About this property

Wilderness and Aurora views yet close to town

A charming cedar shake house perched on a bluff overlooking the Tanana River with a view of the Alaska Range mountains when the weather permits. About 2000 square feet with 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed plus a sofa for overflow sleeping. Total of 5 people can be accommodated in winter.

I have lived at Casa Tanana for the past 18 years and have enjoyed it immensely. I recently retired from the Univeristy of Alaska Fairbanks and would like to share my home and its ambiance with you while I am away.

You should think about renting Casa Tanana if you want the most deluxe river camp possible, with an outstanding view of the Tanana River and mountains beyond, where you can enjoy Interior Alaska regardless of the weather. The power of Alaska is in the rivers, mountains and skies and all three are on uncluttered display from the living room and most other places on the property.

If the cloud cover and aurora activity are right you can see the aurora from inside the house if you turn off all the lights. The view from within the house will not be as clear as it would be if you went outside because you will be looking through 4 panes of glass. However, there is no light pollution at Casa Tanana. If you visit primarily for the aurora you should plan on having a car and spending time driving around for the best vantage point for a particular night.

Late in the winter when the ice is thickest there is easy access to cross-country skiing on the Tanana River. Easiest skiing is on snow-machine trails on the river but you can venture off the trails to read the animal tracks along the banks.

Casa Tanana sits about 100 feet above river level and the view is to the East south-east across the Tanana River and onto the Tanana Flats. The land across the river is a functional wilderness and as a result you never see fixed lights from the living room window in the months when it gets dark, yet you are only about 15 minutes from Fairbanks International Airport, 2 hours from Denali National Park and within about 10 miles of the Fairbanks city center, all accessible on good paved roads.

About 50 miles across the flats are the mountains of the Alaska Range and when it is clear you can see four peaks ranging from about 12,000 to 14,000 feet in elevation. There is a key to their names on an end table in the living room.

The river is alive, regardless of the season. As a natural travel corridor, aircraft of all types, dog teams, skiers, and watercraft pass by. The water level fluctuates dramatically among the seasons with the least water and most abundant sandbars from late-September through late-June. Mile-wide shallow water dominates the view from late-June through mid-September as snow melts in the mountains. Full moon nights on expansive pure white snow are enchanting. The nighttime skies are unpolluted and the aurora is visible from the property when active and it is not overcast.

Total Lunar Eclipse in Fairbanks!

Dennis was a great host and the house was perfect. Cozy but roomy, well-stocked, and gorgeous views. We had a perfect view of the total lunar eclipse, dramatic mountains, and beautiful sunrises. The house was easy to find and it was a short drive from town. Thanks Dennis!

Great communication throughout

The property was clean and as advertised. During our stay, a bad snow storm knocked out the power and we ended up having to spend one night in a hotel. The host stayed in communication with us the whole time and was more than happy to refund the one night we could not stay in the cabin. The rest of our stay after the power came back on was great!

Great Property with an awesome view

My husband and I had a terrific time. We saw Denali on a clear day. It was so beautiful. We went to a reindeer farm and walked a reindeer through the woods. We also went to Chena hot springs and saw the most beautiful sunset at Murphy dome. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy for the Aurora. It was totally worth it. The house had an amazing view and it was centrally located to all the places we when. It was cozy and had a fully stocked kitchen. We had great commutation with the host.

Casa Tanana

We had a fantastic stay at Casa Tanana. Everything was as advertised. The house is in a great location, near town yet still has a secluded feeling. We loved looking out over the river. We would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful!!

The house was very cozy. Beautiful views!! Fairbanks Alaska is a whole new world. The lights cooperated - yay!! It is best to drive away from the city - they are definitely there:):) The location was central to all we wanted to do.

Cozy, warm, relaxing

We loved our time at Casa Tanana and wish we had more time to spend there. In spite of below average temps for most of the week, the house was warm and cozy. We loved looking out over the frozen river, watching snow machines, sled dogs, and cross country skiers. This was our second time visiting Fairbanks and we enjoyed it so much more - largely because of our accomodations. Amazing Aurora shows didn't hurt, either. Our host was responsive and helpful before and during the trip. We definitely want to return to Fairbanks and stay at Casa Tanana again.

Perfect home for Birthday celebration and Fairbanks fun!

We just returned from a week stay at Casa Tanana and our memories there are seared with beauty, comfort and wonderment. The house is very easy to enjoy, I spent much of my time watching out the windows in the Atrium, such a fantastic view! All your comfort needs are taken care of, comfy beds, clean bathrooms and house, well stocked kitchen. The owner is great at communicating, shares this lovely home and you will not be disappointed when you visit.

Atrium has great acoustics

Brought an instrument and spent most of the weekend relaxing in the atrium, enjoying the view and the acoustics there. The house is really comfortable, and our family unanimously agreed that we have to go back. Not a good spot for younger kids, but my older kids loved it. Comfortable beds made a big impression as well.

Awesome property with awesome views!

We (wife, son and I) only stayed for 2 nights, but would have enjoyed more time there. The house was perfect for us. Plenty of room Clean Magazines/books/games/telescope… Plenty of info inside about things to do and where to eat Fridge had extras inside (we took 2 beers but left a few snacks) Great location just out of town but only by 10 minutes We have no complaints, thank you for a well setup enjoyable “home base” with awesome views. If we were there during aurora time I’m sure we would have a great chance to see it.

AMAZING VIEWS! Very clean and safe. We will 100% be coming back!!!

WOW, this cabin is absolutely gorgeous!! Breathtaking views of the river, close to the city yet away from all the noise, very clean and safe! The cabin is well stocked with grocery staples and has everything you need (toiletries, towels, etc). We rented a 4x4 SUV and had no problem going down the driveway, which is a little steep. The atrium is very cozy and is perfect for viewing the aurora. Check in and check out was extremely easy, straightforward instructions are in an information booklet on the kitchen counter. My boyfriend and I wished we could take the cabin back home with us because it is the definition of perfection. We will definitely be coming back and booking this cabin for our whole trip!
