About this property

Renovated Medieval House at the Foot of Mont. Ste. Victoire

Puyloubier is the perfect base to explore Provence and the Cote D'Azur. Our house is less than an hour from beaches and seaside villages, 20 min. from the beautiful cultural hub of Aix en Provence, close to countless vineyards, hilltop villages and hiking trails and cycling routes, and 40 minutes from the lively metropolis of Marseille. It benefits from the spectacular scenery and quiet atmosphere of a village on the side of one of the most picturesque mountains in France, without sacrificing access to cultural, outdoors, gastronomic and other attractions.

Nestled at the foot of Mont. Ste. Victoire, 20 kilometers east of Aix-en-Provence is the picturesque village of Puyloubier. It is just large enough to sustain a grocery store, children's playground and sports fields, primary school, post office, cafe, restaurant, bakery, and variety store, and is home to the award-winning local Cave Cooperative, selling wonderful and very inexpensive wine. From the house, visitors can walk up the mountain immortalized in the paintings of Paul Cezanne.

The Non-Smoking house is a traditional 'maison de village' and the foundation dates back to medieval times. The interior of the house combines traditional style with modern amenities. The house comprises five rooms and two bathrooms: the updated kitchen/dining room and renovated bathroom (with a shower but no tub), and the second full bathroom, the master bedroom with a queen bed, and second bedroom with single and double beds, as well as the comfortable queen sofa bed in the living room, which opens out onto the large terrace upstairs which is shared with the house next door. Each house has a table and chairs for outdoor dining, surrounded by plants and lovely views. The house sleeps five comfortably, 7 in a pinch. We have a bed and highchair for a baby/toddler as well as a stair guard. The main room features a dishwasher, clothes washer, kitchen counter, dining room table, six chairs and easy chairs. A modern gas stove and North American-style refrigerator complete these rooms. The stone sink in the house is centuries old!

Puyloubier is close to amenities of every kind, from Mediterranean Beaches to the cultural, market and shopping activities in Aix en Provence and Nice. The region is rich in cultural and outdoors activities, hosting many galleries, music festivals and theatres, as well as being a centre for hiking, mountaineering, cycling, and swimming. There are several children's amusement parks and adventure playgrounds, as well as beaches and pools for children of all ages. Historical and religious sites of interest abound locally, but perhaps most arresting are the beautiful landscapes which have attracted artists from Van Gogh and Picasso to the Canadian Group of Seven, who stayed in a house a few miles away.

This house was the most wonderful place to spend a week enjoying the incredible country town of Puyloubier, and the other towns surrounding Aix-En-Provence. We spent our days wandering through the forest, vineyards, and fields close by the house, and our evenings cozied up around the dinner table enjoying French food and bread from the local boulangerie. The amenities in the house were more than we could have hoped for--wonderfully furnished rooms, big comfy beds, everything in the kitchen we could possibly need. We felt spoiled to spend a relaxing week in such a beautiful house which felt delightfully like home. We cannot wait to return to Puyloubier!

Excellent Location & Great Village!

The location of the Rue de la Paix rental was excellent. It is a comfortable home with a well-stocked kitchen and a fabulous view of the entire valley from the terrasse. The village is quaint and inviting. There are two boulangeries, a cave and all of the necessities in the village. Parking is easy and the local people are very friendly. The property is especially well-suited for a family with teenagers (wi-fi rocks). The local property tenders are very nice and available, should one have a need. There is a local bar/restaurant that is very enjoyable but if you are a “Red Guide” fan there’s also a Michelin rated restaurant in the village. The house is close to the motorway, which makes day trips to Monte Sainte Victoire, Cassis, the Calanques, St. Tropez, Aix, Marseilles and other great haunts easy. This property is well suited for the agile as there are several levels.

Vielen Dank!

So beautiful, it inspired us to get married!

