About this property

Stunning 7 Bedroom Oceanfront Victorian Home and Barns On 22 Private Acres

Switzer Farm of Westport is the most beautiful place on the Mendocino Coast and perhaps in all of Northern California. The fully restored Victorian farmhouse sits atop 22 secluded acres directly overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It will comfortably accommodate several families traveling together with children. The property is located 35 minutes North of Mendocino and just South of the historic village of Westport.

The home is completely private, situated hundreds of yards from its nearest neighbor. It is further shielded by forested lands to the North, East and West, while enjoying uninterrupted access to and views of the wild Pacific Ocean to the West. Because the entire property is West of Highway 1, there is nothing between the house and the ocean but our own very private meadow and headlands. There are majestic views of the Pacific from every West-side room, upstairs and down, and even from half the East-side rooms. To top it off, there is a beautiful covered veranda spanning the entire West side of the house -- perfect for morning coffee or a sunset family dinner.

The house is very flexible in terms of sleeping accommodations. There are beds and traditional bedrooms to sleep 13 comfortably. There are 3 additional rooms with either queen sofa beds or queen self-inflating air mattresses. Finally, two of the traditional bedrooms have both a traditional queen/full bed and a queen sofa bed. Thus, depending on the makeup of the group, the house can sleep up to 25. The room/bed configurations are as follows:

Bedroom One: 1 queen bed
Bedroom Two: 1 full bed and 1 queen sofabed
Bedroom Three: 1 full bed and 1 queen sofabed
Bedroom Four: 1 queen bed
Bedroom Five: 2 twin beds
Bedroom Six: 1 twin bed
Bedroom Seven: 1 full bed
Living Room: 1 queen sofabed
Library: 1 queen sofabed
Finished Attic/Playroom: 2 self-inflating queen air mattresses

There is a gourmet kitchen with top of the line appliances, a walk-in pantry and laundry room. There are 4 bathrooms, 2 of which have sweeping ocean views. The tables in the dining room and kitchen will seat a total of 20 people. In addition to the main house, there are 2 historic barns and a garden shed, and they too have unimpeded views of the ocean.

The house is named for its original owners, the Switzer family, who built the house in 1884 and farmed the land from the 1870's until 1904, when they sold the property to the Fee family.

Rental of Switzer Farm of Westport for weddings and for any events with more than 19 adult guests entails different policies and pricing, and may not be booked through VRBO. Please see our website: [blocked by VRBO but named after name of house.] and contact the owners through the website.

This is our "forever" home, and we invite you to enjoy it as much as we do.

Thanksgiving 2019

Beautiful place and lots of room for the family. Weather was an issue while we were there but to be expected this time of year. There were 15 adults and 6 children under age 7 and everyone loved it and had a great time.

Jewel of the North Coast

The Switzer farm estate is a dream location for large families/groups to gather & enjoy each other, the surrounding area & the property. It is full of history & impeccably restores, so even though it is an old home it has all the amenities you need. Our family of 16 all had our own beds & ate meals at one table (linking the kitchen/dining rm tables & had privacy. To be able to hang out under one roof, play games on the expansive lawn, walk along the bluffs, sit on the deck & visit local beaches & towns made our stay exceed all expectations of a family gathering. We will definitely want to return-so many wonderful memories. Thank you to our host who answered every question timely & provided information to make our stay easy. Best trip ever!!!

Gorgeous Property, Gracious Host

This property did not disappoint! The house is amazing to explore with its variety of antique furniture, decor and seemingly endless number of rooms. Gary was also a very accommodating host, as we needed to move our booking date with the fires that broke out in November (note that the fires were not close to the property, but the air quality was bad enough with just the smoke). We had many questions beforehand and Gary always responded quickly. Dolores, their house cleaner, was also very welcoming. Multiple people in our group expressed interest in renting this property again in the future.

Property was excellent, Great views and very very understanding owner

We had a wonderful friends and family trip except for 3 hours on beach nearby and lunch we spent lot of time on property, enjoyed day, night views sunset, moonlight wonderful experience. My son 3.5 years old was so in love with this vacation that when it was time to say good bye he started crying I want to stay by the beach. we enjoyed playing games on lawn, sitting on deck and watching sunset, cooking together with friends and family. Wonderful experience. Thanks Gary for being such a lovely host. Just reserved one star as there is scope for improving kitchen utensils a bit. other than that no complains.

Wonderful getaway

Beautiful house + amazing view + stunning grounds + top notch kitchen + complete privacy = wonderful experience. Our family had a delightful time at Switzer Farm and we did not want to leave. Many of us are already talking about coming back. Gary was a pleasure to work with and his tips about what to do in the area was very helpful.

Fabulous office retreat!

Twelve of us spent a long weekend at the Switzer Farm house and loved it! Who knew that the northern California coast could be so warm and sunny? The front deck looks over the garden, open field and the ocean and was where we spent the most time. We even saw a whale swim up and down near the shore. The nearby town of Westport is a short walk away, has a beach and is welcoming and friendly. The house was very comfortable, with a large kitchen and dining areas. We really want to return some day!

