Town: The pretty village of Penycae, set at the foothills of the Ruabon Mountains in North Wales, lies a couple of miles west of Ruabon and just over six miles from Llangollen. With two thriving village pubs, a well-stocked convenience store and a takeaway restaurant, there’s plenty on offer. The nearest town is Ruabon, a community close to the English/Welsh border, and this area of unspoilt natural beauty is ideal for enjoying the attractions of both countries. The Eisteddfod town of Llangollen, with its shops, eateries, railway and watersports, is only a few miles down the road, whilst the wonderful landscapes of the Snowdonia National Park, Llyn Peninsula and Isle of Anglesey can all be easily reached by car, with their myriad of attractions and pretty sights. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is just a couple of miles away, whilst Pystyll Rhaeadr, one of the Seven Wonders of Wales, is easily accessed through the scenic Ceiriog Valley. Head across the border to explore Chester, with its Roman walls and Medieval 'Rows’, renowned zoo, riverboat trips and excellent shopping. Take a day trip to Liverpool or Manchester, or explore Shropshire, including the timber-framed buildings of Shrewsbury or Ludlow. Numerous National Trust properties such as Chirk Castle, Erddig, Attingham Park, Penrhyn and Croft Castle can also be enjoyed or why not simply lace up your walking boots and take in the spectacular scenery this area offers by foot? A fantastic village base for a varied break in beautiful North Wales.
