About this property
Authentic Chautauqua Institution cottage, Great location, Whole house
Experience the real Chautauqua! This home is a classic, flower-decked Victorian in one of the Institution’s most charming neighborhoods. This cozy residence is a perfect home base for experiencing Chautauqua. The circa-1895 cottage has been treasured by our family for decades. We hope you will love it as much as we do!
This home has modern conveniences in a comfortable, old-fashioned cottage setting. It has a large front porch, with one end reserved for al fresco dining and the other end furnished with classic, cushioned wicker furniture for relaxing and reading, or doing nothing but enjoying this wonderful part of the Grounds.
Through the front door, you enter the living room and go through the dining room to the fully-equipped kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is a full bath with combination tub/shower and a bedroom with bunk beds. In the front of the house, next to the living room, is the larger bedroom with twin beds that can be put together to form a king. It has a convenient en suite half bathroom.
Upstairs you'll find three bedrooms, a bathroom with combination tub/shower, another kitchen, and a cozy screened porch furnished for living and dining. The first upstairs bedroom has twin beds that can also be moved together to form a king. A second upstairs bedroom has a daybed with a trundle, while the third and smallest bedroom has bunk beds (this bedroom is quite cozy and best suited for small children). The upstairs kitchen has a portable dishwasher, a stacking washer/dryer, and a refrigerator, gas range/oven, microwave, cabinets, sink, toaster, and microwave.
With its two porches and two kitchens, this house is ideal for multi-generational gatherings.
Climate Control: Bedrooms feature window AC units, and there is a portable AC unit in the living/dining area.
Location: Wonderful location on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution, just one block from the Brick Walk, between Wythe and Warren Avenues. This is a central location in Old Chautauqua between the Amphitheater and Hall of Philosophy, a few steps to corner tram stop (runs only during the Season).
Our goal is to provide everything you need for a comfortable, memorable Chautauqua vacation. The neighborhood is perfect for everyone from grandparents to kids, with neighbors who are friendly yet respectful of everyone's privacy. During the Season, the Children's School bus stops a block away at Lincoln Park, and trams stop just steps away at the corner of Foster and Wythe. Come join us at 39 Foster for an authentic and culturally stimulating Chautauqua experience!
Parking & Yard: Guests may purchase parking in one of the institution’s nearby lots during the Season. During the off-season, parking for one car is available for free in the driveway next to the house. Additional cars may park in the South Lot, just a five-minute walk away. There is a small, grassy yard with a charcoal grill.
Decoration and Furnishings: The house is fully furnished and decorated in a traditional “Old Chautauqua” style, including some antiques. Hundreds of books plus a handful of board games are tucked away on shelves throughout the home for your enjoyment during your stay here.
Cleaning: The house is carefully cleaned before the start of your stay.
Supplies: The house is fully-equipped with linens, towels (including a few beach towels), dishes, flatware, and cooking utensils. You don’t need to bring anything; just unpack and enjoy all that Chautauqua has to offer!
Smoking & Pets: There is NO smoking of any kind on the property (this includes the front porch, yard, and driveway). We will consider pets on a case-by-case basis.
Internet access: WiFi throughout.
