Newport, OR. Captain’s Landing rental

Close to beach and Newport attractions. Rental was well-appointed with most of the kitchen items that were needed for cooking. We could have used one more bedroom due to the number of single people in our group, but we made what was available work for our group of 9. Grocery stores were close as well as restaurants.

Birthdays and baptism

Celebrated family birthdays and ocean baptism from this house. House is in great location, close to beach restaurants and shops. Multi-levels made it easy to spread out and also come together on top floor to watch ocean and open kitchen/living room area. Game room was fun to discover hidden away!

Refreshing stay

Just to make clear we didn’t need to talk the property owner so not sure below I should rate them. A 1 star just means we didn’t have any need. But our stay was wonderful. The house is wonderful for being able to separate and have some space between family members. We had 2 littles who needed naps and so the ground floor level was perfect for them and their parents. And when we all wanted to be together the first level floor with Kitchen was adaptable for that.

Great house, great hosts

This house is as described--great layout for a multi-family stay--everyone can be together but it's also easy to section off floors if that's the mood. Short walk to the beach. Park access. Highly recommend.

Cool Place In A Great Location!

We were a party of 4 and could have easily brought 4 more, with all the rooms and space available! Lauri was very accommodating and easy to reach on the phone! This place is very cool, and we would definitely love to come back.

It was wonderful

The house is beautiful. After a rough check in everything was fabulous. We had all 4 levels and each family was able to retreat to their own space when needed. Gathering on the main level. The beach was a quick walk as was restaurants and shops. Loved our stay and will definitely be back!

Wonder place to stay

Our family of seven adults and four young children loved this place. With the variety of bedrooms and bathrooms, living room/kitchen and three decks it gave us a wonderful place to gather either all together or in smaller locations, (the decks). Has a great view and we loved being across from the park and close to Nye Beach.

no hot tub

The one priority for renting a house on the coast was the hot tub. We rented an extra night (Sunday) so my husband and I could enjoy the hot tub after our family left. The hot tub went to economy mode on Sunday. We figured that out Sunday afternoon. We changed the settings but the hot tub never got up to temperature before we left. We called property management/booking agent. We felt bad about calling on Easter but again paid for an extra night just so we could use the hot tub.

Interesting property

Property is fun, with various levels available and lots of stairs Great location for walking to beach and town Seating for more than 5 or 6 in one room would need tricky. Had trouble getting hot tub to function properly, which could have been partial operator error. Details on cleaning could be addressed (ie. Grimy areas around the handles in kitchen)

Not up to standards.

The location on the coast is nice. But the place was not good and not as advertised. Multiple Appliances didn’t work. The dishwasher didn’t work and it had soap in it from previous user so I assume it’s been broken for some time. The washing machines both gave us trouble and never worked. None of the windows have screens so we couldn’t keep the windows open in the room we had reserved for our kids (both young and curious). This is a pretty bad safety issue for families with young kids. Chairs were really uncomfortable. One kitchen table chair was so uncomfortable it was difficult to get through breakfast without pain. Location is nice and close to kid’s park, beach and local shops.

RENTERS BEWARE of this owner and VRBO/HomeAway

The property owner treated us like common criminals after we rented her house in Newport, Oregon. She claimed we damaged a door, but did not even ask if we did, which WE DID NOT. She then told us the cost to fix the damage, coincidentally enough, was exactly our entire DEPOSIT so VRBO gave it to her that and was that. The owners they have four other properties in Oregon, be careful. The owner's first e-mail to us was: The door in the game room, connecting the unit you rented to the neighboring unit, was kicked in. This is breaking and entering, trespass, and criminal vandalism. Unfortunately I must now file a police report as well as charge your security deposit. I cannot imagine who could do this to someone else’s home, and am beyond disappointed. I will need to provide the police with your name as the responsible guest, but if you were unaware of this, you may wish to identify the responsible member(s) of your party as soon as possible. I will email you pictures of the damage." Important to note there was no walk through when we left. The owner was absolutely not willing to even consider the idea that someone else that has access to the property (she was out of the country during our stay so she relied on second hand information someone gave her) could have possibly done the damage and simply placed the blame on the tenants. My wife and I rented the house so we could take our children, their spouses and kids to visit my wife's aging mother in Newport. We are all professional, respectful and honest people who also own rental property. We had the code to open all doors so there was no reason to break in as she accused us. Let me reiterate that if we would have caused the damage, we would be the first to acknowledge it and pay for it. It is not the money, it's the absolute conviction without even a discussion by both the owner and VRBO/HomeAway. The second problem is with VRBO and their corporate owner HomeAway. I've contacted them four times and each time they say they'll get back to us within 24-48 hours It has now been 13 days since we first contacted them and NOTHING. In all our reaching out to them, they have never asked us for our version of events.

