About this property
Little Egret - a cottage that sleeps 3 guests in 1 bedroom
Little Egret, a unique ground-floor retreat, is nestled in a terrace of former fishermen's houses in the village of Carsethorn. Its standout feature is the breathtaking terrace view that spans from the Nith Estuary to the Solway Firth, and extends southwards to the Lake District. The property also boasts easy access to Carsethorn Beach and is within walking distance to the historic Arbigland House with its 24 acres of gardens, which is well worth a visit!
Surrounded by a rich wildlife habitat, the area around Little Egret is a paradise for nature lovers. It's a key migratory route for thousands of Svalbard Barnacle Geese, who flock here to winter along the Solway. Just a 10-minute drive from the apartment, you'll find the RSPB Mersehead Reserve, offering public bird hides and endless sandy beach walks. For those with a four-legged family member, Southerness Beach, which is 4.5 miles away, is a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or an afternoon on the championship 18-hole links golf course; other golf courses are easily accessible throughout the area. Again, within a short drive, Mabie Forest has one of the stages of the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Network, long-distance footpaths and the Farm Park, an adventure centre for children of all ages. New Abbey, again within a short drive, is a delightful village where Sweetheart Abbey and the historic Corn Mill are open to the public on a seasonal basis.
The peaceful coastal village of Carsethorn is home to the popular Steamboat Inn. The pub is popular with diners, allowing guests to enjoy a meal while admiring the changing colours of the Nith and Solway. There is much to do and explore throughout the area, and it has strong connections to Robert Bruce, King of Scots, with numerous trails and sites throughout the region. Scotland's famous Baird, Rabbie Burns, with his home, Mausoleum, The Globe Inn, Burns Centre and Ellisland Farm located in and around Dumfries, as is Moat Brae, the birthplace of Peter Pan and former home of author J.M. Barrie which has been recently renovated to become the home of the National Centre for Children's Literature. The entire region of Dumfries & Galloway is a haven for outdoor activities, offering a refreshing blast of fresh air to rejuvenate your spirit.
The ground-floor apartment shares the attractive front garden with the owners next door. Their friendly dog welcomes other dogs and guests. Guests can enjoy the views from its picnic bench or across the road from the property is a beach garden with unrestricted sea views. The owner, Ailsa Black, is a renowned artist trained at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. Today, she works from an airy seaside studio close to the property. If guests would like a tour around the studio, Ailsa would happily provide this by pre-arrangement.
Little Egret is ready to welcome you with open arms. We accept bookings with either a Monday or Friday arrival with short breaks throughout the year.
