Fantastic stay at Windy Knoll for our annual ladies trip. Great location for hikes in the morning and vineyards in afternoon. Hoping to return in the fall as I imagine the foliage is incredible!
This was a perfect place for our bestie gathering. The location is beautiful...secluded and lovely. The house was truly impeccable. We loved the space. It was so well appointed with the little things that you may need. Simply awesome! Thank you to these great hosts!thoughtfully!
We saved up our money and chose this home to celebrate our winter holiday, as well as my birthday I share with my baby. We were so excited! In advertisement owner’s claimed they had a working fireplace, this was a huge reason we rented this vacation home for our celebration. When we contacted owner they seemed very annoyed with our call and said they “have no idea” how to work it and to “use the manual to figure it out”. I apologized for inconveniencing them but asked to please help us as it was included in our stay and was something we specifically looked for when choosing a house. Mike reluctantly stayed on the phone, trying to remember how to work it. After awhile our conversation seemed to take a lighthearted turn but, unfortunately the fireplace remained inoperable. Mike admitted, at the end of the call, that it is over 25 years old and he has known for over a year that it has needed to be replaced. My spouse and I spent well over an hour hunched down in the dirty, dead-bug filled fireplace in diagnostics, to no avail.Along with this issue the electricity in the home may be faulty as the breaker to the refrigerator flipped even though we never connected any other appliances to it. This happened while we were gone from the home, so we returned to water leaked on the floor and about 100 of food spoiled. We debated reporting these issues to VRBO but decided to just enjoy our short stay and move on. We understand that things happen and wanted to focus on the happy time
Windy Knoll is the best of all worlds - a quiet mountain retreat to relax at and disappear into nature, while being close enough to multiple great towns to enjoy what they have to offer as well. The owners clearly love this home, always upgrading to make the experience more enjoyable. Can't get enough of this place!
We just had another lovely stay at Windy Knoll... same relaxing scenery where we could decompress and the house that was tastefully renovated! The personal touch and the amenities to make guests feel welcome remain a constant at Windy Knoll, from first quality bed linens/towels, well stocked kitchen/pantry to fresh coffee beans to enjoy and recommendations for things to do in the area! And then also dog bowls and towels for dirty paws for the furry guest!
Needless to say, we will be back as soon as we can!
My husband and I had a 3 day/2 night stay and enjoyed every minute of it. We loved the peace and tranquility of the big front porch and the gorgeous views of the rolling landscape and mountain. The upstairs loft/bedroom is enormous and very comfortable with a nice Eames chair for contemplating the view out the big picture windows. There were thoughtful extras - throw blankets, well stocked laundry room, extra bedding, abundant toiletries and the kitchen had spices and plenty of plastic wrap and ziplock bags for leftovers.
It was only a few minutes' drive to both the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway and we took advantage of both. The hiking and overlook views are amazing as we had lovely cool, clear weather.
Such an amazingly beautiful house and view. It felt like home. 8 days of pure relaxation. This property has everything that is needed for a perfect stay. Our 2nd visit and it wont be our last. Thank you Wendy and Mike - perfect hosts.
Delightful property in a very private neighborhood. Beautiful view from the porch of the mountain line and the family of deer. They came to visit everyday along with cardinals and hummingbirds. It was peaceful and serene. The house was well stocked, air conditioning and WI-FI worked great. We loved the window seat and so did our dog. She took one look at it and made it her spot. The porch really made the house extra special. Fantastic view and very cozy feel. We really enjoyed our time!
Home was very clean and well stocked. Front porch had amazing view and wildlife was abound. We were extremely pleased with our stay and will definitely be returning.
The home was perfect! We came for my husbands graduation. The drive to the graduation was not bad! The views from the home were amazing such a relaxing place! The hospitality was beyond my expectations! Would come back!
Stayed here a few days as part of larger vacation with my girlfriend, mother and dogs. The property is in a great location and only minutes from everything we like to do. The house is in a very quiet neighborhood and had lots of well thought out extras, including for pets. We would definitely stay here again.
