Aloha. We would definitely love to come back to Poipu and stay at this location. We loved the beach decor, lania, comfortable beds, location to beaches, breeze and ocean sounds! The heritage trail to Shipwreck beach ( kids fave beach) and the bluffs runs beside the condo. We loved Mahaulepu Beach about 10 min drive away, for snorkelling, relaxing, shade and swimming. The best snorkel spot was between Gillins Beach and Mahaulepo. The walk on the cliffs to the left was spectacular.
Our family absolutely loved our stay here. It was a true highlight and favorite of our trip. The description was spot on. It was clean, spacious, and in an excellent location with unbeatable views . There were lots of little extras like beach chairs, towels, and an exceptional book with local tips that we totally used! No A/C wasn’t really an issue with the ocean breeze. The loft got a little hot one of the nights, but not unbearable. The only bummer was construction going on near us. Fortunately part of our trip was over the holiday and weekend, so it wasn’t during our whole stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed the location, convenience, and comfort of this property. We appreciated the availability of basic supplies for our stay. Being right on the Poipu Cliff trail was wonderful, and proximity to Poipu Beach amenities and restaurants was perfect. Lovely views from the condo, if a bit windy!
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. The condo is very nice, well appointed with beach towels, beach chairs, umbrella, and some snorkel gear. The pictures of the views are accurate. The ocean is right there. The pictures have just been brightened. It is worth noting that the condo does not have AC, which is accurate in the listing. And it was 75-85 the whole time. With all the windows open and fans on, it was tolerable. But there are a few hours during the day when it is indeed quite hot. We got used to it after the first couple of days. We also kept the windows closed during the hottest part of the day to keep the morning coolness in and that worked fairly well. The loft is actually quite spacious and a nice extra place to hang out at night when it’s less hot. The kitchen had most of what we needed but nothing extra. No ziplock bags, foil or anything like that. The complex seems nice and safe. My 5 year old enjoyed the pool. But not all guests followed the quiet hour rules. And since everyone has their windows open, you can hear everything. Management was super responsive. We had an issue with one of the fans and they came to fix it right away. The location is great for south shore activities. Overall, it was a lovely home away from home for our party of 5 (4 adults and one child).
Skip this property: mold, wind tunnel, and awful management
We booked the property last minute as friends had to back out and we didnt need a 5br house. We have visited Poipu 7 times and this was our worst experience.
The condo itself was ok. Its a 2br (the loft is unusable unless you are a rock climber at night). The location at the point in Poipu makes it incredibly windy, and the small outside patios were unusable as a result. The main view is blocked by another condo and it is impossible to see a sunset from inside the condo.
The condo surfaces were sticky upon arrival, so we had to use wipes on everything. The fan in the LR (and light) would not turn off, the dryer didnt work, electricity was out in one of the BRs and the smart TV wasnt hooked up to the internet. That's all annoying but no big deal. We had to deal with 3 separate visits, and they couldnt solve the fan ("no batteries on the island") or the electricity issue (more on this later).
What was a big deal was during a rainstorm at 930p, the leak above the pillow in the primary bedroom and the water pulsing inside two walls during rain, creating bulges under the paint (I have photos). We had to move out of that bedroom. We called the management company who provided the following options
1. pull the mattress onto the floor and ignore the leak (there was no room to do that)
2. sleep in the loft (with a vertical 8' ladder and no access to a bathroom).
3. sleep downstairs on the couch (note that the fan and light was on, permanently, as they could not fix the remote or turn it off).
The next day, management called back, told us that the maintenance supervisor was unavailable, but would it be ok to send someone over who "looked rough and unprofessional and I dont know him but he should be ok". I told them to start on the roof and call us back. They never did. They offered us nothing, not even an apology.
I love Kauai and Poipu and we will be back next December, but would never stay at Makahuena or any property associated wth Alekona Kauai. They are incompetent and have no consideration for guests. I have texts and photos documenting all of this.
We had a great time in Kauai. The condo in Poipu was perfect for our trip. Watching the sunrise from the balcony was a perfect way to begin each day. We loved the walking trail along the coastline. And the living room / kitchen setup led to nice leisurely evenings unwinding as we listened to the waves. We'd definitely recommend staying at this condo!
large remodeled unit perfectly frames the Pacific Ocean
We were really pleased w/ the unit and its amenities and location. Jessica, the office manager was on top of any question/request I had. We were impressed w/ the updates and spaciousness and having a corner deck on the top floor.
I would just recommend a few things:
the down spouts need to be fixed
add more spices/sugar/basics
Add a wire whisk, glass cover for glass baking dish & hot pads
Add sandwich bags/saran wrap and foil.
We enjoyed the pool/BBQ and walking location to the Grand Hyatt, Shipwreck Beach and Poipu Beach.
Condo was very clean and in a great location. Beds were very comfortable as well. Loved the balcony overlooking the ocean. I might recommend getting some more kitchen utensils. There was only one melted spatula, for example. I like to cook, so a stocked kitchen is important to me. The management team was very responsive and kind with check-in and any questions we had. I would stay here again.
Excellent location and wonderful property! The manager was very helpful in providing recommendations prior to our arrival. Also flexible with requests when we were there in Kauai. I would definitely stay there again. If you are staying in the summer just be mindful there is no air conditioning so you will have to rely on fans. Overall excellent rental property and perfect for our family (4 adults and 2 kids).
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. Its location was perfect for our preferences, among other factors - a) full ocean view from our balcony, living area and master BR, b) proximity to good restaurants, c) immediate access to exceptional ocean front trails, d) a well laid out kitchen, e) full sized washer & dryer (for which washing pods and fabric softener were provided, f) Samsung SMART TV with full cable services ensuring a broad array of entertainment options incl access to our personal subscription services (Netflix, Amazon Prime), g) quiet unit, h) virtual equidistant from northern & eastern shore attractions and southern & western island attractions, and i) less than a half hour from the airport.
