIY experts who love a big project. And we got a big project here because the farm--which had been in the same family for five generations--had not been touched since 1959. We've been working non-stop to bring the farm back to its original splendor and then some.

What makes this property unique

Good Contrivance Farm has the benefit of being throughly historic, with most of its original buildings, and thoroughly beautiful, surrounded by 100 acres of conserved land. The barn apartment showcases an eclectic mix of old and new.

The 6-acre core of the property has beautiful plantings, huge old trees, and splendid views. The farm has plenty of places to sit in leisure and lots of places to walk. We have two large fields, a country lane, a formal garden, and many little pockets of natural beauty. It's a fabulous place to relax and settle into country life.

At the same time, Good Contrivance Farm is incredibly close to major shopping, highways, restaurants, and local attractions. It offers you the best of both worlds: you can use the Farm as a base to explore historic sites like Gettysburg (35 miles north), the big city sights of Baltimore (24 miles south), local farmers' markets and fairs, not to mention some of the best antiquing in the nation. Ron and Jill will provide you with all the insider info. and recommendations.
