The cabin is beautiful, spacious, and modern. We loved the huge windows, that let in the natural light, and gave wonderful views of the forest. The back deck was perfect for grilling and hanging out on in the evening. We definitely will rent this property again.
Great neo cabin surrounded by lush woods, but not so far from civilization. Nice layout for a small group. Modern conveniences and just what was needed for our week away.
Beautifully designed house - simplistic, clean, peaceful. High end nets on the windows/sliding doors to keep out any bugs were a plus. We stayed during a heat wave and the floor fans helped. Beds were very comfortable and supportive. Water pressure and hot water completely normal / not an issue at all. Kitchen was fully stocked. Fast WiFi. The beautiful tall trees surrounding the house made us feel like we were staying in the middle of a forest - relaxing vibe that really helped us to unplug. Thank you to Maria for a wonderful stay.
Incredibly well designed property. Love the large windows which makes you feel like you are in nature when you are indoors. Close to cool restaurants, Woodstock, and Bread Alone with maybe the best brick oven pizza ever. Maria was super responsive. Thank you for an amazing stay!
Our time at the modern forest retreat was outstanding. We stayed for a week in May and had friends join for a few days. It is perfect for two couples with separate bedrooms and bathrooms and central common spaces for cooking, relaxing and enjoying beautiful views. The start of our trip had a little chill so we enjoyed the indoor wood stove which was perfect to cozy the place- plenty of cut firewood and kindling made this a breeze. As the week warmed we also got to enjoy the incredible large screen doors to open up and welcome cool breezes and the sounds of the creek and birds. Internet access was perfect and we enjoyed the projector TV to stream some shows. House is well stocked with everything you need for cooking, linens and towels. Was perfectly cleaned and functional. Loved the property- very secluded yet close to several restaurants, shops and breweries. Enjoyed the fire pit and the fabulous deck spaces. We also grilled on the outdoor grill. Maria was a joy to work with, incredibly informative and responsive to all inquiries. Can’t say enough how much we loved this property and our relaxing time there.
We had an amazing 2-week stay at Maria's home - we absolutely loved its clean and minimalist aesthetic and comfort, the semi-rural setting with surrounding forests and streams, and proximity to neighboring towns like Phoenicia and Woodstock. The home was well stocked with state of the art appliances and conveniences, and to top if off Maria was highly responsive throughout our stay whenever we had any questions. We would love to do it all over again hopefully soon!
We had an amazing stay. We spent a lot of time inside and outside of this beautiful house cooking, playing games, and relaxing. We also went hiking, walking around the reservoir, and visited the Storm King Art Center. The location is convenient to restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores. We really enjoyed the property. Would love to stay there again.
This home was terrific. The beds were comfortable, the common areas were well-furnished and thoughtfully planned, and the kitchen had ALL the items we need to cook and enjoy our stay. The appliances are top notch and worked well, too. The host generously provided firewood and the tools to enjoy the wood burning stove and there were plenty of towels, blankets, pillows, etc. The wifi was also first rate!
The views from the house are wonderful. We were there at the peak of fall and the leaves were changing color; the large windows and walks of sliding doors made it seem like we were in a tree house. Truly beautiful.
Finally, the location is great. There is a small town and good grocery store just 8 minutes drive, plus two really nice farm "stands" that sold delicious local produce, cheeses, and meats.
Beautiful, light, open, airy - incredibly clever design. We’ve rented many houses, especially in the Woodstock area, and this was easily our favorite. If I were to choose a house to want to own as my country (or permanent) home, this would be it.
Extremely well stocked. We were totally comfortable. The privacy is a major asset, and the area is beautiful. Owner/architect was immediately responsive to any questions. Please ignore this review now, so that we can easily rent again!
Exceptionally beautiful rustic-meets-modern home on a peaceful, wooded lot between Woodstock and Phoenicia. All the details are in place in this thoughtfully designed and furnished home. Comfortable lounging spaces, a well-equipped kitchen, a simple fire pit for s’mores. The bedrooms are located at opposite sides of the house, which could work equally well for two couples traveling together as it did for our family of four. The cozy loft was great for movies and games, and could sleep extra kids if needed. And we loved eating and lounging outdoors during the evening among the trees on the back deck.
The host was great with communication in general and especially during a huge storm that disrupted the power supply. The solar panels kept the WiFi, fridge, lights, and select outlets going!
There’s so much to do outdoors in the surrounding area - walks and hikes for all abilities. Ten mins to Phoenicia and the great Phoenicia diner, 20 to Woodstock, kids had fun picnicking with the chickens at the Bread Alone in Boiceville.
Lack of curtains meant our 3-yr-old got us out of bed too early a couple of times. While it’s nice to wake up and see the trees, definitely take a sleep mask if you’re sensitive to light. The weather in the area was quite variable and the house did get a bit hot a couple of times during our stay the first week of August... other times we were digging out our sweaters.
Overall we love this amazing home and will go back as soon as we can!
This property was more than the pictures showed. Lovely, quiet, tranquil and private. We felt like we were in a tree house. The house is well appointed and has everything that you need. The furniture is comfortable and the beds were just right. Maria the owner was a dream to deal with. A small piece of paradise at such a difficult moment in time.
We had the best time after 3 months of lockdown at this beautiful property. It was very clean and the kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed. The kids enjoyed watching movies on the projector in the living room and also roasting s’mores. We can’t wait to return back to this house.
We absolutely loved this house. It was perfect for my husband and two daughters. We took lots of walks and cooked many meals which had very appliance and utensil you could need. We would definitely hope to rent this property again!
This property is a gem. The house is clean, modern with all the amenities you need. Our kids loved the stream out back and watching movies on the projector. Lots of great hikes nearby. We recommend the new Rail Trail. Maria is very responsive and helpful with any questions.
We absolutely adored our stay! The house is just beautiful and we felt so connected with the nature all around us. We enjoyed cooking brunches and dinners with the fully stocked kitchen with produce from the markets just a short drive away. We enjoyed the projector and the fire pit and the overall relaxation and inspiration! We did an incredible hike near by in Phoenicia called TanBark Trail. And we are so grateful to the design and sustainability of the house and property! Can’t wait to come back!!!!
Stunning property with an exquisitely designed and built modern cabin. Amazing space, finishes, detailing, appliances, and fixtures. The property is close to plenty of attractions and activities. A highly recommended place to stay.
Loved the privacy and large lot size! Especially enjoyed the outdoor grill and fire pit! No issues with the lack of AC during one of the hottest weeks of the summer. Great location with easy access to hiking, biking, shops and restaurants! 🤩
The Modern Forest retreat on Mt Tremper is simply magical. Care has been taken to every single detail in this beautiful home. Our party of four plus one toddler had a super comfortable stay. Waking up to the forest trees was magical, cooking big meals was a blast, the fire pit under the stars was perfect and the home was beyond comfortable and cozy. We can't wait to visit again!

