About this property

Spectacular waterfront home with panoramic views on 4 private acres !

3 beds and 2 baths home with modern gourmet kitchen on 4 private waterfront acres. This quintessential Maine home is named in memory of Tides, our beloved yellow Labrador Retriever of 13 years, and the ocean tides which will quickly become your best friend and companion when staying at our beautiful Maine retreat. An environmentally friendly home—powered by solar and an automatic standby generator—nestled on 4 waterfront acres with a private road. Our home has a direct path to our private rock beach and water's edge deck offering direct access to the water and Casco Bay. This large family house features 3 large bedrooms and 2 full baths, including the master bedroom and a master bath en suite on the main living level. This very private residence offers a unique setting to "get away from it all” and unwind. Yet it is also within a 12 minute drive to Brunswick, only 45 minutes to Portland Airport. and roughly 2 1/2 hour drive to Boston.

A perfect few days for us might be spent kayaking right in front of our residence, watching the sunrise over the water, possibly catching a glimpse of an eagle, watching the lobster boats go by while having breakfast, walking down our private road and taking in the beautiful scenery. We will often simply enjoy watching the ocean tides (we have an 11 foot tide) and also walking on the muddy tidal flats which at low tide extend several hundred yards into the bay. A visit to Brunswick to the "Crystal Farms" farmers market for some of the local produce is a favorite Saturday morning adventure. We highly recommend bringing home some of the local seafood, dining on our enormous deck with a glass of wine, as the moon shines on the water, flooding the house with lunar light.
Close by is the historic Town of Bath and a little further down the coastal highway is "Reds" where you can feast on world renown lobster rolls (be prepared to stand in line) .
Being die hard "foodies" we love that we can be in Portland in about 45 minutes and dine at some of the finest restaurants that New England has to offer with excellent choices in farm to table dining. "The Street" and "Fore Street" are two favorites and a visit to Portland is not complete without a stop at "Standard Bakery" and "Becky's Diner". If you love sushi then a visit to "Miyake" is a gastronomical experience to be savored. We also recommend checking out some of Portland’s exciting night life with an excellent selection of ocean front bars and local breweries – it’s a good time and you can always take an UBER back to Harpswell. Don't want to drive to Portland then stay local and check out a nearby dining treasure (in season) at "Morse's Cribstone Grill".
A good way to work off all that food would be a trip to nearby Bradbury State Park for a hike to the top of the mountain or, weather permitting, kayaks are available for rental and can be delivered directly to the house.
A visit to "LL Bean", along with the other fine retail outlet shops, is almost a requirement in nearby Freeport. Take the scenic Pleasant Hill road back to Brunswick and perhaps stop off first at "Bow Street Market" . Brunswick is one of our favorite towns and has so much to offer from restaurants, pubs , art galleries, Bowdoin College and did I mention "Gelato Fiasco"?

You will be wondering where the time went and will understand why they say: "There are only two types of people in the world , those who live in Harpswell and those that wish they did".

Note- In the "about Stan" you will see information to a magnificent Quinta in Sintra, Portugal which we also manage (see last two pictures in our Tides Listing) . We offer luxurious accommodations for up to 20 people in two adjoining villas with a total of 10 rooms .

Perfect Getaway!

We had such a great time staying here! The house was clean and in a perfect location to access so many great trails, beaches, restaurants, etc. And the property manager and homeowner both reached out ahead of time and day of check-in to make sure we had everything we needed, making communication so easy while we were there. We had a lovely vacation. Thanks so much!

Serene and wonderful

My family of 4 all enjoyed this very comfortable and attractive house thoroughly. The accommodations are all in place and easy to use, and the surroundings are classy and fun. Within driving distance to everything, yet the best of all is right there in the backyard. The most calming and enjoyable to us was the sitting dock overseeing a pristine wildlife preserve.

Human tested, Dog Approved

The place is great. It was clean and well kept. The view was amazing and the deck was perfect (even in the cold temps). The kitchen had everything you could want. We are hoping to come back in the summer to kayak or SUP. Delightfully isolated, but still close to town making it easy to get groceries and go exploring for the day.

Great place

We stayed at the Tides for the first time this July. The ower was very reaponsive and provided all the necessary information for the home. As well as checked in with us durring our stay to make sure things were going well. The house was very clean and there was plently of supplies. The views were amazing. The only downside was there were tons of mosquitos so make sure to bring bug spray! Would absolutly recommend staying here!

Perfect retreat!

The Tides is secluded and quiet but also minutes from amenities such as grocery stores, restaurants, shopping outlets and smaller shops. The house is clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. This includes a whole-house generator which kicked on early one evening when the power went out for a short time. We continued to have power - didn’t skip a beat! Communication from the owner and property manager was exceptional. Thanks!

