Cedar Cliff Retreat - Stunning 1920's Craftsman on Lake Superior Shore

Cedar Cliff is located on a dead-end road that runs along the Lake Superior shore. From the moment you walk through the doors of this incredible home, you will feel transformed.

The magnificent great room with a massive Carlton Peak fireplace has an antique dining room table that seats 12 and a drop-leaf English table that can seat 6 more. Two large screened-in porches flank this room and the windows that run its length have window seats for bird watching and reading or lake gazing. French doors in the middle open to the stairway that leads down to the water. The north shore is known for its craggy rocks and vistas and our shoreline offers a private experience of this magnificent place.

Fabulous location for a large group
Such a beautiful place to stay, especially for larger groups. We come back every year because of the incredible view and the big stone fire place and the ability to sit our entire group together for dinner and give each couple their own room.

Wedding stay
We stayed at this property for 4 days and it was perfect, the view is amazing, it’s bigger in person than what the pictures show. it was very spacious, the campfire area was beautiful, its very quiet but we did have a stranger walk up on the property though so make sure you are locking the doors!

Beautiful Retreat!
We were a group of 11 ladies who’ve been visiting the north shore for decades. This was our first stay at Cedar Cliff and we thoroughly enjoyed the place. We utilized the large dining table morning and night. There are plenty of dishes, utensils, cookware and bedding. We brought an extra coffee maker since we had a larger group. We also enjoyed both screen porches, large living room and direct access to the lake. Getting down the wood stairs to the fire pit/lake was difficult for some of our older ladies but the others enjoyed sitting at the lake’s edge. It’s especially beautiful at sunrise. We were comfortable in the numerous beds and bedrooms. We split showers between evening and night since there are only two. This property is just a few miles from Lutsen Mt and maybe 20-25 min from Grand Marais. We will be staying here in the future! Beautiful property and amazing home!

On Golden Pond perfect house
Cedar Cliff is a charming home from another time. Great attention has been paid to details...the furniture, the lamps, the well-organized and furnished kitchen. The two screened porches were great for relaxing and reading. The views of the lake were suburb! We had a red full moon and red rising sun thanks to the haze. They were spectacular. And, the location, in Lutsen was perfect for hikes on all the rivers.

Best Gem on the North Shore to Stay!
We always enjoy coming to Cedar Cliff for our annual gathering. This was our 8th time here in the past 10 years. Never grows old (and never do we!). The place is so charming and spacious for our large group of friends. We designate one of the porches for our jigsaw puzzle that we work on and the other porch for reading and relaxation. So great that we can all eat around the large table. The place is stocked with plenty of dishes and cookware. We will definitely be back.

Lovely property. Room for all. It is however, very dark inside . We cooked dinner each day for 12. The oven would not stay lit after the first few days of our stay, so we improvised. I was not able to bake the huge box of brownie mix! We did enjoy the space. Thank you!

Beautiful setting
Our family of 12 enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cottage to celebrate birthdays. The setting right on the shore of Lake Superior can’t be beat. The fire pit is fabulous and we all enjoyed exploring down on the rocks and waterfalls. Enjoyed cooking together, sharing meals & playing games at the fabulous large dining table. What a fun weekend we had.

Weekend away
My now wife and I got married at Gooseberry Falls State Park, and stayed at the Cedar Cliff Retreat with our closest friends and family over the wedding weekend. It's the perfect place to showcase the north shore. We had friends visiting from Argentina to Alaska, and all were blown away by the beauty of the house and the surrounding area. The house is well equipped for a large group. There are plenty of plates, cups, utensils, towels, a large fridge, oven, cabinet space, etc. There are instruments in the closet that were enjoyed by a few guests. It really amplified the vibes for the weekend :) The fire pit by the water is deluxe, and the rocky shore has some great spots to jump in! The listing says events allowed - make sure to notify the property owner if you plan to have an event! After a little confusion and explaining to the local property manager, the property owner was very understanding and everything turned out ok! I want to say thank you to both for understanding. Our wedding weekend was absolutely perfect. The Cedar Cliff Retreat is a space that makes you slow down and connect with those around you. The main focus is the large, central gathering space with plenty of seating. Sitting around, laughing, and catching up with old friends is really what you are supposed to be doing. It was a weekend to celebrate love, and it wouldn't have been possible without the Cedar Cliff Retreat. Thank you again.

Perfect Stay
I cannot be more happy with our stay. We rented Cedar Cliff as a smaller alternative for our wedding. The space was large and accommodated all our guests and wedding dinner. The large table in the Grand Room was PERFECT! The location on the cliffs was amazing for our ceremony and photos. Perfect Day. If we have a question, the hosts were super responsive to all our needs. Will be back for sure!

Beautiful home for a large group!
We rented this home to celebrate our parents 50th wedding anniversary. There were 15 of us, ranging from ages 14-69. The house provided most of what we needed for our stay... a bed for everyone and multiple bathrooms. The house stays true to its age and authenticity, meaning little to no updates, and leans more towards the "rustic" side. (No dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc, small bathrooms, etc... which was fine by us.) If you want to keep a fire going, be sure to purchase and/or bring lots of firewood. We loved the lake views and the large family gathering rooms! No need to bring bottled water, as the well water is delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed the location, size, character, and comfort of this beautiful home!

Our family of 8 had a wonderful stay at this Lake Superior gem. The location is incredible. Everything we needed was stocked and ready to go. We enjoyed the 'bones' of this 1930's era house. Grateful to have had a great experience that provided memories for decades.

About the host

Hosted by Kathy

Host profile image
My name is Kathy and I have a boutique in Minneapols where we live. Doug is a musician and a software engineer. We have 5 children and 5 grandchildren . We enjoy being involved in the care and maintenence of Cedar Cliff and watching it bring such pleasure to its visitors.

Why they chose this property

Doug and I love the North Shore and wanted to share the magic with others and this was the perfect way to do it! We love the community and wanted to help support the local economy and bring more awareness of this incredible wilderness in our own back yard. We chose this large historic Craftsman because we love the quality and simplicity of the architecture and the ability to house large groups comfortably and most of all because we love the Lake! Being on a dead end road is a big plus and the location makes it easy to get to outdoor activies , shops and restaurants.

What makes this property unique

Cedar Cliff offers a truly unique North Shore experience. You have an entire house that was on the historic homes tour with an amazing Carlton Peak fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen, organic coffee, tea and cocoa, wonderful bedding and quilts plus lots of character and lots of privacy.

We have hosted family reunions, yoga retreats, weddings, birthday celebrations, craft weekends, girlfriends weekends and workshops to name a few.

The Great Room is perfect for the group activities and the bedrooms are set to the back of the house for more peaceful quiet time. The two large screened porches give even more great relaxing lake time opportunities and you can even sleep out there on an air bed if you want!

We are a Green facility and use recycled and environmentally friendly products and high quality natural fibers in our linens, towels and rugs.

The biggest plus, of course, is the Lake. The feeling you get looking out over that vast expanse of water just has to be experienced.
