About a holiday in Charlestown...
Once a thriving working port, constructed to export copper and china clay, Charlestown is a beautifully preserved pretty harbour town with pastel fishermen's cottages lining the harbour and a nice range of places to eat, drink and shop. Charlestown also has its own small sandy beach, which is perfect for sun bathing and paddling. The beautiful harbour and surroundings retain much of their Georgian character with beautiful period properties sitting side by side with traditional stone fishermen's cottages and harbourside inns.
Further afield, no trip to Charlestown is complete without a visit to the Eden Project, the world’s largest indoor rainforest and famous ecological landmark. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, located in Pentewan less than five miles from Charlestown are a bloom-filled spectacle to behold. Spread across 200 acres of dog-friendly gardens and estate, visitors can roam woodland, farmland, jungle, productive gardens and pleasure grounds complete with historic paintings and National Collection of Camellias and Rhododendrons for a day out with an incredible back-to-nature difference.
Kids will also be kept entertained with farm animals in The Barn, seasonal walking trails and events, and inspired features such as The Hide, The Insect Hotel and The Coin Log.
Whether it’s summer or winter, a stint at the beach is a definite to-do on the list for anyone holidaying in Charlestown, and the stunning selection in and around the area ensures everyone from sand-loving landlubbers to water sports enthusiasts will relish some coastal downtime.
A short stroll west will take you to the beautiful and family-friendly Porthpean, the perfect place to soak up the sunshine or swim, windsurf and sail during the warmer months – or have a beach clean or walk in winter. The long two-mile stretch of Carlyon Bay fuses a trio of sandy beaches in St Austell Bay, giving plenty of room for couples and families alike. Whether extending your walk off the South West Coast Path or relishing some seaside fun during the summer, it’s another gem to seek out during your stay.
