About the host
Hosted by Helen Kerr
Hi! We're Helen and Tim.
We took over Gulabin Lodge in April 2022 and have loved every minute of our time here in the Scottish Highlands. Our four kids, who have all left home, come and stay with us regularly; an unexpected and most welcome pleasure for us. Our two labradors have adapted brilliantly to mountain life and love the freedom that this area offers to four-legged friends. We've both got a background in hospitality and customer service, so being able to "live" our work feels natural as well as fun.
We've met people from all over the world, with about a third of our guests coming back year after year, giving us the joy of watching guests' kids grow up. We'd never thought that this might be one of the highlights of running a business like this!

Why they chose this property
We've always loved the mountains. Clean air, fresh water, solitude, big skies, great views. Stepping out of the door and into nature is the best way to start the day.
High summer sees us enjoying 20 hours of daylight; all the more time in which to enjoy the wildlife that is teeming around us. In winter, we love the snows; Glenshee Ski Centre is just 10 minutes up the road.
From our door we can hit 9 munros, although, unlike some of our mountaineer guests, not all in one day! We've discovered some fantastic places to eat and drink; guests with an interest in food need only ask us if they'd like some recommendations.

What makes this property unique
The Lodge was originally a manse (home for the minister - the small mountain kirk is just beyond the end of our drive). A local historian tells us that there's been a dwelling on the site for hundreds of years. The thick, stone walls of the oldest part of the building bear testament to a long history. There's a real old-world vibe to the Lodge.
We sit right below the mighty Ben Gulabin. The views from the Lodge are spectacular, especially from the dining room, which is glazed on three sides.
The ground floor bedrooms are Austrian Tyrolian style, with mezzanine levels accessed by stair ladders. They were hand built by an Austrian mountain man who had settled in the area and wanted to create a taste of home for his guests. We've been very happy to keep with this tradition!
Our first floor rooms are more traditional in layout, meaning that guests have got a decent choice of room style to consider.
We think we might be the only bunkhouse in Scotland with a glockenspiel, but you never know; there might be another one hidden away somewhere in these beautiful hills.
