About this property
Rural retreat in Champagne Country with large pool - Friends & family friendly!
Eclance, in gaulois meaning a clearing in a wood; is situated on the border of the Champagne vineyards of the Côte des Bar region, the Park Naturel Regional of the Forest of the Orient and faming countryside. Situated on the edge of the village and facing the pretty church, our four gîtes comprising Les Hirondelles (The Swallows), Les Moineaux (The Sparrows), Les Tourterelles (The Turtledoves) and Les Chouettes (The Owls), are classed four stars and are set along a little street/courtyard. Our property is known as La Ferme des Tourterelles (Turtledove farm). Sleeping 22 -26 people, they provides a great way to holiday with friends and family. The set up gives you the opportunity to holiday together; as well as find space to relax and tranquility if that is what you are looking for.
The kitchens are fully equipped making it easy to cater for yourselves. The two largest gîtes where you can congregate have wood burners if you want to inject further ambience to your gatherings if needed. Eight of the eleven bedroom have their own ensuite bathrooms, with only two bedrooms needing to share a shower room and a wash room. If there is anything key you want to see whilst here on UK Freeview TV, the TV's are connected to satellite. Parking is available in the big stone barn at the end of the courtyard which keeps your cars cool in the hot summers and frost free in the winters.
The large outdoor heated pool and gardens with views onto rolling farm land and forests of Park naturel régional of the Forest of the Orient, will entice you outdoors to spend time taking advantage of the numerous terraces, sunbeds and benches to take in the view, and if feeling energetic, play boules, badminton or table tennis. BBQ's are available at your disposal as is the fire pit. The open night skies are perfect for stargazing and sighting shooting stars. Guests may also choose to socialise indoors and eat together, either downstairs in Les Tourterelles or alternatively, Les Chouettes. For young children, there is a little cabin, picnic bench and swings. Games are available both indoors and outdoors.
The high season generally starts from the 2nd - 3rd week of May by which time, the pool should be heated; finishing after the first week of September. Whilst we have a pool heating system, due to its size it takes a while to heat up, the speed of which much depends on the weather. Regardless, for those booking either side of the high season, you are welcome to use the pool though we can't predict that the pool will be up 26°C, our target.
The area is a paradise for wildlife being under a migratory route for cranes and many other birds such as nightingales, swallows and red kites. The flowers of the garden attract many butterflies so you do not need to go far to be embraced by nature!
The medieval town of Bar-sur-Aube is only 10 minutes drive with a number of supermarkets and boulangers. The beautiful city of Troyes is only 45 minutes drive, a must visit if you have time to spare to wander around the pedestrian roads looking at all the old wooden framed buildings and/or museums. The delights of the open, empty roads are a great attraction for cyclists as are the many tracks for those wanting to ramble. For the young and young at heart, Nigloland an amusement park set in a wooded valley is only 5 minutes away offering many rides. The first of three lakes is only 10 minutes away with guests bringing their motor boats to waterski or jet ski. Alternatively, relax and swim from the sandy beaches or lac Amance and lac Orient.
The connection to nature, the walks and the open roads for cycling/touring, makes this place a special haven. In addition, the property is well placed for water sports lovers, with water skiing and jet skiing only minutes away as well as kayaking along the River Aube.
For those living in towns or cities, being set beside a farm, this is a great place to discover the country life. Being close to the Burgundy region, some guests go off on day trips to explore the vineyards and towns of Chablis, Beaune and the Côte d'or, as well as the other Champagne producing regions.

About the host

James and I bought this property in near ruinous state in 2003. Since then with much love and enjoyment, we turned this old farmstead and its barns into four lovely holiday cottages, as well as renovating the old farmhouse for us. Exploiting James skills as a Chartered Builder and my love of gardening, we hope to have created a lovely place for you to stay and enjoy the surrounds.
Originally from the UK but much travelled, we delight in welcoming everyone, to share in what we believe is our paradise. This is an ideal place to tour; by car, motorbike or cycle, hence one of the reasons James with his love of old cars and open roads loves this area. My love of nature, in which we are immersed, along with the rolling landscape gives me much opportunity to go walking - another past-time that I like.
Whilst we live in the farmhouse, we aim to be discrete as we see this as your home. Of course you will see us from time to time as we need to manage the gardens and pool or whilst you see James tinkering with one of his cars.
Should you ever need advice, we are here for you. Likewise should there be an emergency, we are there to provide support if we can. I love cooking and I have tried to make sure the kitchens are well equipped, but if there is something extra you need, do not hesitate to come and see us to see if we can help you out.
When we bought this property, we also took on the tenancy of Alice who had lived here since she was 13 years old tending the dairy cattle. She lived in the small house opposite us (now a store), so we learnt all about the history of the farm. Our renovations confirmed her stories of the 1st & 2nd world wars. Our farmhouse housed poorly American soldiers during the 1st world war and a German Office was billeted here during the 2nd world war.

Why they chose this property
There are a multitude of reasons why we chose this area. There is much to offer being placed on the borders of the Champagne vineyards with their UNESCO heritage classification, So our love of wines has meant a continual exploration for good champagnes at reasonable prices. Being not too far away from Burgundy also gives us an opportunity to explore further afield. Eclance is also on the border of the Parc naturel régional de la forêt d'orient, with its three large lakes and beaches, I can delight in the many walks and wildlife. Since living here, we live with the sense of the changing seasons with cranes passing over, as well as Swallows and nightingales making their home here in the summer.
Both of us love the sense of history as seen in the architecture of the medieval towns and cities of Bar-sur-Aube and Troyes. Also the landscapes, buildings and legends surrounding the Templars which originated in the Aube. For me, history came alive in discovering the exploits of Napoleon Bonaparte, where he went to school in nearby Brienne-le-Château, and conducted various battles fought all around this area.
We hope we can help you discover the area by providing an introduction and guide to geocaching, with many caches to discover based on different themes. We also provide walking routes and cycle routes from here as well as all around.
Nigloland (slang for hedgehog), a charming amusement park is only 5 minutes drive, well hidden away from us in a wooded valley. Many guests who stay here for a week or two, buy a season ticket so they can come and go through the week as they wish.

What makes this property unique
By choosing to stay here at La Ferme des Tourterelles, groups of friends and extended families can pick the best of all worlds by being able to holiday together without being on top of each other. For those seeking moments of quiet or solitude, there is the space outdoors and your 'own home' to retreat to!
The pool at over 15 x 7 m, is larger than many hotel pools, giving you space to enjoy a swim, sunbath and enjoyment around the pool together.
Our group of cottages are all classed four stars by the Prefecture/Tourist Office reflecting the quality of our set up and the facilities/amenities available. Whilst this is the first year we have advertised the group of cottages on VRBO, many reviews are still available on TripAdvisor which has now stopped advertising holiday rentals. Our guests have appreciated our gîtes and set-up with virtually all, providing us five our to five stars in their reviews.
Many of our loyal French guests of extended families or groups, find our location useful as midpoints between Paris, the Alsace/Germany/Switzerland/Luxembourg & Belgium, Being situated between the A26 & A5 motorways, travelling here is made easy by car. Being approximately 4 hours drive from Calais, this also means many from the UK can travel to Eclance as their holiday destination in one day.
We hope you have a fabulous time here.
