About this property

National Historic home w/ Serene & Quiet Setting

Originally founded in the 1600's, Abington Farm, a.k.a Abbington Manor & Stables, is a historic home and stables in Crownsville, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States.

Abbington Manor's East Wing (The East Wing is the left side of the residence in the main picture) overlooks the surrounding pastures and horses of Abbington Stables. A small pond rests to the east of the home. From the calls of the cardinals, blujays, goats, and chickens in the morning to the silence of deer and foxes in the evening, this property offers a serenity and quiet not typically found this close to so many metropolitan centers.

Abbington's stately but relaxed setting offers a get away from the business of life. If you decide to enjoy any of the local amenities of DC, Annapolis, or Baltimore, then take advantage of the fact that you're only a short drive to most anywhere you want to go.

Come and enjoy what so many others over the centuries have come to enjoy about Abbington, yet be centrally located to so much:

- 15 minutes from Baltimore/Washtington International Airport.
- 20 minutes from Ft. Meade.
- 30 Minutes to Baltimore's waterfront harbor.
- 15 minutes to Annapolis
- 25 minutes to Washington DC.
- Within an hour of 3 major airports (BWI, Reagan National, Dulles).

* As of March 2021, we've updated the residence with a 3 stage commercial water filtration system!

Fantastic Retreat

We were visiting our son at the Naval Academy. It was about a 25 minute drive in. The home was LOVELY and cozy. The surrounding area of the home was peaceful and beautiful. My favorite was the stock of bathroom towels and wash clothes in case we needed it, which we did. They had the shower stocked with soap, shampoo and conditioner. The beds were comfortable, home was very clean, air conditioner worked great. Kitchen is small, but very useable. We made a full pasta dinner with homemade sauce and made breakfast every day. It was very private and you would never know someone else was on the property. We stayed 4 days and overall, it was fantastic.

Up en downs

Our stay was very interesting. The house was beautiful. The environmetn was green, lots of birds and wide. Gave you een feeling of space. The owners are attent and reacted quickly on a request from us. After a view days we were commanded not to smoke on the entire property. We were unaware this was not allowed, because usually the non smoking policy concerns the inside of the house. The way we were addressed, did not make us happy and we decided to ask for a converation the next day, about the style of conversation. Happely the owner came by himself the next day and we had a good conversation. There was a better understanding after this. The rest of our stay was quiet in harmony and we had a great time with our family and friends. The coffee machine was great. The kitchen was not wel equiped and the stove was not horizontal, so it was a kind of struggle to cook. I used spoons to level the cooking pots. We were happy with the internet, television, washing machine and dryer.

We didn’t want to leave!

We had the best time at Abbington! The house was pristine when we arrived and so beautifully decorated. The house had everything we needed and so many towels- a real bonus for our crew! The owners and family are so lovely and we enjoyed getting to know them. The property is heavenly! Morning coffee on the front porch was our favorite and our girls loved swinging on the swing, running in the front yard, and spotting the geese and horses. The location was perfect for us and great for kids! Close to stores and restaurants and a shorty trip to DC and Baltimore. We were so sad to leave but look forward to visiting again! Thank you for such a lovely stay!

Sufficient place for short stay

This property was clean and located on a quiet setting. I would recommend this place for no more than a few days. If you plan on utilizing the property, this place is not ideal. The owners reside on the property. We felt restricted to our wing and felt like we were being watched the whole time. Our stay was not relaxing because the owner repeatedly emailed us because we had one person over the maximum persons, which happened to be a child. The owner used such words as ‘violated’ and ‘tracking’.

lovely

Staying at Abbington for USNA commissioning week was a great decision for our family. It provided a calmness and the perfect recharge between the week’s events. We enjoyed several lovely meals on the very peaceful front porch with the view of horses and an expanse of God’s beautiful creation. A tremendous thank YOU from the DiPaolo family and blessings to the lovely Buehlars. You made a special week all the more memorable.

Country stay with suburban convenience

This was such a lovely location where we felt far away in the country rolling hills. Yet just 2 min around the corner was all the convenience of Panera and grocery stores! We loved being so close to our family, and also able to entertain friends on the patio. Also, I was traveling with my older mother and having the bedroom on the first floor was perfect with minimal steps.

