Unpleasant - Toilet Paper not provided - But Lots of Cash is Expected
My husband and two adult daughters stayed for 2 days in Veronique's one-room studio. Frankly, it was an all around painful experience.
Before we came, there was a lot of back and forth via the HomeAway site. Veronique does not speak English and I do not speak French which made fuzzy things even more complicated to sort out..
Confusing Financial Arrangements
The listing was not clear about additional costs and methods of payment.
Extra people: It says that it accommodates 4 people. Then, via email, I learned that after just 2 people, there are extra charges per person per night.
Cleaning Fee: It does not say there is a cleaning fee, but via email I learn that there is a cleaning fee which is due as cash upon arrival.
Big Cash Deposit: It does say online that there is a hefty refundable damage deposit. What is DOESN'T say is that you are expected to hand over that hefty amount "in cash or check" to the hosts upon meeting them -- this handoff of cash is not done electronically.
"Cash or Check" - No Just Cash: The refundable damage deposit was to handed over upon arrival in "cash or check" -- but upon meeting the host, she said she would not take my check for the damage deposit since it is not from a French Bank. We had to make a mad scramble to come up with a HUGE amount of cash to people we had never met before. Since there were only 2 other reviews for the place, I was not entirely confident about the whole process and getting the deposit back.
Toilet Paper "Not Included: - There was 1/4 of a roll of toilet paper in the studio... in asking the host about toilet paper, she replied that she does not provide toilet paper. That was certainly a first.
Cleaning Fee - But You Take Out Trash -- When the host returned to inspect the place for damage, she expressed irritation that we had loaded the 8 or so glasses in the dishwasher -- but not run it. We had consolidated and bagged our small amount of trash, but she also wanted us to take it out to the dumpster.... the point of a cleaning fee???
The Studio - Adequate. Clean. Beds Hard. Short on hot water.
Be prepared for a different experience here... and bring your own toilet paper.
