Wonderful house! Close to everything and so spacious for hanging out too. We loved the decks.

This property is beautiful! The house is well kept and super roomy. The beds were comfy. The kitchen was well equipped. It's a perfect location for cycling the Michelson Trail and visiting Custer State Park. We hated to leave!

Wonderful house

The house has everything we needed for our family. We cooked every day and the kitchen had all the equipment we needed. Also used the Blackstone on the deck. We loved seeing and hearing the train. Would stay there again for sure.

Our trip

Wonderful house and fantastic location with a picture perfect view overlooking the 1880 train. Plenty of room for kids. Hill city is also welcoming with a good variety of shops and dining choices.

South Dakota tour

This property worked well for our first visit to South Dakota and all of its attractions. The location was convenient to reach the national parks, Custer state park, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the 1880's train which is right next door. The property is spacious and the owner was helpful in providing chairs to take to the buffalo roundup so that we did not have to pack and bring them. We appreciated the proximity to Main Street Hill City.

Family vacation

Very nice place in a quite area to relax. We spent time on the front porch watching the deer , and train come and go. We spent time in the back sunroom playing games as a family. The house has plenty of space for everyone. The home is centerly located to travel in any direction to various daily outings.

Great House and Location to See Black Hills

The house was in a great location - it is less than an hour from Custer, Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood, Wineries, etc,. Within walking distance of main area of Hill City, but far enough away to be quiet. The house was very nice and better than the pictures portray. Kitchen was well stocked, beds were comfortable, and many supplies were provided. We spent much of our time on the front porch and front picnic table overlooking downtown, the train station, and the many deer that happen by. We would definitely stay here again.

Hill city

Fabulous location to everything. Condition of the property was run down, poor linens, bedding & cobwebs galore. Very well outfitted for a wonderful stay if it was cleaned. Door frames coated with dirt & webs & door screens all poorly functioning. Location is the trump card!

Black Hills vacation

Kitchen well stock. We loved the picnic table in front to watch the trains. The grill was great, we ate supper every night using the grill. The girls loved watching the deer. Enough towels. We did not turn on any TVs in the evening with too much to do in the area the girls were tired. Thank you Linda for sharing your home

Black Hills Visit September 2024

This property is a great spot if looking for a central location to activities in the Black Hills. A group of us were out there for the Buffalo Roundup and Volksmarch at the Crazy Horse memorial. The 1880 Train is just below the property and enjoyed hearing the train pulling into the station. I recommend a round trip 1880 train ride which is a beautiful ride from Hill City to Keystone. This property was very roomy with enough of bedrooms and loft for the 4 of us in our group and 2 bathrooms, which was nice. Very nice kitchen with all the utensils with drip and KCup coffee makers. The living room area is comfortable and welcoming after a long day of activities and sight-seeing. The only negative I have for the property is a better job on dusting underneath furniture and ceiling fans in the upper bedrooms needed a cleaning. They were caked with dust. Aside from this, over-all a great place which I would recommend.

Would recommend

We had excellent communication with the property manager before and during our stay. They took care of issues as they could and communicated with us when workers would come to make repairs, only allowing them in with our permission. There were plenty of places to sleep, plenty of space with the added sun room, and plenty to do. We saw deer on the property, and could watch the 1880 train (which we HIGHLY suggest) daily from the porch. The griddle style grill outside was all we needed for pancakes, burgers, eggs, and sausage. There are stores and restaurants within walking distance, and the Mickelson trail is just down the hill across the highway. We would stay here if we ever vacation in Hill City again.

4/10 Poor

Eric J., CARVER

Needs some new beds

The AC kept the main level cool but very hot upstairs. The beds were very uncomfortable - especially the master. Multiple nights I spent part of the night on the floor. You got to reinvest and get some decent beds. Master bath has a neo-angle shower with a shower curtain (no glass) and the curtain was nasty and always rubbing on you. FYI - it was obvious that water is leaking from that shower and visible on main level. Kitchen faucet is barely attached to the sink. Old school TV's in unit. House needs some work. I have rented many homes from various sites. This is the only one I have rented that did not seem like it was worth the price. House was fair and location was fine, but not worth the premium price. More pics should be added to the site so people know what they are getting.

About the host

Host profile image
Our family bought this house after Hurricane Katrina sent us north for a couple of years. We loved it, and decided to keep it for summers. We hope to someday move here permanently.

Why they chose this property

Proximity to downtown Hill City, but still feels woodsy.
We love the burgeoning arts scene in Hill City, as well as the small town feel. Swimming in the lakes, fishing, hiking and biking the trails are favorite summer past times.

What makes this property unique

This home has a great view of downtown, and yet deer walk by the window in the early morning and evening. We love the open great room, with the catwalk crossing overhead. We love that it is comfortable both for adults and children. The fireplace when it is cool/cold is lovely.