Fabulous time at the Tides.

We had a great time. Close to Brunswick and Bowdoin's Schiller Coastal Center. We spent most of our time at the shore behind the house, enjoying the radically different experience at high and low and in between tides. We had kayaks delivered and loved it - saw bald eagles 3 times, and great blue herons, and dozens of other birds both while kayaking and while just sitting along the shore. At low tide, we loved poking along the shore line in water shoes, finding crabs, horseshoe crabs, snails. My daughter built a miniature village out of sticks and shells along the stream that leads down from the house. The deck is lovely, and the house was perfect and light filled. Beds comfortable, cool, kitchen was well stocked. Plenty of shade and sun - whatever you like best. Thank you!

Staying at Tides in April

I leased Tides for 7 days the view of Casco bay is always stunning no matter which months you visit. The house was okay, wish it was more cozy, throw rugs would have been a plus since hard wood floors can be tough on the feet. Also cooking was a challenge since in my opinion cookware was outdated, plates limited for someone that loves to cook for the family especially now we must adjust since most restaurants are limited with their hours due to last year pandemic, our favorite butcher also closed in the area. Also wish there was a ash container available to transport wood stove ash outside .Other than these little hiccups, the owner Stan was timely with reservations and innkeeper was available when we phoned him.

Clean and well stocked; beautiful view

Stayed 5 nights at The Tides for our first visit to Maine. The house was very clean and really well-stocked with basic necessities, even items like q-tips, shampoo, conditioner, and laundry detergent that aren't always provided in rentals. The kitchen was great with more cookery and tools than we could ever need. The location is beautiful, quiet, and private. I think we only saw one other person in the area, and we enjoyed the views from the living room and deck. We also found it very easy to access the dock by the gentle path from the driveway. The only issue we ran into was with the hot water. While there was plenty for a single shower, we were not able to run both showers simultaneously as the hot water ran out almost immediately when we tried that. The home is somewhat dated and the furniture (sofa, pillows, mattresses) could use a little updating. They are clean and perfectly usable, but beginning to get a little worn down. Otherwise, we were very happy with our stay and would absolutely recommend The Tides and would stay here again.

Inaccurate advertising re: "beach", but a nice house

The PROS: - Comfortable and well-appointed home on a private lot (though the mattresses were decidedly not comfortable and I would expect better at this price point). The CONS: - Inaccurately advertised. The listing mentions "Our home has a direct path to our private beach and water's edge deck offering direct access to the water and Casco Bay." This is not true -- there is no private "beach." What they are calling the "beach" is actually yards of thick mud (which your feet will sink into) you have to walk through to get into the water without a boat. Our child cried because she was so disappointed. We were willing to pay the premium price to stay here due to the claim of beach access because we knew it would be difficult to drive to the beach with small children. Welp, we still ended up having to drive to the beach because the beach at this property is a literal mud beach. I grew up near rocky coastline and am familiar with rocky beaches -- that is not the issue here. The issue here is mud, which is just not traversable by foot. This place is really only good for people who don't care about beach access or who would access the water by boat/kayak only. I wouldn't be so negative in my review if I didn't feel that there were some serious misrepresentation of the property in the listing. I even went back and checked the wording to make sure it wasn't just me mis-remembering how it was advertised - nope. The quotes here in my review are taken verbatim from the listing as of my writing this today. It looks like they may have reduced the price since we booked this place... now if they only corrected this misrepresentation in the listing, this could be a good place to stay. - Very buggy. Just be prepared to have to use a lot of bug spray.

Perfect In Every Regard.

Our stay at the tides was exceptional. The house was immaculate upon arrival, with a surplus of all the supplies necessary for our stay. From Keurig pods, pots and pans, to paper towels, the home was clearly stocked with thoughtfulness and convenience as the prime motivation. The owners have maintained the home with a great deal of love, as is evidenced by the small antiques about the house, and the incredible landscaping. Flowering Rhododendron shrubs the size of trees, elegant floral beds, two firepit areas, and a delightful wandering path down to the water. Commensurate with the name, the cove in front of the house is subject to 7' - 9' foot tidal changes. The Tidal Clock in the house ensured that we could plan each day accordingly, and so we swam, fished, and launched kayaks each day from the rocks, and explored the charming estuaries that surround the house from the water. The waterline has a raised deck with gravity chairs where one can while away the hours with a cup of coffee or glass of wine, staring at the seals, small offshore islands, and the lobstermen out checking their pots. The house is strategic to several excellent local restaurants, gift shops, and within 7 minutes of a full sized grocery store. Driving the island we discovered a myriad of small signs leading us to wharf side lobster shacks, oyster sellers, and fishmongers that afforded us the luxury of feasting on fresh and affordable seafood every day. One remarkable aspect was the noticeable absence of heavy tourist traffic. We did the expected day trips to Boothbay Harbor, Bath, & Portland, which whilst lovely, reminded us of how intimate and secluded the area is where we were staying. No hawkers of cheap t-shirts near the Tides.. No long waits for mediocre food. And no traffic jams to get there. As far as communication was concerned, everything was so equitable and satisfying during our stay, that we never required any contact at all with the owners or property manager. However in the buildup to our arrival, they were overtly friendly, incredibly gracious, and zealous in their efforts to ensure that we had a memorable time. Overall the experience was so perfect, that my wife fell into a deep state of melancholy when we were packing to leave, and is now demanding that we find a way to buy the house and move there permanently. Our stay was a pure delight. One we plan to revisit.

