I would never imagine this kind of dispute could happen to my family (me, my husband, and two young kids). We stayed at Leslie’s house for two nights. We prepaid a huge amount cleaning fee for this 3000 sqft house, a refundable damage deposit, and property damage protection insurance on request from Leslie! Also vrbo service fee and tax... On our arrival, We did notice there was a paper lying on the table. But we did not pay attention to read the whole page: there were about a dozen very specific densely written requirements. We turned directly our eyes to the bottom line and saw the wifi password which we were looking for, then put the paper aside. During the stay, I and my husband didn't rest well due to the soft mattress and the noisy ventilation downstairs. Before we checked out, we did clean up the pool toys as we used to, but we ignore the big ones. I never know we should strip the bed so we did not do that. Half an hour after the check-out, we received the message from the host saying that she was very unhappy with us and asked us to pay an extra cleaning fee. She said with a commanding tone that, we disobeyed her rules in leaving beds unstriped, toys uncleaned up, used towels failed to be put downstairs. She said she could claim this either from my returnable damage deposit or gave me an additional payment link (outside of Vrbo) to pay for it. (It makes me feel she is a professional in stealing money from her guests.) We refused her request. First, we did not leave her extra cleaning job. An unstriped bed, unpicked-up toys, un cleaned-up towels would not result in tremendous cleaning fees. Her house had been booked on the same day of our check-out. That's to say, she cleaned up the house in using four hours for most. (The check out time is 12 pm, the check-in time is 4 pm. ) Four hours cleaning would not cost the amount she asked. I asked the host before the reservation why she asks for this much cleaning fee? She answered as she was asked by the housekeeper that amount of money. (But I thought she cleaned her house by herself.) We did zero damage to her house. I could not tolerate her to deduct the extra cleaning fee from the deposit money. If there is damage, why she did not use the prepurchased property damage insurance? Vrbo asked the owner to provide the proof for extra cleaning fee,but she was unable to make it. Please be very careful with this picky and greedy owner!