Not What We Expected and Paid For

This property is in a nice neighborhood close to the beach (though the walk down the beach bluff could be a trial for the mobility-challenged). The house itself is arrayed over four floors (when counting the basement level); potentially another issue for those with stair-based problems. When we arrived we were disappointed with the overflowing outside trash can, broken door on the top floor and low level of window cleanliness. Had the foregoing been the only problems we would’ve spent our time at this site and left without comment. However, our primary problem is the less than accurate descriptions of this site in the information we received from VRBO: despite what VRBO says, there is no garage parking, the windows are not permanently fixed to prevent a child from tumbling out them, and this site is not adequate for 14 adults. By our count, perhaps 10 can sleep onsite with some comfort (8 can without question, but any more is really a point subject to debate). (Note, after departing, we were told that the site had an AerBed, which could accommodate two adults.) All told, the location is good for beach activities and the building itself is fine enough for a party of 8 - 10, but most definitely not for 14. Finally, any party with small children need to be prepared to watch the children anytime they approach an open window. Considering the high cost our experience was underwhelming to say the least. We are now reconsidering any future rentals with VRBO.

Great group space.

Our vacation here was excellent. Our group of 13 had plenty of room to hang out in for gaming, movies, and socializing, and there were still plenty of quiet corners for folks to take a break in. With the beach and restaurant scene just blocks away, getting out was just as fun as staying in. The available TVs and appliances are all recent and well-maintained. The available games and amenities like the hot tub and grill were excellent perks. And the hidden game room was a favorite. My only qualm is the two fold-down futon-style sofas. They're a bit small to justify listing as sleeping 2 people. 2 kids would fit great, but 2 adults on each was a stretch. But we made it without any major morning aches and pains and really, really loved our stay.

We are former San Diegans who now live in Oregon, and love to travel with our Rottweilers.

Roy is a physician, and Lauri's background is in commercial real estate, so vacation rentals started as a sideline.

We bought our first vacation rental as a weekend getaway with our dogs, and loved it so much we decided to open it to other dog-loving travelers who also wanted a getaway.

The home was soon booked up, a movie was filmed on-site, and many guests returned on a regular basis to enjoy the home we loved so much.

Since then, we have stayed in many vacation rentals, with and without our dogs, and have used our stays to develop best practices to welcome our guests on their vacations.

Our passion is to create amazing homes that our guests will love: An amazing location, unique and stylish decor, superb comfort, a calming ambiance, and fun for the whole group.

From anniversaries to family reunions, milestone birthdays, and even times when families are gathering to say goodbye to a loved one, it is our honor and privilege to help our guests with their vacation accommodations.

Our homes reflect all of the happy vibes from family reunions and good times that our guests have enjoyed.

The great feedback from our guests drives our passion to create the best experience possible for them, so we are constantly updating and improving our homes to provide a great experience for our guests.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Why they chose this property

We love Nye Beach. It is such a unique and popular vacation destination, yet still rings true with its own Nye Beach vibe.

We bought this property at auction in early 2017. The first floor (now The Landing) was a defunct beauty salon, and the top three floors had been used as a personal residence. Every wall and ceiling was painted in different hues of red. purple, green, mustard yellow, etc., and thick brown shag carpet abounded.

There was also a maroon jetted tub and matching toilet :0

We began a total renovation, and I spent the first half of 2017 working on the house. Some design element firsts for me were luxe cork flooring in the master, brick veneer walls in The Landing and the Secret Game Room, stainless steel and butcher block counters, pickling and installing a pallet wood accent face on the kitchen island (thanks to the local hardware company for letting me scrounge), and my new favorite, Typhoon Green granite in a leather finish with broken edges.

I bought a gigantic flamethrower to do the burnt cedar boards in The Landing and the Secret Game Room, and was terrified when the first flames shot out 8 feet! I kept going (although in tears) because I thought the guys wouldn't wimp out so I couldn't either. It turned out my contractor burnt all of the hair off of one of his hands when he used it. We were both OK, and I think the burnt cedar walls turned out great.

The two most fun things about this renovation were turning an absolute eyesore front porch into an elegant enclosed sunroom with a spa, and the Secret Game Room!

Without giving too much away, I came across a Murphy Door (a door disguised as a bookshelf) and had an AHA moment. My husband Roy and I had entirely too much fun designing this hidden room, with a wet bar, 100" screen, foosball table, etc., and I have to ask guests to let me know if they don't find it in the first day or so, because a couple of guests never did. It is too much fun to miss!

What makes this property unique

I was working too hard on the house to really enjoy its proximity to EVERYTHING in Nye Beach until it was done, but now we are really loving this location!

It is across the street from the Performing Arts Center. Recently, my son and I enjoyed a show, with a live orchestra, at the PAC and had an amazing time. I loved how the entire cast lined up on either side to greet us as we left.

We walked across the street from there to The Pacific Cafe and had an excellent dinner of fresh seafood and a beautiful view of the ocean.

In the morning, a quick walk down the street takes you to a french bakery that would stand its ground in Portland or New York, and in the afternoon you can go wine tasting, eat in numerous great restaurants, and hit a number of great shops and used bookstores in a five-minute walk.

The layout of the villa is very conducive to large groups. One lucky couple will enjoy the 800 SF master on its own floor, but the other bedrooms are also amazing. Parents and kids will love the Secret Game Room, with its 100" screen, vintage records, popcorn maker, poker table and foosball and othere games galore.

Parents of younger kids will love Coast Park, with a 3-story pirate ship slide, across the street, and dog parents will love the dog park just down the street at the entrance to the beach.

It feels like a world away, tucked into the midst of a vibrant seaside neighborhood.