My now-husband and I stayed at Beth and Tony’s home in Puyloubier for a week in May of 2016. Her home is warm, cozy, and beautifully decorated, with a well-equipped kitchen for cooking and comfortable bedrooms. The rooftop terrace is particularly nice for outdoor dining (I think we ate nearly every meal out there). The village of Puyloubier is the perfect size for exploring in a day, picturesque and charming without being at all touristic. The house is located centrally, right near the small grocery, a bakery, and a cafe. The nearby village of boasts a fantastic market, perfect for buying fresh bread, fruits, and vegetables, and the locally made wine is a good value for the money. If you are interested in seeing lavender fields, Pulyoubier is a good location for day trips into lavender country. Not only were Beth and Tony excellent hosts and great at communicating, the local caretaker, Eric, was friendly and helpful without being intrusive. A memorable vacation was made even better by having such a lovely home base. And if you're looking for romance, you may end up like us: so inspired by your surroundings that you decide to get married!

Perfekte Lage

In 50 m Entfernung.

Wonderful provence stay - would recommend

We used this house in this typical provencale village as a base for 5 weeks in April. Firstly Beth and Tony, the owners, were wonderful to communicate with. We loved the location, the house was well equipped, excellent wifi and plenty of room for us as a couple. English speaking couple available to help with any issues - though none arose. We had family and friends visit us for weekends from England, which worked well. The local village was really friendly, a little shop, bar and restaurant. And it was easy to get to Aix-En-Provence by the regular bus, and we loved spending time in its pretty streets and lunching in squares and the markets. There is a very nice cafe in the square but it didn't open for food until towards the end of our stay around 7th of May. The house itself is really well equipped, especially the kitchen, and feels like a home. The only reason it wasn't a five star is that the shower/bathroom situation gets a little pressed with four adults in the house, and the stairs and living area are awkward if you aren't mobile or are tall, couple of banged heads. It worked really well for us though as a couple with occasional guests. Favourite restaurants nearby - Auberge Des Banettes, looks like a nondescript place on the side of the road on way to Aix, but inside has most beautiful terrace view and really great, exceptional value french menus - we went every week! Trips to Arles, Marseille, Nimes, and the nearby St Maximin were just a few of the other spots we tried. You'll never get bored of the view of the mountain and driving through the vineyards, or drinking the terrific rose wine from the cave cooperative across the road. We would definitely go back.

Charming in Provence

Set in a non-touristy charming little village at the foot of the spectacular Mont Sainte Victoire, this homey, three-level villa felt like a warm family embrace to our family of four. Owners, Beth and Tony really want their guests to enjoy their stay and it shows. This was our families' third stay with hosts Beth and Tony. We enjoyed a meal with Beth and Tony upon our arrival! This cozy villa has everything one needs as well as a terrace with a barbecue outdoor table and chairs and a spectacular view of the mountain. Eric, the local person who looks after the house, is readily available if needed. Beth and Tony ensure their guests have lots of information about the area and even went and checked out vegetarian restaurants in the area for our vegetarian daughter! Their two villas are perfectly situated for day trips in all directions for sites in Provence. We visited Nice, Cannes, St. Paul de Vence, L'Isle sur la Sorque, the Gorge, Chateau des Baux, Avignon, Arles and Aix en Provence (20 minutes away) several times. There is so much to see and do from here. Access to the Mediterranean is quick and easy and the area is rich with hiking trails. We were delighted to discover a new high end spectacular restaurant, Relais de Saint Ser on the outskirts of Puyloubier. We also discovered a Michelin star restaurant about 15 minutes away. Looking forward to our fourth visit!

Beauty in Provence

We spent three months and are coming back for more to this delightful home in the wonderful village of Puyloubier. The home is perfectly set up with everything needed, just like being at home. The owners really care that your vacation is everything you expect. The village is charming, surrounded by vineyards and amazing walking trails.

A delight in Provence

What a delightful home in a beautiful part of the world. Our family of 4 spent three weeks in this gorgeous house. The space is well-renovated and thoughtfully equipped. We felt well-informed and welcomed to use the house as our own. The communication with Beth before, during and after our stay was exceptional - it makes such a difference to know you can make contact as needed. Friends in the village are also on hand for any issues as they arise - not that we had any, but reassuring to know they were there. This home is ideally placed for discovering Provence. Puyloubier itself is a lovely little village, there are so many places to visit nearby and many others again just an hour away. We are so happy we found this gem and that Beth was able to accommodate us. Thank you Beth, a very special family time was spent in your home.