Beautifully designed refuge in an idyllic wood.
This gorgeous, spacious new house feels both modern and cozy. A series of giant glass sliding doors run along the double-height living area, affording a panoramic view of the woods all round; trees come right up to the building-length, wood-slatted decks on either side, which are great for gathering, grilling, or just hanging out. Privacy has been well considered, with bedrooms at either end of the large, expansive space. Interiors feel peaceful and have a light, wood-paneled, almost Scandinavian stylishness. Inside, everything from sofas to the state-of-the-art kitchen has been well designed and tastefully curated, as if Dia Art Foundation had decided to build and furnish a modernist chalet. Well situated; close to local natural attractions. A restorative, nourishing, ultra-comfortable experience.

Perched in the Woods
The house is a beautiful space perched in the woods. It feels like camping but with all the comforts of home. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed a few of the high tech touches like the induction range. Great place to spend a weekend.

About the host
Hosted by Maria
We are NY architects who have enjoyed hiking and camping in the area for years. We decided to develop a vacant lot to act as a base for our outdoor activities and a place to entertain our less adventurous family and friends!
Why they chose this property
Our goal with this property was to design and build a sustainable house which could be a model for future projects. This house is well insulated and utilizes triple and double glazed windows. Solar panels offset the low yearly electric demand of the house. Our hope was to maintain the natural beauty of the site by saving as many of the existing trees. The trees offer a nice mix of pines, beech, oak, etc. A small creek runs through the property, providing lovely sound and a spot to look for tadpoles and frogs.
What makes this property unique
The connection to the Forest is truly special at our house. The house is meant to be a quiet backdrop for restorative time away from work or school, a chance to reset.