My family decided to take a quick three-night trip to escape work and just relax and this was definitely the place to do it!
We enjoyed the gorgeous views from the home and visits every night from the white-tail deer.
The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to cook a nice meal and enjoy our relaxing weekend.
The host was extremely responsive and helpful.
We all enjoyed ourselves, including our two dogs who loved the acreage to explore.
The host Wendy was very kind and quick to respond to us. This beautiful vacation cottage home has great views and awesome for seeing the stars and moon out the huge windows! The cottage was incredibly clean, organized and comfortable. It is ideally located to all that the Blue Ridge Mountains and Central VA have to offer. Worked out great for us to stay here as we have family that live on both sides of Afton Mountain that we were visiting.
You never stop being impressed with this property. It is in the most beautiful setting with views from every room. The furnishings are lovely and comfortable and no detail has been missed. I have never stayed anywhere with a better stocked kitchen. There are full sized bath products and fluffy white towels in the bathrooms. Even the closets are decorated with pictures! Gorgeous artwork in every room. Large front porch for evening beverages and watching the wild life. Stay here. Don’t look any further.
We had the most enjoyable stay in the mountains of Virginia. Perfectly situated for an easy trip to Charlottesville, a hike in Shenandoah national park, a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and so many wineries and breweries. The house itself was fantastic on a beautiful piece of property. So clean, comfortable, with fantastic views. I couldn’t ask for more. Great hosts.
Another great stay at Windy Knoll! Could not have been prettier fall views with the changing colors. The house is cozy and well looked after, we appreciated all of the updates made in the last couple years. We will be back!
Windy Knoll is a most relaxing get-away! The house is always very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked. There is loads of information on hikes in the area, restaurants, and the wineries and breweries along Rte. 151. The porch is wonderful with beautiful views!
If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to spend some free time, check out " Windy Knoll" .
This was our second stay at Windy Knoll. Last year, we never left the house! This year we did do some R and R but also did some sightseeing. It's impossible not to relax here. Our favorite place? The front porch and our dogs agree. The front yard is beautiful to look at but also great for a good dog walk any time of day. The little back porch was nice for grilling, sitting, and watching the trees sway in the wind. A wonderful place to stay!
My husband, myself, and our dog stayed at Windy Knoll for a week and it was a lovely home and property. You could clearly see the effort and thought that went into every aspect of the home and that the owners truly care about your comfort and experience. The house is outfitted nicely and the kitchen is very functional and well supplied. The view from the front porch is beautiful. We saw 4-6 deer grazing on the lawn every day, morning and evening, and even got a visit from a fox! There is plenty to do in the area as well. Wineries, Meaderies, hiking, horse back riding, art, etc., and Charlottesville is an easy half hour drive away. My only complaint is the lack of a large and comfortable bed. The biggest bed available was about the size of a queen and not particularly comfortable, but the full was comfortable and there were twin size beds downstairs that we did not try. Not bad enough to knock off a star though. We will certainly be back!

About the host

Our full time home is in Wilmington North Carolina where we spend many hours enjoying the coastal waterways of the Cape Fear region. Wendy works in the culinary field and Mike has a hypno-therapy business. When we are not busy at work we are working in the garden, fishing on our boat, or playing in the water with our dogs, Camden and Noodle.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the Afton area when Wendy's Mom built a log home on Jessica Lane (she lives up the street!) 15 years ago. We have spent many hours hiking and enjoying all the area has to offer during all of our visits to Mom' house. We have always admired Windy Knoll and were so excited when the opportunity came about to purchase this wonderful home.
What makes this property unique
When you see Windy Knoll for the first time you will understand why we fell in love with it..... setting is picture perfect. Sitting on the front porch and looking out over the beautiful grassy landscape is truly relaxing. The sunlight streams in the windows, the wind chimes blow in the breeze, the birds sing in their trees.....
