About this property

Sleeps 6 in 4 Queen Beds, former farmland, near New Bern, home of Tryon Palace.

SUMMARY
Formerly an animal and vegetable farm, this beautiful home sits on 10 acres and is only 2 miles from from hwy 55 and hwy 70 and not far from hwy 17. It has a spacious yard with back porch and wheelchair ramp. Surrounded by a mature forest, the home is still a short drive from New Bern's burgeoning downtown, quaint eateries, popular pier, and nearby attractions such as local fishing, boating, bird watching, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Fort Jackson, Camp Lejeune, and Cherry Point.

THE SPACE
The house is new, but the land was farmed by my granddad and dad (and their siblings) since the early 1900’s. There were cows, horses, goats, hogs, chickens, dogs, and of course vegetables and flowers. Farming is what helped them survive the Great Depression, raise their families, and continue up to 2013 when my father sold the last goats. It really is a special place where time seems to stop and stress falls away. I hope you enjoy your stay.

This is a newer home and completely updated from the kitchen to the closets. There are lots of windows, which make the home bright and airy and provide views of the expansive yard and field.

With 4 queen beds, everyone in your group will get the space and privacy they want for the price you want. The Master Suite has a queen bed, giant walk-in closet, and private full bathroom with garden tub and shower. The second bedroom has 2 queen beds and a walk-in closet. The third bedroom has 1 queen bed and a walk-in closet.

The house includes an eat in kitchen with breakfast bar and dining room, a large living room, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and laundry room.

This home is great for individuals, families, or groups. Children are welcome, but please note the home is not child-proofed and does not provide any baby/toddler supplies or furniture.

GUEST ACCESS
Guests can access everything, including a fully equipped kitchen and the washer and dryer. Please, clean what you use (dishes, stovetop, spills, etc.) and return everything to its place (games, remotes, keys, etc.)

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
To stay in this home, at least one guest should be able to open the front gate by hand. It is about 20 lbs.

The interior doors are wide enough for wheelchairs and there is a ramp on the back porch.

This is a non-smoking house.

Pets and farm animals formerly lived on this property.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD
I love this little area because it is a safe, quiet, close-knit community. All of the neighbors know each other and are very friendly, but there is so much land between this house and the next, that there is lots of privacy. The house is tucked away, surrounded by mature trees and forest, but still less than 2 miles from highway 55 and highway 70 and not far from highway 17. You'll never have your roads blocked off for marathons and festivals, but you'll still be able to enjoy all the downtown activity.

You'll be about 10 minutes from anything in New Bern. With quick and easy highway access, downtown is almost a straight shot from any nearby road.

Everything you need for a relaxing stay

My girlfriends and I stayed the weekend at this property on a visit to New Bern for Bike MS. It was just what we were looking for and had every amenity we needed to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. The home was very clean, the beds and linens were comfortable, all the appliances worked great, and the cabinets were stocked with everything we needed for the weekend. The large living room and kitchen were great for hanging out with friends after a long day. Highly recommended! We hope to return next year!

Home away from home

This home was our temporary home while we had our house built. We have two medium well behaved dogs and needed a place for them, and also a place that was fully furnished. This home fit those needs for us completely. Gayle was incredibly quick and helpful with any and all inquiries we made or things that needed some attention. We were so grateful to have this home available to us, and would definitely recommend this home especially for someone in our situation. Thank you Gayle!

Excellent place to relax and unwind

We stayed for 30 days while waiting to move into our new home in New Bern. New Bern is a fantastic area with so much to do. The property is located close to the waterfront and to stores, shops, and restaurants. We are so grateful to have had this home available to us during our transition. Everything you need is there. The home is exactly as you see in the pictures. The furniture was comfortable, including the beds. Gayle was incredibly quick and helpful with all of our inquiries. Thank you for your hospitality. We definitely recommend it!

Cozy Comfort

We rented this property for 2 months with our 6 pets. The home is exactly as the pictures show. The furniture was comfortable, including the beds. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, and silverware. The yard is quite large and my dogs loved it. We saw wild turkeys, deer, and lots of birds. It was very quiet and peaceful. Gayle responded very quickly when I needed information. If you want a peaceful place near farms, this is for you.

Quiet Stay

While waiting on our home to be completed, we stayed here for over a month. Thanks to Gayle, we were able to bring both of our dogs and cats. Very quiet stay and some picturesque early mornings. The dogs also enjoyed the HUGH yard. Thank you again Gayle for your hospitality. We really did enjoy your 'Humble Home".

Perfect for us ( 4 children, 2 adults and 2 dogs)

The pictures do not do this property justice, it is very spacious and what we was looking for. We visit NC quite often and this house is where we would want to stay at when we visit.

Truly a home away from home

I have never stayed at a property where your every need was anticipated as it was at this property. They provided everything you needed and more. It was comfortable and spacious. The kitchen was well stocked. I love how they provided all the southern comfort. I enjoyed my stay, I would recommend it to anyone and hopefully I can return again and get to enjoy it under different circumstances. Ideal for a small family reunion or get together

Quiet, well furnished, stocked and clean

Very clean, well decorated, comfortable home in quiet area just outside of new bern. Plenty of room both inside and outside of home. Close enough to town yet private. Would highly recommend and if I find myself back in area would definetly book again.

About the host

Hosted by Gayle Wiley

Host profile image
I am a Registered Nurse and my sister Caral is in Government Security in Washington DC. We are co-hosts for our family home in New Bern, NC. It is our private get-away for peace and quiet. We both love to visit the home! I love listening to music (especially Jazz), making Jewelry, carpentry, and going to movies with my husband. My life motto is to treat others as I want to be treated.

Why they chose this property

This is my father’s humble home! The house is newer, but the land was farmed by my granddad and dad (and their siblings) since the early 1900’s. There were cows, horses, goats, hogs, chickens, dogs, and of course vegetables and flowers. Farming is what helped them survive the Great Depression, raise their families, and continue up to 2013 when my father sold the last goats. It really is a special place where time seems to stop and stress falls away.

The house is close to nearby beaches, so I grew up fishing and crabbing locally. There are also Neuse River cruises, nice restaurants, bird watching, hiking, and so on close by, but not so close as to ruin the scenic farm-life appeal of my father's home.

What makes this property unique

You'll love having a coffee on the back porch, listening to early morning birds, and watching rabbits hop through the yard looking for food.
