For a historical day out, the picturesque village of Cartmel is known for its ancient priory and traditional sticky toffee pudding. Another fascinating site is Holker Hall and Gardens, a stately home set amidst beautifully manicured gardens, which welcomes visitors to explore its grand interiors and seasonal events. The coastal town of Ulverston, nearby, is famous for its lively festivals and for being the birthplace of Stan Laurel (of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy), with a museum dedicated to the iconic comedian.
