Great stay around the holidays
Mark and Barbara's Den is the perfect place for a short stay in Caroga, very conveniently located with easily accessible hosts. My son and I had a great time while in the area and were happy to come back to a well-equipped, organized, and pleasant space each evening.

Overall our 4 day stay was enjoyable! The owners were very accommodating and accessible for questions and requests. The house was overall clean and gave you access to a large kitchen with all the extras. The Moose Den notebook was very helpful and appropriate for the house rules and local activities. We visited earlier in the year so many of the seasonal attractions were not yet open. Loved the record player and hominess atmosphere to relax. Our only recommendations would be to update board games or replace missing pieces. Thank you for sharing your home and hospitality. The Rhodes family

Clean, sweet home w/friendly owners
We had a lovely stay in the Adirondacks at this cozy, warm home. A perfect, relaxing winter getaway for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids ages 9 & 3). Our kids loved the snacks left for us upon arrival by the owners, and the home was clean and ready. Really nice kitchen (perhaps radiant heated floors?) with all the kitchen accessories you'd need. Nice TV in family and lots of family games, puzzles and books about the area. Generous dining room table that seats 6+ people! While we didn't use the outdoor grill & firepit area much, this would be great fun especially in the summer or fall. Area restaurant options are limited between Covid & wintertime, but some planning led us to Gloversville. Highly recommend geocashing & hiking at accessible trail at Willie Wildlife Marsh. The real win for this place is the thoughtful, friendly owners who go out of their way to make sure your party feels welcomed and comfortable.

The owners and property are wonderful! Communication was easy and great; the space is lovely and very comfortable. The owners were so kind and helpful- they left wine and snacks! and gave us lots of ideas for things to do on the way to the property and once we were there. It was an absolute delight!

A perfect stay
We absolutely loved our stay in the moose den! The house was beautiful, clean, spacious, and welcoming. We loved sitting on the porch with our morning coffee/evening glass of wine. My boyfriend enjoyed the mountain biking trails which were right nearby. We had lovely fire out back and Barbara was so kind to leave plenty of firewood for us. We would absolutely return to the moose den and hope to come back next summer for a longer stay!

Cute house. Exactly as advertised. Owner very welcoming. Daughter loved it!
The check in process was easy (welcoming call from the owner). Everything was as expected. House was very welcoming and charming. Lots of little details, especially for kids. My daughter thought the record player was great. We even made ice cream in the ice cream maker!!! Huge oversized tub, great kitchen, wifi, plenty of room to relax. In the morning I sat outside on the deck for coffee and watched about 12 or so turkeys just stroll past (not more than 10ft from me). Thanks for a great stay!

The Moose Den
Amazing Stay! Thank you! We cleaned & put everything back how it was when we first walked in. The house was clean when we walked in!! We did leave some condiments (For Burgers & Hot Dogs.) In the fridge. We put garbage out Monday (Actually did it the night prior, there was still garbage from other guest in one can.) Then the garbage was never picked up Monday, so we left them out by the curb/mailbox because the neighbors across the road had theirs out. We tried to leave the house how we would want it left, and how it was before we came. Thank you for everything and letting us stay at your amazing house!!!!

Overall was nice
Overall the property was nice! We didn’t receive the pin code for the key beforehand and when we got there late after work we couldn’t get a hold of the owners, around 9pm. There is no service at the house so we had to drive around 10 minutes out to call them. They didn’t answer after multiple calls and we had to call the VRBO customer service to get connected with them. Overall was an okay stay. Would’ve been 5 stars if we had the pin code or were able to get a hold of them quicker

A Perfect Getaway
My boyfriend and I needed a break from being quarantined in our tiny Queens apartment. And this place what exactly the refresher we needed. The house is beautiful. Very clean and stocked with most everything that you need! We felt very at home here. Located in Adirondack Park, there are multiple hiking trails less than a 5 min drive. There’s a store 5 min down the street that has the essentials, and also has boat rentals! We rented a 20ft pontoon for less than $200! There are multiple lakes nearby and we were in heaven. Back to the house. We built fires and grilled every single night. I cannot recommend this place enough. We want to come back ASAP.

Great Location, Lovely House
Owners take great pride in making sure their home is special for travelers. They both reached out to us prior to our arrival to share what they have been doing to make this place great. The attention to detail was noticed and appreciated. All the rooms were inviting and comfortable. The cleanliness was our only concern. The place looked clean upon arrival (what we call surface cleaned). There were dirty dishes mixed in with the clean ones (may be from past travelers not using the dishwasher). The fan and some of the lights had a lot if dust on them. All the nightlight bulbs were burned out (they were very cute though). The lighting through the house was great. The counters were dark and looked clean until we checked and had to clean them. The outside and inside of the coffee unit was dirty. The fridge and inside some of the cabinets were dirty. We did some cleaning or put down parchment paper. The dish drain and silverware drawer were very dirty. We did clean all the items that we thought we use during our trip and put them in a few places that we kept cleaned. So we did have to rearrange the kitchen settings a little but. You could not use many of the drawers in the bedrooms because they were dirty inside. But we washed the sheets and used the top of the extra beds to put our stuff on. After that, we loved the place. That was until we an invasion of ladybugs in the upstair bedrooms. Not much to do except to keep the lights out as much as possible. We didn't want to have any treatments done while were there so we didn't reach out to the property manager as some may have done. There was a dishwasher, cleaning products, washer and dryer to meet all our cleaning needs. The owners made an amazing and helpful manual that had all the resources in all the surrounding areas. The TV and Wifi worked well. We could not get the DVD player to work however. There was the cutest fireplace in the living room that was nice to use. The porch furniture was clean and comfortable. The outside had a huge grill and a firepit. Ample wood and supplies were left out. The house was easy to keep the perfect temperature. The kitchen was filled with lots of things to cook and bake with. The huge tub was a special treat each night. The people in the area we all friendly and helpful. We stayed an additional night because there was more we wanted to do in the county. There are so many lakes, hiking trails and unique places to visit. We did leave the place clean.

Perfect adorable cottage for a stay at Caroga Lake
Absolutely adorable cottage, it had so many lovely decorative touches as well as being fully stocked with everything we could need. Perfect size for my husband and I, two kids and my dad. We loved the record player and large collection of vinyl, the kids loved all the moose stickies, and the games to play with. Great location and very clean and well organized. We're coming back!
My husband and I came to Caroga lake for a wedding. We booked the Moose den along with my best friend and her husband and decided to have a mini vacation on either end of the wedding which was the best decision ever! I can tell you that after comparing notes with others, our accommodations far exceeded everyone else's. The Porterfields had us set up for success. The place was lean, comfortable, beautiful and functional. We played albums, danced, cooked on the grill and in the spacious kitchen, enjoyed cocktails and coffee on the deck, slept like babies and even had an impromptu brunch with a few friends who were in town for the wedding (the complimentary bottle of champagne came in handy for the mimosas!) we even did a load of laundry. The location is ideal and close to everything. We weren't right on the water but we were literally a three minute drive to the general store, Caroga lake marina (where we rented a party boat for a couple of hours) and five minutes away from a nice hike up Kane mountain. And we were walking distance from Nick Stoner's restaurant where we enjoyed a great dinner and brunch with the wedding party. Our last comment to our best friends upon departing was "now we need to plan to come back next summer!" I can't say enough about this property or the owners. We loved it!!
