About this property

St James: Light, airy house with garden near Exeter university and town centre.

Enjoy having the best of all worlds: a city centre stay with easy access to beaches and countryside and a comfortable, well equipped house and walled garden to relax in. The house is in the middle of the popular and quirky St James area of Exeter - a mix of students and permanent residents; everything is on your doorstep - Exeter university (lovely walks and an open air pool); the town centre (with its cathedral and many restaurants, shopping and bars) and the little branch line at St James train station for getting further afield. We've designed the house to make it a comfortable home to stay and relax in - we hope you enjoy staying here as much as we do.

We've refurbished the house to make it a comfortable home to stay and relax in with 2 double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a well equipped open plan L-shaped kitchen with dining and additional lounge area (lovely and airy under a glass roof and with bifold glass doors spanning the house) as well as an additional cosy lounge at the front.

Downstairs - Entrance hall with understairs coat and shoe area and washing machine; downstairs shower room and toilet; front lounge which is lovely to snuggle up in the evening (Loaf sofa, armchair and rocking chair, books and games). At the back of the house is a well equipped kitchen leading to a light and airy dining and further lounge area with glass roof and bifold glass doors so that you can enjoy the flowers and birds in the garden whatever the weather.

Upstairs - Two light and airy double bedrooms with comfy beds with pristine linen - one (smaller) bedroom looks over the garden and one to the front of the house - plenty of storage space for your belongings. Newly fitted bathroom with walk in shower, toilet, basin and cupboard, heated mirror and electric radiator. (Please note that both the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms are fitted with showers rather than baths)

Outside - Cute and very well stocked walled garden; lovely for sitting out in for an evening meal. There are many mature shrubs and trees around including silver birch, apple, hawthorne and Japanese acer), climbers (e.g. honeysuckle, clematis, ivy, jasmine), ferns, hostas etc. which creates a lovely green oasis in the centre of town and attracts a constant flow of birds. The garden table and fire pit are available for guest use. Please note that as we are in the St James’ area on the edge of the city centre parking in most of the street is restricted for residents’ use only. However there are a number of free and pay-for parking areas within a 10 minute walk - we can provide you with details of these.

Nearby - St James’ is home to a great mix of lively students (about 5 of the 40 houses on our street are students) and permanent residents served by a diverse range of great restaurants and food shops close by. In fact everything is on your doorstep here. Two excellent little Thai and Japanese restaurants at the top of our road and the St James’s train station (a little branch line that takes you to Topsham, Paignton etc) and St. James’s football ground within a 5 minute walk while Exeter town centre is just 10 minutes - check out the cathedral, varied shopping area, restaurants and coffees shops and bakeries.

Exeter has multiple shopping areas - including a host of charity shops and vintage shops. local makers and the big brands.

For a walk, run or swim the Hoopern Valley Park, Exeter university campus and an outdoor pool are all within a 10-15 minutes walk.

Around Exeter - Exeter is a great central base for quick access to fast roads to explore north and south Devon and even Cornwall - and if you don't have a car there are also good rail links to the coast.

There are several National Trust properties nearby, including the local Killerton (15 minutes drive), Hestacombe (50 minutes drive) and our favourite Colyton Fishacre (50 minutes drive) with its incredible gardens leading onto a stunning section of south west coastal path between Kingswear and Brixham with quiet coves to enjoy.

Dartmoor with its delightful villages and towns (try Ashburton and Lustleigh for starters) or Chagford with its 1930s Lido on the banks for the Teign are around 30 minutes drive).

Other easy day trips can take you up to the north or south coasts of Devon and Cornwall: Croyde Bay for surfing; the Lost Gardens of Heligon, the Eden Project, Charlestown, Boscastle and Port Isaac are all within about a 90 minute drive..

By train - The small branch line from St James' station 5 minutes walk up the road takes you down to the Estuary and coastal towns including Topsham (enjoy a meal watching the sunset by the estuary), Totnes and Teignmouth.

By water - Paddle board or kayak down the river from Exeter quay down to the Turf Locks pub; catch a boat from Topsham for an estuary cruise....