Great for family french immersion year abroad, extended stay

Our family of 5 (kids aged 7,9,11) spent a wonderful school year in Puyloubier. We lived in the Pierre Jacquemet house from August 2013 to July 2014. The house is in a great location and is just a 2 minute walk to the bakeries, cafe, store, post office, bank machine, playground and elementary school. Puyloubier is a very welcoming village in a beautiful setting surrounded by vineyards and located at the foot of Sainte Victoire. A great Southern France experience for the whole family. The house has a great terrace with BBQ, a nice main bathroom and a lovely family room. It is well equipped and furnished which is hugely convenient for an easy extended stay. The local caretakers, Melina and Eric, are great people who are extremely welcoming and professional. Beth and Tony are great landlords. All around a great family experience.

Perfect Provencal Vacation Spot

My husband and I rented this lovely home in the heart of Puyloubier for one month...the hot one. On our first night we sat out on the rooftop terrace, washed in the warm summer breeze, looking at the panoramic view of the nearby vineyards and the spectacular Mount St. Victoire mountain-range. Step out the door and walk up the village stairs to find the footpath to hikes and walks up and across the Mt. St. Victoire plateau. A cyclist's dream, the village sits in the middle of a pass-through for the many cyclists testing their medal on the narrow roads winding through and between the gorgeous rural villages. There are two patisseries where you can get your daily fresh carbs, and delicious treats as well as fresh sandwiches. Or run down the street (50 yards) to the local village grocery store to grab everything you need for a lovely meal at home on the terrace. The village has its own wine co-op where you can purchase the local wines at very low prices and absolutely wonderful. The village in the summer presents weekly live theatrical and music performances and concerts. You will be welcomed by this community. The location of this village is perfect. 15 minutes from Aix en Provence, an incredibly lively, hip, and historic metropolitan city hub, where the painter Paul Cezanne and endless others are celebrated. We enjoyed several wine tastings at local vineyards and dined at the two local cafes; one casual, family-friendly (Cafe St Victoire) where we often dined out in the central village square; the other (Les Sarments) still casual but more elegant, expensive, and subdued...and a treat. Marseille, the most spectacular port city and the oldest in France, is only 35 minutes away (as is the nearest airport). You need more than one full day to explore the neighborhoods, museums, dining opportunities, and music scene. We had the unique pleasure of meeting the owners during our last week, and as a result of the evenings on the terrace, have come to know, shared meals, and of course, good wine. The house is comfortable and situated with everything you'll need. (Remember, the French do not use clothes dryers---because they, like so many others, are far more eco-friendly than the U.S.) but we loved having our clothes line dried by the sweet, Provencal air. Don't hesitate. Go to Puyloubier. Enjoy it and then start planning on your next trip back, as we do.

Ideal Setting, Ideal Home Base, Ideal Experience

Very easy to find in the unbelievably charming Provençale village of Puyloubier, this rental offers what no hotel can: an genuinely slowly-paced escape from one's hectic life at home. A ten minute bike ride from a handful of wineries producing bone-dry rosé; fig trees that dot the narrow streets surrounding the property; a swimming pool just ten minutes away by car; the sea at arm's reach; a wood burning pizza truck that rolls into town twice a week; boules in the leafy park across the street...need more be said? Quietude in the perfect place, and a perfectly well-equipped apartment to boot. All the essentials and much more, very clean and well-maintained, with extremely helpful hosts, even by email.

Lucky us!

Our family lived in this home from late August 2012-early July 2013 and had a wonderful time. We have two children (ages 6 and 9) and the house is a great family home. It's full of Provençal charm, comfortable and the location in the village is terrific! Puyloubier is a small gem in the South of France. The village itself is well located for people keen on quiet, beautiful views, hiking, biking and a base camp for the myriad day trip possibilities within 1.5h drive. Beth and Tony, the property owners, are attentive, kind and well organized. The house was in top-form when we arrived and Eric and Melina - the local village residents - are a wonderful resource if help is needed. I would wholeheartedly recommend this home (and a long stay!) to travellers. We've only just returned home and already have our next visit planned!

Wonderful Week in a beautiful home!

Thanks so much for such a fantastic stay in Puyloubier, a charming town that provided a perfect base to explore Mt. St. Victoire, Aix-en-Provence, Cassis, and the numerous local vineyards. We absolutely loved the house--especially the kitchen, large bedrooms, and remarkable terrace, which was perfect for lounging after a long day of hiking and exploring! The house was immaculate upon arrival and everything worked perfectly, including the wifi (very convenient), large screen television, etc. Your local contact, Eric, was very helpful, giving us great recommendations and we also felt very welcomed by the local residents of Puyloubier. Truly a dream house and village, authentic French from the boulangeries to the five star restaurant, Les Sarments. We would fully recommend this house to friends, family, and anyone looking for the ideal South of France experience. Thanks again, we hope to return!

