About this property
Heart of Matlock top floor apt
Perched on top floor (2nd, sorry no lift) is a characterful apt in the heart of Matlock. In its former life, the building was the Olde Englishe Hotel (established late 19th century). The apartment has been thoroughly modernised while the external architecture still retains its eclectic Elizabethan charm. The bay window provides a panoramic view of Dale Road and the distant hills while allowing ample of natural light to diffuse the open living area.
Conveniently located on the ground floor is the tastefully decorated restaurant pub Remarkable Hare, and a stone away, relaxing cocktail bars and an award winning cafe-patisserie (Cool River). Strategically situated on Dale Road - the traditional shopping street - allows easy access to a motley of independent businesses selling antiques, assorted collectibles and gifts. For the gastronomes, there are Italian, Indian and Thai on offer including fine dining at The Stones (mentioned in the Michelin Guide).
Less than 2 minutes saunter takes one to the picturesque Victorian park of Hall Leys, where a miniature steam train (endearingly named Little David) and boating lake (environmentally friendly electric boats) await those with children … or adults young at heart. Take a moment to stand on the four arches Matlock Bridge and watch River Derwent’s soothing cascades.
A half a mile tranquil amble downstream brings one to the imposing limestone outcrops (High Tor). Get a 360 degree panoramic view of Derbyshire Dale in Britain’s first Alpine-style cable car up to Abraham Heights before settling in for some fish and chips (number of shops can rival any seaside town) in Matlock Bath. Gulliver’s Kingdom and the quirky Matlock Bath Aquarium are conveniently situated in the same town for those looking for a family fun-filled day!
Seasoned ramblers can use this abode as a base for the myriad of established walking trails (on numerous websites) to suite all level of fitness. There are doorstep direct buses to Bakewell, Buxton and connection to further afield into the Peaks. The Matlock Bus Station and Grade II listed Rail Station are about 300 metres away (3 mins walk). Peak Rail runs a heritage locomotive to Rowsley, providing 8 miles of scenic round trip and a brief journey into a bygone age.
With these and more to look forward to - come and have a relaxing retreat in apartment at Olde Englishe.