Great Week in Maine

We visit Maine every summer for a week. We have stayed in various locations but more often than not, stay around Brunswick. We absolutely loved our stay at The Tides. The location is excellent. We like being close to the water but also close to Brunswick. This was a perfect spot. We also particularly liked the outdoor spaces. The deck/patio area is wonderful. We spent every morning and evening outside. We also were very happy with the kitchen. It is well stocked, and we were able to cook some wonderful meals there. We would definitely stay here again in the future if it's available.

Wonderful Space

We thoroughly enjoyed this property and it’s location overlooking the cove. It’s quiet and serene yet close to everything the area has to offer. The hime’s 3 bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and it’s nice to have 2 full baths especially when you have a group staying with you. The kitchen is well equipped with a gas range and there’s also a large gas grill out on the roomy deck that wraps two sides of the house with nice seating and eating areas. There are also 2 outdoor fire pits with water views and a platform deck space out over the water. The house has great heat and a wood stove. The big screen tv in the living room has streaming with access to Netflix and Amazon Prime as well as YouTube and Xfinity. The communication with the owner and the caretaker was excellent and we appreciated the phone call just before our arrival to acclimate us to the house and it’s features. Thanks for a great stay!

We have lived in Europe and the USA but the beauty and serenity of Harpswell reminds us of our years living on the coast of Portugal . When we are not in Harpswell we might be found on Long Island , NY or visiting our sons in Manhattan or in Washington DC or back in Portugal.

I grew up in Carcavelos, off the coast of Portugal a few kilometers from Sintra (about 30 minutes from Lisbon the capital of Portugal). Sintra is a magical place known for its extraordinary beauty and ancient Quintas, Palaces and Castles, the most famous of which is the Palacio Da Pena once the summer residence of the Portuguese Royal family and the renowned jewel in the crown of the Sintra Hills. My grandmother had a house on the foothills of Sintra and I vividly recall the magic and beauty of my many summers in the area. Over the years we have lived and visited Sintra/Cascais many times and one of the reasons we acquired “The Tides” in Maine is the remarkable similarity to the coast of Portugal.

Recently I have partnered with old friends and acquaintances to offer exceptional accommodations and events in Sintra , Portugal at two adjoining Quintas (Estates).

https://www.vrbo.com/2299831

We can manage spectacular events such a birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, renewal of vows etc. hosted at The Quintas, all managed by our team of professionals in Portugal. We can pick you up at the airport, host your event , offer tours and hand holding throughout your stay (you will be provided with a 24/7 mobile contact phone number of your event host throughout your stay). Or you can just book your stay with us and enjoy our luxurious accommodations !

Why they chose this property

While having lived on or near the coasts of Western Europe and East Coast USA we have never owned a piece of our own waterfront property that was private and with the stunning views offered by this property . After many months of looking we fell in love with Harpswell . The house is only 6 miles from Brunswick and 45 minutes to Portland Me . It is difficult to believe that such beauty and privacy can exist within only a 10 minute drive to the very cosmopolitan town of Brunswick and home of Bowdoin College.

What makes this property unique

The sunrises and rising moon views over the water make this a unique place . We love the vaulted ceiling and the large stone fireplace . Master bedroom and master bath on main level of house is so very convenient and we will never buy another house in New England that doesn't have a wood burning stove. Being able to walk to the waters edge and watch the lobster boats and wild life while sipping morning coffee is something that is priceless. Very private (adjoining property to the south sits on 80 acres) yet within 6 mins drive to excellent shopping and within 45 mins to some of the finest restaurants in the USA in Portland Me. Surrounding our home are the great outdoors immediately offering kayaking , fishing, swimming, hiking and wild life watching to name a few .
