About this property

Spacious & Comfortable Cottage-type Accommodation in heart of Cowbeech village

This holiday home is in the centre of the rural village of Cowbeech and is one end of the main house, which used to be the Village Post Office and Stores. The annexe is light and spacious - with bedroom (5' bed), shower room, sitting room (with wood burner), kitchen, conservatory & second WC. The décor is traditional. There is direct access to its own garden at the front and rear, with seating. There are suntrap spots, even in the Winter. Broadband connection and a BT landline are included. The village pub (the Merrie Harriers) is a five minute walk. Dogs welcome so long as they are safe with the odd free range chicken. Cowbeech and surrounding area is great for dog-walking and there are a lot of lovely circular walks, which can encompass a good pub. It is also a good area to visit gardens connected with the Open Gardens Scheme. Herstmonceux Castle (England's first brick-built castle) is a ten-minute drive away and again offers walks and gardens. The quiet beaches of Normans Bay and Pevensey are a 20-minute drive away and offer long stretches of sand to walk along when the tide is low and safe swimming. Hastings, Eastbourne and Brighton are within easy reach via road or rail. The nearest train stations are Polegate (15mins) and Stonegate (20mins), which provide direct lines to London (approx. 1hr 15mins). A short introduction by potential guests is appreciated - but not compulsory!

Quaint Sussex Cottage
The Old Post Office in a lovely Sussex Village was very comfortable. The age of the building was it's charm and although totally different from our Australian home this was the attraction for us. The location was chosen to be close to our UK family. In fact the pub 2 mins away was the venue for a large family gathering during our stay. We had a couple of small laundry equipment issues that Sue dealt with very quickly. We had one large thunderstorm with very heavy rain during which the conservatory roof leaked in several places. This did not detract from our stay and was acceptable due the age and quaint nature of The Old Post Office. We enjoyed our stay.

A place to relax
It is a nice place to relax. London can easily be reached by train from train stations which are about a 30 minutes car ride away. Apartment and kitchen are sufficiently equipped. Chicken in the garden supply eggs. The hostess is very friendly, cooperative and always available when needed. We have enjoyed our stay.

Homely sanctuary
Fantastic host, a lovely, kind and welcoming host, nothing too much trouble. We have had a lengthy stay in the old post office. I felt at home instantly. Lovely welcomed locally produced essential food in the fridge and local honey and marmalade. Very comfortable, warm abode. Our two small dogs most welcomed. Lovely safe garden. Superb pub a stones throw away the merrie harriers. Great food. Lovely peaceful, friendly neighbourhood.

Charming cottage in beautiful location
The cottage externally and location is beautiful with plenty of space for easy off road parking. The inside is a little dated but you soon realise that everything is immaculately clean and the whole place very well looked after. It was perfect for the two of us and we soon felt very at home. The bed was comfy, the shower pressure good, the kitchen well stocked and the conservatory where we spent most of our time was just lovely. The garden has a lovely apple tree and you get sun until about 5ish. We would then move back to the conservatory with the doors open to get another hour of sun before BBQ meals alfresco, delightful. The Merrie Harriers 2 min walk down the road has one of the best beer gardens we have ever experienced. Sitting with good beer watching the sunset was just wonderful. Lots to do and see in the local area and the weather was perfect, so swimming at Pevensey Bay 15 mins away was just a real treat. A big thank you to Sue who lives near door and was the most lovely host, we really enjoyed our chats and were grateful for all the helpful advice on the local area. We will return.

A country idyll, a haven !
Comfortable with every facility for an extended stay. The perfect place to stay in these extraordinary times. During our stay the garden provided constant amusement , the hens waddling up to greet, the sheep in the paddock occasionally mowing the lawn , the bird life .. Social distancing could have been very lonely without the day being punctuated with chats with Sue. The cottage is surrounded by many excellent waymarked walk. During our 5 weeks the woods and countryside became flooded by white wood anemones , then blue bells set off by the lime green of new leaves on the trees.

Beautiful stay in the heart of East Sussex
We stayed at the Old Post Office for an extended period during September and October 2019 whilst looking for property to buy in the area. There was plenty of room for 2 adults with a dog and a cat. The property is well equipped with a pleasant garden, and Sue is an exemplary host. The surrounding are beautiful with chicken and sheep in the adjacent garden and fields. We enjoyed walking our dog through the country footpaths and lanes. Any visitor will be in an ideal position to explore the many historic places and areas of natural beauty in East Sussex. All the people we met in the village were very friendly and helpful. The local pub ‘The Merrie Harriers’ provided a welcoming atmosphere and served splendid food. Our stay at the Old Post Office provided us with many splendid memories which we will always cherish. Thank you again Sue. Thoroughly recommended.