Beautiful Views and Gorgeous Surroundings

What an absolutely perfect stay. Situated in the rolling hills of the Maryland countryside, we couldn't have asked for a more peaceful and beautiful place to spend the better part of a week. Aaron and Angela are wonderful hosts and outfitted our beautiful apartment with everything we could possibly need. We'll definitely be back!

Excellent place! Would definitely stay again.

Check-in was easy, just park and enter your code to enter. This place has everything you need and more when staying away from home. Good water pressure, lots of hot water, soft close toilet seats, plenty of towels, extra blankets, bathtub and shower combo, multiple coffee options). We couldn't have asked for a more comfortable stay on our trip. And it's so conveniently located to shops (Target is just a short drive away) and food (so many great places to eat). The house was quiet and watching the horses graze was peaceful. We would definitely stay here again instead of staying in DC.

Refreshing, Scenic, Perfect Stay

I can't say enough about this property. Our stay was 8 days during Commissioning Week. Everything was perfect - the house was very clean and came equipped with all that we needed, from the Keurig coffee maker to wine glasses and plenty of toiletries, soaps and towels. The hosts even left a few small touches for us - fresh flowers throughout the house, and a small box full of snacks. The bed and ceiling fan in the master BR felt perfect. We made use of the washer and dryer which was nice to have. The kitchen and living room suited us nicely. (For the most part it was just my husband and I along with our son. We also had a couple guests over for a cocktail.) It was a comfortable stay. But I think the biggest takeaway for us was the R&R that we unexpectedly experienced. Our favorite place was the expansive front porch where we sat in the Adirondack chairs every morning and leisurely sipped our coffee while watching the horses, geese and other wildlife. And gazed at the beautiful scenic woods and hills. It was "life giving". The property is secluded, but close enough to anything you could want - about 8 minutes away from a great grocery store, and about18 minutes from Annapolis. The hosts gave us our privacy, but we did get to meet and chat with them. Wonderful family. I highly recommend this property!

Fabulous vista!

The apartment is small, but very well organized, with two queens and a sofa twin. Too bad we weren’t allowed to pet the horses or give them a carrot or apple. For runners there’s a great trail a mile away that should be mentioned. We looked for a beach but they were either private or closed—if one is open, please let visitors know about it. Thanks for a great place to come back to!

Wonderful

We had a great time staying at "Heartland(TV show on Netflix)" for a 11 night stay to visit our son. The house is located on a wonderful horse property but close to DC, Annapolis and Baltimore for day trips. Our mornings started with coffee on the back porch enjoying the view and watching the horses. Afternoons and evenings were spent day tripping and eating out with our son. Many restaurants and places to go 10-50 minutes drive. The bed is comfortable and kitchen stocked for use if cooking. The apartment had flowers, coffee pods and snacks for us upon arrival. The owners are very responsive and nice people.

Grandbaby time

I spent over 6 weeks here while I helped to watch my new grandbaby until she started daycare. It was fantastic. The property is perfect for a couple. The location is awesome and the setting spectacular. I went for many walks and enjoyed seeing all of the beautiful horses around. The hosts and their boys are great. Angela and Aaron were very patient working with me early on with my dates as my timing was dependent on many factors. Many places on the property to sit and relax and enjoy the sceneey. The front porch view is wonderful. Highly recommend and plan to return.

Beautiful property and great old charm

We booked last minute after another property canceled on us. I'm glad we ended up here after all. The setting is very relaxing and there was plenty of space for us and our kids. We did have an issue with the water which the owners were very apologetic about. Overall we had a great stay!

About the host

Host profile image
We've been blessed to be able to take care of such a unique, historic and beautiful property. We, along with our boys, love Abbington and believe you will too.

Why they chose this property

After receiving a Charter from King Charles I, Lord Baltimore (who married Anne Arundal) gifted the property of Abington to John Gaither of local fame and notoriety (founder of Gaithersburg). The property was given to Gaither around 1640 by Lord Baltimore. The house sits facing the main road which was once an Indian trail through the region. The main house is a 2 ¹⁄₂-story frame, side-passage, double-pile house with additions on both gable ends. The main block dates from about 1840. Steps in the cellar date back all the way to the early 1600's! On the properties are several outbuildings, including a stone and frame ice house, a frame, brick, and stone springhouse/dairy, a frame privy, chicken house, tool shed, a corncrib, a large, elaborate frame stable; and a frame tenant house. Abbington is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Maryland Historic Trust.