Stunning view and lots of room

Switzer Farm was an amazing place to celebrate my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. The house was easily able to accommodate our large family, with many spaces to sleep and large rooms to gather. The kitchen was so thoughtfully stocked with items you might need. My family was in awe of all the unique details found throughout the house. The veranda overlooking the property and the ocean was such a beautiful relaxing spot. Gary went above and beyond to make sure that we had everything we needed to make this weekend one to remember.

The best view from a rental house we can have

We have been in this place for 3 nights including 3 kids and 15 adults and had an exceptional time spent for those days. 1st the view from the house was excellent, we enjoyed thoroughly from deer roaming in the garden in the morning and sun setting at the end of the sea view was just mind blowing. The room had sufficient for us and everyone has got bed to sleep with ample bed cover, comforter , pillows and bath towels. Dining area was huge, with store room and all the utensils in the kitchen including microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator. dish washer all are equally in very good condition and served well for our needs. The char coal grill was set outside and we had an exceptional BBQ grill for all of us. The lawn was equally good for our kids to play around. The only issue someone else can have if they travel with more than 4 cars, the parking spaces are limited and if you have more than 4 cars then need to park on the road side on high way 1. We had an excellent time spent in this house and I highly recommend for others to go for this.

Beautiful retreat

Switzer farm is as amazing estate with a perfectly remodeled turn of the century home. I've never stayed in such a exquisitely refinished home that managed to capture all the details of another century with the added comforts of a gorgeous kitchen and luxurious bathrooms. It was such a treat to stay in this Northern California coastal home and discover the quaint town of Westport with beautiful bluffs and a quiet beach. We were a gathering of 12 women and were comfortably able to fit around the dining room table and cooked lovely meals together using their amazing cookware and knives. We all loved our time here and hope to find more opportunities to rent this house in the future!

The house, the views, the grounds, were so relaxing & inviting. The restored vintage of the house was delightful. The mix of modern & antique kitchen made it very useful & attractive. Beds were very comfortable. We hope to stay again sometime.

This house feels like you’ve gone back in time!

First of all, I would like to Thank the owner of the property, Gary. He was was very accommodating to all our questions and request, we asked of him. We traveled with my family of 18 people to celebrate my mother’s 80 birthday, extravaganza! The house was a total hit, by providing us the interior as well as exterior space to keep my family very busy with activities. The house has been restored to its original time period, but with much modern amenities. The kitchen is very well stocked with just about everything you need to make a gourmet sit down dinner for 18 + people. There is one bathroom downstairs and spacious enough for a wheel chair. The bedrooms upstairs are very comfortable and two have a incredible view of the ocean. The balance of the other bedrooms face highway one. The back yard has a great deck , that can be used from dining to dancing. My mother and the rest of the family had a great time and I would not hesitate to visit this home again.

Beautiful Historic Home in need of some Upgraded amenities

We had a lovely family-friendly getaway with friends to Westport. This historic home has been half renovated with modern amenities and can sleep a large number of people. The property and views are STUNNING and it is a short 5/10 min walk to the town center of Westport. The kitchen and common rooms were very user-friendly and had some fantastic vintage furnishings and decor that clearly had been collected over time. That said, the room and bathroom configuration proved a little tricky for our needs. While listed as an 8 bedroom, it is really a 7 bedroom, with two overflow sleep rooms (one in the attic and one is a library). One of the 7 bedrooms is a tiny room with only a twin bed. 4 of the bedrooms share a small 3/4 bathroom with no tub (stall shower only). 2 of the bedrooms are master suites with en suite baths and ocean views, and 1 bedroom is on the main level with a bathroom next door that also serves at the common floor bathroom off of the kitchen and dining room. Several bedrooms and bathrooms lack any window treatments (or bath towels are used in place of a curtain) and many of the pillows, mattresses and bedding were lumpy, stained and uncomfortable. At this price point per night, we expected window coverings, hand towels available in the bathrooms, unstained sheets and pillows that did not feel like you were sleeping on a pile of balls of socks in a bag. The property had just done some landscaping work and the exterior smelled of manure, so it was difficult to enjoy the outdoor amenities like the back patio with breathtaking views due to the intense smell. We would return to this property but would bring our own pillows and hope that the owner installs some curtains and replaces the sheets.

About the host

Hosted by Gary Weiss

Host profile image
We are a family of 5: Michiko, Gary, and our kids, Maia, Natasha and Kenzo. Now that our kids have grown up, Michiko and Gary spend about 4-5 days a week in San Francisco, and the rest of our time in Westport. We love Westport and the Mendocino Coast. We hope you enjoy our place as much as we do!

Why they chose this property

Gary loves this house so much that he quit his job of 32 years as a lawyer to pursue his true dream job: restoring this house to its former glory. We had been visiting the Mendocino coast for 30+ years and always hoped to spend more time here. Gary is a passionate student of Victorian architecture and has been collecting 19th century light fixtures, bath tubs, sinks, toilets, hardware and other architectural elements for 30+ years -- storing them in our basement while waiting to use them in the restoration of a great house. This was the one! From 2015-2017, we restored the house with the idea of returning it to the same condition it had been in when it was first built in 1884. We are proud of our work, and hope you enjoy it too.
