About the host

Hosted by Helen Phillips

Host profile image
We are Harvey and Helen Phillips and we have lived all over the world before settling back in North Devon with our two children. We met at college running a May ball, and always talked about setting up our own business running events and hospitality. In 2014 we bought a huge near-derelict stately home with 100 rooms, 28 bedrooms and more than 120 windows, and have spent the past nine years lovingly restoring it into the venue we have today. We have been running the holiday apartments since 2019 and every now and then we host a wedding or party too. We live in the upper floor and attic space, so are around and happy to help if needed, or chat about the house, its history and surroundings, if interested - or leave you in peace if not!

Why they chose this property

Bideford is a quiet historic port town on the Torridge river estuary, surrounded by quaint fishing villages and rural farmland and within the UNESCO Biosphere, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Surfing Reserve. Moreton House lies on the very edge of town within easy reach of the beach at Westward Ho!, a two-mile stretch of sand with a wetland nature reserve at one end and dramatic rocky coastline at the other. From here, it's easy to explore everything that North Devon has to offer, with Exmoor and Dartmoor both within an easy drive, the North Cornwall coast a mere 30 mins away, and Clovelly, one of the most instagrammable villages in Britain, just 15 mins along the road. The beaches of Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe are close by, as are the Southwest Coast Path and Tarka Trail (keep an eye out for otters). Quieter than more often visited South Devon, the north coast offers a more wild and rugged landscape, all just an hour from the M5.
