About this property

Lake Superior lakefront log cabin, forest, sauna, gazebo, peaceful retreat

The Palisade Log Cabin is a lake front, wooded private retreat on the north shore of Lake Superior. It is located just off Highway 61, one mile northeast of Silver Bay. It is about a half mile through heavily wooded lots to the 45-year-old secluded and authentic log cabin. The cabin sits on seven acres of private land, and has more than 460 feet of high rugged Lake Superior shoreline.

There are incredible views to the north of the Palisade Head Cliffs. These cliffs reach 350 feet high and are a favorite of rock climbers. You can hear the waves of the lake crashing against the ledge rock cliffs just 70 feet from the cabin. The sunrises over the lake are spectacular; in the evening you might be able to view the northern lights.

We installed a geothermal heating/cooling system in October 2012 which should keep the cabin warm and cozy all winter long, and cool in the summer. Enjoy the peace and solitude of the whispering pines and birch while watching a bald eagle flying above. You can read a book or play cards/games near the cabin’s warm wood stove. Outside you can toast marshmallows at the fire pit or play horseshoes. Search for Thomsonites, agates, crystals, cobblestones, or driftwood at the nearby Black beach, go berry picking, or view colorful spring wild flowers and brilliant fall foliage.

There are many things to do and explore in the area:
-Drive the Highway 61/Superior National Forest Scenic Byway and visit the beautiful Minnesota state parks nearby (see map).
-Hike on The Superior Hiking Trail that runs from Two Harbors to the Canadian border. -Ride your bike on the Gitche Gami Bike Trail that runs along Highway 61.
-Snowmobile on the North Shore State Snowmobiling Trail or drive an ATV on designated ATV trails from Duluth to Grand Portage.
-Try cross-country skiing on the North Shore Mountain Cross Country Ski Trail.
-Visit Lutsen Mountains ski resort 36 miles from the cabin.

In the summer you can go to Black Beach less then a mile away, and nearby beautiful sandy beaches which are part of Tettegouche State Park or hike to the beautiful High Falls. Take a charter boat tour or fishing trip out of the Silver Bay Marina, that is 3.5 miles to the southwest. If you're adventurous, you can go kayaking in the cove. Golfing is available at Silver Bay golf course, and there is live music in Silver Bay July 14- September 1.

Watch for giant iron ore carriers on Lake Superior; they depart from Silver Bay and head east to Cleveland. Look for wildlife around the cabin and you may see eagle, deer, moose, bear, fox, wolf, and beaver. If you don’t feel like cooking, dine at a variety of fine nearby restaurants (Northwoods Cafe in Silver Bay, Lemon Wolf in Beaver Bay, Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay; Rustic Inn near Two Harbors) or check out the new Timber Coffee Company near downtown Silver Bay.

There is also a local grocery store, Zups, located just five minutes for the cabin for last minute supplies.

The Palisade Log Cabin is in close proximity to all activities listed here, most within just a few miles. Most important, take time to enjoy a classic log cabin experience on the North Shore!

Pets are allowed based on owners approval and guests must following pet rules.
Pet policy:
Only well-behaved pets are allowed at the cabin. No pets on bedding or furniture; clean up after pets inside and out; do not leave pets unattended; remain on leash outside; crate when you leave cabin. Please watch pets carefully outside to ensure they are protected from wildlife and the surrounding natural areas, and that they do not bother or interact with neighbors or neighbors' pets.

Perfect setting to relax and decompress
This was our second stay at this lovely log cabin in a wonderful private setting on Lake Superior. Perfect for a couple. Quality amenities all around with a great wood fired sauna just a few steps from the cabin. The lakeside deck faces almost due east for some amazing sunrises.

Special place to stay
We stayed 5 nights and were pleased to find a very fine crafted wooden cabin with huge logs and awesome views of the lake and the cliffs. Quiet cabin, comfortable beds, effective heating, everything appears new and well designed. The "anti"-slip mat in the bath tub was slippery. Just place a hand towel over it and it goes well. No reason to complain. The cabin might be too much a treasure to let dogs in. Outside, you may hear traffic, neighbours, and dogs. Since it is very quiet inside, we think that the cabin is well insulated. We recommend the place and would like to come back.

