I’ve been looking for a place to practice night photography where there isn’t much light pollution. I used a dark skies website to learn locations that would work for me—this is a good spot, with limited pollution from the Twin Cities and Duluth as well as other towns. Given our summer schedules, we had to go soon after a full moon, but we were able to figure things out to get some pretty good photos--we were able to capture photos of the Milky Way and just a few photos of meteors for the annual perseid meteor shower, which will be peaking during the new moon next weekend.
Beyond the night skies, we had great internet access (one of us had to work for the first day we were there and had no problems). We also went out to a couple of great MN State Parks (Banning/St. Croix) for some nice hikes and had some good down time reading books.
It was just what we needed.
Awesome place, comfortable and peaceful. Plenty of room to roam.
20 minutes away from any groceries or restaurants. So I would plan to pack all foods and snack.
Spent time at Banning State Park and at throttle Up ATV ‘s. Both were great.
Fire pit and star gazing with s’mores and a full moon, how can you top that!
Highly Recommend Crooked Creek Retreat! Naomi made check in and out easy!
Fall Get Away may be in the cards!
We loaded up our Frenchie and headed north from Kansas City to escape the fireworks and the heat. We couldn’t have been happier. The cabin was secluded and quiet and very well maintained. We would definitely return.
Perfect spot for a long weekend. Very close to St Croix State Park and State Forest where there is lots of hiking and hunting trails. The cabin itself is awesome. We love having a fire in the stove, listening to records, and playing cards at the kitchen table. The bonfire pit was comfortable as well for warmer nights. The owner is very clear on where everything is and what to do while you are there which makes it feel like you are going to your own cabin!
We had an absolutely amazing vacation at the Crooked Creek cabin. We loved the property, the cozy cabin, a spectacular vinyl collection — and our kids even performed a little play on the stage down in the barn. This was a vacation we will not soon forget!
Cozy, pretty cabin with enough space for us and two young adult children and a dog to enjoy. We appreciated the amazing album collection, the wood stove, and the story of this property being in the family for multiple generations. We loved walking around the property and went for a nice winter hike at St. Croix State Park. The cabin was clean and decorated so nicely. Thank you! We would definitely stay here again!
This was a great place for a last-minute trip to get out of the cities without too long of a car ride. The area was beautiful with room to walk and play outside. It was fun to stay in a log cabin with lots of history and character. The only slight downside was it was a bit dark (but very cozy). We had everything we needed. Nice to be close to the Saint Croix State Park too.
We do an annual girl's weekend at a VRBO. This place was great. Lots of room. The outside had a fire pit and area to play outdoor games. The record player was a bit hit for everyone of all ages.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Crooked Creek cabin. Our family of six and our 9 year-old lab loved the privacy of the cabin. The yard was ideal for our dog (she loves to play fetch), and the fire pit under the stars was very relaxing. The cabin was clean and cozy and well-equipped with everything we needed. The air conditioning unit came in clutch as we had a couple of hot, humid days. A thunderstorm rolled through and knocked out the wi-fi, but Naomi was very responsive to this issue. We found a small lake for fishing nearby, and we had so much fun catching some big bass (all six of us)! We
also took a couple of day trips to St. Croix State Park (MN), Pattison State Park (WI), Amnicon Falls State Park (WI), and to Wisconsin Point beach on Lake Superior. This trip was just so much fun! Thanks for providing our family with a great spot for our vacation, Naomi!
(The television is in the basement with not much seating around, but I was secretly happy for this, as our family spent more time together playing cards, putting together puzzles, and playing Cornhole).
It was a very nice place to stay. A few things that could be improved is getting microwave off of refrigerator, very dark in living room even with all lights on. Told us we could use the grill, but was no Lp and should make it known there is no TV. We still had a nice stay despite these issues.
If you’re looking for the quintessential cabin experience this is it! The authentic log cabin will transport you to a simpler time when people talked to each other! The fresh air, nature noises, woods, and fire pit were enjoyed by all. This was probably the most relaxed I have been in years!
This cabin was perfect for our weekend getaway. The cabin was more than large enough for our family. Communication with the owner was exemplary! Naomi was very responsive to messages and provided detailed information about the cabin, surrounding area & check-in/out process.
We had a great time hiking, playing games and listening to the impressive record collection. Our son had a great time exploring the woods with our dog.
The kitchen had everything we needed to cook. The bathrooms and whole cabin was pristinely clean. The beds were comfortable & the flannel sheets were a nice touch for the winter! My husband loved the wood burning stove & it was so cozy to read or play cards by the fire in the evening.
10 out of 10 — HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
We enjoyed being outside during this beautiful fall season. Inside we puzzled, played games, listened to records and enjoyed unplugging. Very special place, we will surely be back!
Our family had a great time at the Crooked Creek Cabin! It was the perfect place to relax and unplug. Close enough to the cities for a short weekend and far enough out to enjoy the peace the quiet. Great property with a beautiful park and forests near by.
We had to move up our vacation on very short notice. We wanted a secluded, quiet space where our family could spend our last vacation together, as one of our dogs had been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. This met all of our criteria. A quiet, relaxing time with books, games, tennis balls and bubbles. Thank you for sharing this space with us. .
This is a great place with plenty of space in and out. Very quite and secluded. It was an amazing place to hang out in for a week. There is a lot to do and see nearby, but just hanging around the property was very relaxing. You have everything you need!

Cozy Cabin
We stayed at the Crooked Creed Retreat over Memorial Day weekend and had a great stay. The cabin has every amenity that is needed, and Naomi made herself available should anything have come up. We will keep this property in mind for future visits to the Hinkley-Danbury area.

Why they chose this property
This was my grandparents' home and hobby farm for over forty years. I grew up down the path and loved playing in the woods, taking care of goats and am overjoyed to keep this magical place in the family after all of these years- allowing others to enjoy the peaceful place that is Crooked Creek Retreat.
What makes this property unique
Wide open spaces, paths through the prairie, fire pit under the night sky all year round.
