The Neighborhood:
A pristine beach, drifting sand dunes, snug eateries tucked away on street corners, and a magnificent castle view everywhere you turn. These are just a few of Bamburgh’s coups, not to mention its coastal setting in the county's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
As the royal capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, spellbinding Bamburgh holds a history worth discovering. All the while, awe-inspiring Bamburgh Castle will be your backdrop, and you can wander down the main street, past Bamburgh's cafes and towards the village’s landmark red phone box for an especially staggering and scenic view.
Dominant and dramatic on its rocky plateau, Bamburgh Castle’s imposing presence along Northumberland’s coast makes for a magical walk along the beach. Enter the grounds of this iconic, medieval fortification, with impressive corridors, towering turrets and formidable fortresses. As you explore one of the most iconic castles in northern England, learn about the castle’s turbulent past, as well as discovering an array of events are constantly happening at the castle, such as Dragon Hunts, Ghost Tours and even Outdoor Cinema Screenings if you stick around after sunset.
The castle isn’t the only chunk of history that Bamburgh Village has to offer. The RNLI Grace Darling is a museum dedicated to Grace Horsley Darling, who participated in the rescue of nine men from a tragic shipwreck.
Another must see is Bamburgh Ossuary which is located in a crypt below St Aidan's church and is the final resting place of the bones of people from the 6th & 7th century.
Standing on Bamburgh Castle beach, looking out at the North Sea you can enjoy views of Holy Island and the Farne Islands.
If you’re looking for a cuppa between beach walks, a cluster of cafes line Bamburgh’s stone-front streets. Plus, the village offers high-end restaurants serving exquisite seafood for those wanting to be wined and dined.
For the golfers, Bamburgh Castle Golf Club is often called one of the most scenic golf courses in Britain with views of Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, the Cheviots and Bamburgh Castle.