Caveats for this unit: a) for the elderly or infirm (or even if you’re “herding cats” with a passel of little kids and all their gear), this unit is a bit of a hike from the parking lot, b) in that same vein, you’ll have to navigate at least three flights of stairs (totaling about two dozen stairs) to get to the unit, c) the unit has no air conditioning (the ventilation was ok during our January stay, but the humidity made even the cooler days less comfortable), and d) the unit faces south southeast and during our stay it took a strong beating from near gale force winds bringing surf spray from the nearby ocean against the windows as well as blowing rains into the unit with the living room sliders open.
We rented this condo for a family holiday gathering of five adults, and it was suited to that purpose. The fifth adult needed to be agile to use the sturdy fixed ladder (with handrails) up to the loft with a queen bed, but she found it comfortable and relatively private once she was up there, and she enjoyed the views from the windows. As with all upper-floor units at the Makahuena, there are stairs involved in getting into the unit, and more stairs involved in getting to the bedrooms. The unit was very clean and had been attractively renovated. It came equipped with everything needed for a week’s stay, where we dined in on three evenings, mornings and random lunches. The only things missing were placemats and napkins. In another review of the unit, there was some criticism of the view's being inaccurately represented. We thought that review off the mark. The open view from the table on the lanai was panoramic. From there, you could see the surf crashing on the near-by Point, and could see the whole coastline over to the bluff at the far end of the Hyatt beach. The surf could easily be heard from the master bedroom window. There are units at the Makahuena that are even closer to the ocean, but frankly on the night that we experienced near-hurricane conditions, we were just as glad we were not in one of those units. On that stormy night, there were some roof leaks in the unit, which did not cause us serious inconvenience. Repairmen came as soon as we were checking out, and this will probably not be a problem in the future.
Love Poipu, but we will avoid this unit and property manager next time we visit.
My wife and I chose this condo for an 8-night stay on Kauai because we like Poipu, the photos showed the unit had been remodeled, the complex had a private swimming pool and the close proximity to the ocean. Since I would be using our rental car each day for work an hour away, the complex’s private pool just steps from the condo was a key feature for my wife. Unfortunately, one week after we had paid in full for the rental, the rental management firm informed us that the pool would not be available during our stay due to scheduled maintenance and so they had arranged for our use of the pool at the Poipu Beach Athletic Club over a mile from the condo and a half-mile from the beach. I told the management firm we were disappointed and aggravated, but after 2 days of hearing nothing back from them, I asked if they had a bicycle my wife might use. The response was no, but you can rent one in the area. The other significant problem we had with the rental was the refrigerator not working properly, so our food spoiled in the first 24 hours. After 2 days without a refrigerator, a filthy, banged up one showed up in the living room for the next couple days of use before the one in the photos was repaired. With two days left to our stay, a message was left on my phone that 20% of our rental fee was to be refunded to us for our troubles. All in all, I would say the unit shows well in the photos obviously taken right after the remodeling, but whoever is cleaning the unit now isn’t maintaining that appearance or the functionality of the unit. A major feature I overlooked when renting is that the unit doesn’t have air conditioning (yes, there are other units in the same building that do have AC), so the windows need to be left open or the place would be sweltering. One of Kauai’s driving rains will leave you to either flood the place or sit in a hot box. Other aggravations: the sliding door screens and tracks are so corroded you can hardly move them or close them and the bugs that hatched one night came right through the screens and covered the place. The bathroom sink was clogged, although someone took care of it on the same day I called. The TV in the living room doesn’t operate properly. The clothes washing machine doesn’t operate properly. And as other reviewers have mentioned – your ocean view is over the roof of the building on the oceanfront and you’ve got a long haul from your car & several flights of stairs when you bring in your luggage and groceries.

5 Star Customer Service, Super Clean and Nice Condo, NOT OCEAN FRONT
The team at Alekona Kauai were super helpful and communicative! Cathy, Allison, and Michael reached out as soon as we made our reservation as well as days before and during our trip to see if we had any questions or needed help with anything. So great!
The condo is very clean, nice, and modern. I swear the ocean breeze that comes through the sliding door has healing powers. It's a great location that is close to good food, great beaches and other activities. There are beach towels, chairs, kids' snorkel gear, and other beach stuff in the laundry room for guests to use. Nice touch!
The bedroom set up was perfect for me, my wife, and our two teen daughters. The kitchen was well stocked with most of what we needed on the rare occasions we cooked at home (usually breakfast).
Our only complaint was that this condo was described as "ocean front". It is not. There's another condo unit between this one and the ocean. The pictures from the living room and bedrooms make it look like there are unobstructed views of the ocean. If the photos in the bedrooms were taken at eye level, you would see you are looking over rooftops to see the ocean and you actually can't see the shoreline. It is a small but important detail.
We did A LOT of research before booking our trip. Having an ocean front condo with unobstructed views of the beach and ocean was very important to us. This trip was a big celebration and we spared no expense. When we walked into this condo, we were deeply disappointed - not because it's not a nice place, but because we had an expectation of being right on the water with nothing between us and the shoreline. We actually spent our first few hours in Kauai trying to find a different place - and Allison helped us - but there was nothing available that met our needs. So our stay definitely got off on the wrong foot.
If you understand that you won't have unobstructed ocean views going into renting this place, you won't be disappointed. It's very nice and the rental team is top notch. We will probably rent one of their other properties the next time we come.
