Coastal granite quarries represent an important chapter in the history of the Maddalena archipelago, beginning to be exploited in the mid-1800s and later exported to many parts of the world. One of the most famous quarries is that of Cala Francese, known for its pink-white granite, active until World War II and now accessible to the public. In addition to its natural beauty, it offers evidence of its industrial history, such as railway tracks, old machinery, a small train and a crane.
Located south of the promontories of Punta Carlotto and Punta Testiccioli, Cala Francese is a wide inlet characterised by several small rocky beaches and a small beach of light-coloured sand, surrounded by polished pebbles. Protected by two cliffs, it offers a predominantly sandy and deep seabed. The surrounding environment, with its granite rocks and Mediterranean maquis, makes it a gem of the Maddalena archipelago, which boasts 45 kilometres of coastline characterised by cliffs, inlets and coves.
Documenting all the projects realised with granite from Cala Francese in Italy and around the world would be a titanic challenge, but the use of the historical archives of Cala Francese and the municipality of La Maddalena has been fundamental in identifying the various works and the places where they have been used, even after so much time. An analysis of the supplies shows that much of the granite extracted from Cala Francese was used for road paving, given its exceptional compressive strength. Tester testimonies since the early 1900s have confirmed the cost-effectiveness and low maintenance requirements of this stone. For example, the Cala Francese granite used in the paving of Via Roma in Genoa has maintained an excellent condition despite more than 30 years of heavy traffic. Despite the 115 years that have passed since the installation of the first street paving slabs in Genoa, the 40-year hypothetical guarantee mentioned in the contracts between the Company and the Municipality have been far exceeded, demonstrating the durability of these materials. The Società Esportazione Graniti Sardi, based in Genoa, has played a key role in the supply of quality granite, to the extent that it has established itself both nationally and internationally.
To the south of Cala Francese, lie Punta Tegge and the fascinating Nido d\'Aquila, while to the north lie wind-shaped rocks and white dune beaches such as Bassa Trinita, Cala Lunga and Monti d\'Arena. To the east, beyond the isthmus connecting La Maddalena to Caprera, lies the enchanting scenery of Spalmatore. From La Maddalena, it is possible to explore the other islands in the national park, such as Santo Stefano, Budelli (with its famous Pink Beach), Razzoli, Santa Maria and Spargi.