Wonderful. Great location for peace and solitude with gorgeous sunrises. Close to great hiking trails and some of the offerings of the north shore. We were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, neatness and completeness of the cabin. While we did not utilize the sauna or the gazebo, both were impressive. The owners care about this place and it shows!

Wonderful North Shore Cozy Cabin
My wife and I had a great week at the Palisades cabin. We enjoyed the decks, the views, the awesome gazebo, and the wood-fired sauna. The cabin has everything you need, so no worries on that front. The location is great - we walked every morning on different state park trails a short drive from the cabin. Definitely 5 stars.

Best cabin on North Shore
For years I have taken my 3 best friends (now all in our 70s) for a few days stay in a cabin on Lake Superior. This log cabin is the absolute best. The cabin itself is beautifully build with very large logs and well maintained throughout. The setting is awesome with stunning views of the lake and the palisades. Top class!

Unparalleled View
3rd or 4th time here. Love the log cabin, love the view, love the wood stove in the cabin - love both decks, the sauna, the Gazebo, the very functional kitchen, Just love sitting on the deck and watching the morning sunrise. Enjoy being in the Gazebo watching a storm rolling in (loved the umbrella to get us to the Gazebo). It’s so private outside, and comfy inside. We love that it is close to so many parks and trails. The communication from the owners is responsive and caring. We will go back again!!!

Sweet cabin stay
This was a return visit for us. 2 adults and a dog. Love the charming log cabin and location. Especially grateful we can bring our dog. Cabin is small but perfect in every way. Excellent use of space. Love the 2 decks and that there was a tie out available for our dog friend. The sunrises are so magical over the lake. We hope to return again.

The perfect peaceful getaway!
What a wonderful cozy cabin! Thank you Sarah for sharing it! Our family enjoyed the indoor woodstove and sauna! The views day and night were amazing. The cabin has all the necessities for enjoying home cooked meals. We appreciated the detailed instructions on the use of wood stove and sauna. Sarah and her husband pay attention to detail and obviously love this cabin! We enjoyed hikes in Tettegouche and Gooseberry falls state parks. The cabin is secluded and peaceful. Amazing stay
The cabin was perfect. Perfect size for me and my partner; the couch was comfy; the kitchen was fully stocked and made it easy for us to cook almost all our meals. The property is beautiful. The location allows easy access to nearby state parks, cafes, and grocery stores. I only wish we were there in the summer to take advantage of having the windows open and listening to the lake.

The Perfect Getaway
We loved everything about this property and cabin! In addition to incredible views and peaceful privacy, the cabin was well-equipped for cooking, cozy fires, and relaxation. It was super clean, uncluttered, and comfortable, and very close to great places to explore including Palisade Head, Tettegouche State Park, and Black Beach. The moonrises and sunrises over Superior were spectacular, too. We will definitely return to this property again!

About the host

Hosted by Sarah Stevenson

Host profile image
Mark and Sarah own the cabin. They moved to the Twin Cities in 2000, and frequently spent time "up north." Sarah's parents have owned a vacation home in Silver Bay for many years. This vacation home served as a launching pad for Mark and Sarah to visit the North Shore. In 2011, Mark and Sarah purchased this cabin. They love spending time at the cabin with their two sons. The quiet cabin in the woods is always a welcome retreat.

Why they chose this property

The north shore of Lake Superior, particularly the stretch along Highway 61 from Duluth to Grand Marais has something for everyone. Silver Bay, which is in right in the middle of this beautiful stretch, is a great place to enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Superior and to visit the many Minnesota State Parks in the area.

What makes this property unique

We enjoy everything we describe on our property listing, especially the beautiful views from log cabin. The area is quiet and relaxing and also provides us with opportunities to venture out and explore a wide variety of destinations along the beautiful North Shore!