Sooooo relaxing
Cannot praise highly enough. A great place and a lovely host who made us feel so at home. The village is so peaceful and is a good base for discovering what the region has to offer......which turns out to be a lot. We will need to go back again and will definitely try to book this same property.

Very friendly house and host.
A house that feels like home right away and a very friendly host, Sue, who lives next door but leaves you be. Chickens, sheep and lots of birds in the lovely garden, a nice pub on two minutes walk. We could not wish for more!

March 2019
My Wife and I (and our pets) stayed with Sue in the Annex of the Old Post Office in Cowbeech, East Sussex, from January through March 2019. We were moving to the area and were waiting for our house to be completed. Sue is a very accommodating host, offering to take us into town and back for shopping, etc. She is.very helpful to answer questions and offer ideas on things to do in the area. The property is very comfortable with lots of utensils, pots and pans. It is in the countryside in a small village approximately 10 mins drive from Hailsham the closest large town. It is ~30 mins drive to the seaside town of Eastbourne. The location is quiet with many walking trails and options. There is a Pub in the Village, 5 mins walk along the road, which we did not take advantage of.. All in all a very peaceful and enjoyable location and stay.

Very cute, warm, well equipped, quiet location
My wife and I, and our pets, stayed with Sue for the month of January in 2019. We were moving to the area from overseas. The cottage is in a quiet village outside of a town called Hailsham. There is a pub within walking distance, that does serve food. We didn't sample this, as we cooked in the cottage mostly. Larger stores, (Tesco, etc..), can be found in Hailsham. The coast is ~30 mins drive so very accessible from the cottage. Sue is a very attentive host, ready to answer questions whenever we had them. The cottage is deceptively large, with a nice conservatory which was difficult to fully enjoy in January :-), and I am sure is wonderful in the spring/summer. The kitchen has all of the utensils, pots and pans necessary for a short, or long, stay. There was some stocked food on the shelves and in the refrigerator, which was a nice touch. The cottage is joined to Sue's main house, but is fully separate, with a private entrance. There is a large back garden which is great for our dogs. Just be careful with the dogs, as there are friendly chickens that like to come into the back yard. We really enjoyed our stay and were very thankful to Sue for her hospitality and flexibility, we would stay here again in the future.

Wonderful stay in the countryside!
I've had a wonderful stay in Sue's annexe and she is as delightful a host as one can wish for! The apartment is bigger than the pictures suggest and very comfortable, it actually feels like a house, since it's on the ground floor, has a separate entrance, a conservatory and it's own garden! (Where you sometimes get visited by some chicken, sheep, rabbits and all kinds of birds, some of which I haven't ever seen before!) The small village is charming, its pub is really good and the quiet rural life most relaxing! Still, you can reach the coastal towns like Eastbourne, Bexhill or Brighton within 20-40 minutes by car. The whole region is amazing and worth discovering!

A relaxed, welcoming rural retreat - a 'gem'.
I have just returned from my stay at The Old Post Office. Sue, the owner gave us a wonderful welcome. My dog was made to feel very at home too! We enjoyed a lovely, peaceful stay. The Annexe is very pretty - the original shop window and door are a lovely feature this same room at the front has a lovely fireplace and beams. I enjoyed sitting in the window eating breakfast and watching village life! the annexe has a cosy cottage feel though it is also spacious with a sunny conservatory at the rear which leads straight out onto a pretty enclosed garden for the sole use of the annexe. This is great for dog owners but also for just sitting and enjoying. There is a beautiful old apple tree in this part of the garden. Hens wander freely and sheep graze in the paddock close by which creates a lovely rural feel. At the front there is very easy parking and a cottage garden with old brick paths, trellis - all the right ingredients! The cottage is really well equipped - everything one needs is there this makes it very easy to just turn up with your clothes, it is a real home from home and while Sue welcomes dogs the cottage is immaculate so perfect for those without dogs too. I enjoyed free range eggs from Sue's hens for breakfast and fresh plums and was kindly given a marrow too! Cowbeech is a really pretty village. There are lots of lovely villages and pubs in the area and beautiful countryside. I would love to return. It was gorgeous for a summer break but because there is a solid fuel stove in the sitting room I also now fancy a winter break with the fire lit! I just wish I'd had a few more days to enjoy there. A lovely rural retreat, highly recommended by us! Thank you Sue!

About the host

My father and I bought the house together. He decided he would prefer to live only on the ground floor - so we converted one end for him. He lived there very happily and independently for ten years - with the added security of having me close at hand to help with the odd practicality.

Why they chose this property

The fact that it used to be a post office and village stores added interest and gave plenty of scope to convert to full living accommodation. The garden included a paddock, which has subsequently became home for a few sheep.

What makes this property unique

Rural and one feels safe and sound!
