About this property

Romantic, Quirky, Barn Retreat, Nestled in Nature with its very own waterfall.

Unwind and feel rejuvenated in our peaceful, cosy, rustic, quirky, spacious barn with its very own waterfall in the back garden. We've lovingly restored our 150 yr. old barn into a unique, characterful space and added lots of quirky features and specially mixed colours to calm, soothe and cut off form the stresses of everyday life. Whether you just want to unwind and batten down the hatches or maybe like us, you're creative and need time out to think or work on a project, you're sure to be inspired by the peace and quiet inside the barn. Or feel free to open up the balconette doors and absorb the soothing sound of the nearby waterfall and the huge range of birdsong. At dusk you'll love to hear the owls as they start squawking to each other!

The barn nestles in a gorgeous valley with stunning surroundings, on the edge of a quaint hamlet, on the Pennine Way, (AONB). Just 35mins from the M6 over the very scenic Hartside Pass, or an hour's beautiful drive from Scotch Corner, it makes for the perfect stopover or longer relaxing break.

Offering outstanding walking right on your doorstep, enriching clean air and an abundance of nature, including red squirrels scampering across the courtyard, it's the perfect base from which to explore this remote, beautiful part of Cumbria. What could be more special and stimulating than a good round walk straight from the door. There are plenty to choose from, such as the amazing Ashgill Force waterfall, that you can walk behind, without even getting wet :) After you amble home a different route to complete the round walk, you could close the shutters and prepare a lovely, cosy fire.

If you're looking for a special extra, a projector/dvd player+films is available to hire, to project films on to the big gable wall of the barn, a unique, cosy cinema experience to enhance your stay as the autumn nights draw in, nothing cozier with the wood burner fired up!

After all that at end of the day, you're sure to have a fine nights sleep in our king size bed on the cozy mezzanine, right under the stars, complete with100% cotton bed linens for maximum comfort.

If you're looking for somewhere to eat, a short drive 6 mile drive into Alston offers a good restaurant and a choice of characterful pubs with some good pub grub on the menu. If you need some essentials there is a handy, friendly local shop two mins.walk away. There's also a couple of small well stocked supermarkets in Alston if you prefer to cook something in the barn.

If you're looking for a special extra, a projector/dvd player+interesting selection of dvds, is available to hire, to project on to the big gable wall of the barn. It makes for a unique, cosy cinema experience to enhance your stay as the autumn nights draw in, nothing cosier when the wood burner is fired up!!

About the host

Host profile image
I'm an experimental musician/ film maker working with my wife to showcase our improvised music and films. When we're not busy with our artistic pursuits, we're currently involved with restoring the cottage and annexe barn on the other side of the flag-stone courtyard at Bridge End, incorporating traditional methods and hand mixed colours.

We are both extremely broad-minded creative types, with a left-field/green focussed outlook, who enjoy hiking on the local moorland and climbing in the Lake District, an hour's drive away.

We love to host and connect with like-minded, creative, nature loving souls who chime with the up-cycling, quirky ethos of the place.

Why they chose this property

We stumbled upon Alston Moor back in 2005 when looking for somewhere to stay within striking distance of the Lake District, without paying the exorbitant rates charged in that national park! We were immediately struck by the area's wild and raw beauty, away from the madding crowds of the Lakes. It seemed and indeed was the idyllic place to raise our two daughters, who had a ball wild swimming in the summer and sledging in the winter months. We started to draw inspiration from the surrounding area and have incorporated many of the natural aspects into our sound/visual art.

What makes this property unique

Our light filled, colour drenched barn is a truly delightful space to stay in and offers all the soothing qualities that make for a relaxing perfect break. If you're looking for a cosy place to unwind that's also a unique, arty haven then look no further. If you enjoy the ambience of the countryside, you'll love the sound the nearby waterfall and stunning birdsong, including owls squawking right outside at dusk, as well as curlews and lapwings up on the moor, 5 mins walk away. There are not just amazing, scenic walks straight from the barn door, there are little extras on offer, to enjoy in the evening, such as optional mood lighting for atmosphere and the wood burner that really adds a coziness to the space. Why not project a film on to the big gable wall of the barn? We have a projector, dvd player and dvd selection for hire, or you may have a film of your own to bring! With the bluetooth speakers either side of the sofa you can sit back and have your very own fab. cinema experience! If you just want to listen to music, don't forget your fav. playlist that you're welcome to crank up the volume (the walls of the barn and nearby stream/ river absorb the sound).