Perfectly located house in a great little town

My family and I (wife, daughter, mother, father and one good friend) stayed in this house for one week in August. It was a great week. The house was very accommodating, the newly renovated bathroom has a huge shower and the roof terrace with BBQ was wonderful, especially at night in the summer. Cafe Saint Victoire is just 25 yards up the street with outdoor dining on a terrace with a fountain. It became routine to hike in the morning up above the town in the Saint Victoire mountain range and then relax on the terrace of the cafe for a long lunch, followed by a cappuccino, followed by a beer or a cool glass of rose, whichever the preference was that day. There is a nice park with a playground just 25 yards in the other direction, our daughter loved it. Lastly, there are two bakeries, we normally flipped a coin to decide which to go to in the morning, they are equidistant from the house, about 3 minutes on foot, and both really good (up to par for a french bakery, excellent by American standards). I should also mention that the town is inhabited by all kinds. Teenagers, twenty-somethings and many couples in their thirties with young children like us. Everyone was very friendly. Highly recommend staying here.

Best of all worlds: quaint & quiet & close to Aix

We had a marvelous week long stay in late September and loved the village and its people, who were accommodating and very warm. You can initiate a chat from the kitchen window with Puyloubier’s locals, all of whom were willing to answer questions and provide wonderful recommendations about the village and its surrounds! It was a lovely place to relax in. There are many markets (Rousset and Aubagne etc) in surrounding areas, a convenience shop in Puyloubier, and a larger supermarket in nearby Trets, also. Domaine de St. Sur winery is close by and worth a visit for their light white wine as recommended by the exuberant and fun Eric! And conveniently, the wine co-op is located across the street from the apartment and has a delicious rose! Café/bar St Victoire down the street airs EPL and European football matches. If you’re lucky, Matt will still be working summers there. He loves to practice his English, and when he is there, the café/bar could easily second as the Puyloubier tourist office, so resourceful and helpful was he! Aix en Provence, Marseille, Cassis, Les Calanques, Bandol, and Luberon (not to mention Cannes etc) are within driving distance, so you can make many interesting day trips, or choose just to relax on the roof top patio. We found several very upscale restaurants but also enjoyed BBQ-ing on the rooftop patio, or cooking in the well stocked kitchen; complete with a window box filled with fresh herbes de Provence, and a well seasoned Creuset pot! The upstairs TV room, bedrooms and bath, have all been renovated and are clean, comfortable and spacious. We hope to be back again, but for a longer stay! If we could speak French, we would even love to become neighbours!

Inspirational

I have been visiting the place several times over the last ten years and find both the location and staying in the house an amazing inspiration to my artistic and private life. The character of the authentic centuries old structure lets one experience the feeling of the life in rural France in old days .The description of the place is right on and I am eager to see the recent renovations. The village is a pearl of itself. The presence of the "Cezanne mountain", the vicinity of Cathar and Knights Templar sites, unforgettable groves of cork oak on my day trip to Monaco, The Route Napoléon, the lavender firlds and vine of course makes me plan more stays in the future. I always admired the detailed care of the place and comfort of the guests I sensed in the house. The charming modesty of the place in the past makes me plan more creative vacations in the future. I hope to meet the intellectually energizing and respectfully discreet hosts again. The most wonderful spring times I've experienced. Thanks and see you again Puyloubier ! A wonderful getaway!

We had such a lovely time in Puyloubier! We knew it would be a beautiful town and home, but the experience exceeded our expectations. The home was charming, really spacious and clean. Everyone we met was friendly and it was impossible not to relax in the welcoming town with tasty food and incredible scenery. We can't wait to return!

Experience the beauty of Southern France

Our visit to Southern France was highlighted by our stay in the beautiful village of Puyloubier. The historic house in the center of the village was everything advertised and more. The bright airy rooms punctuated with the bright colors of the region was a marvelous base for exploration of the region. A village cafe and shop just steps out the front door, two local bakeries for the freshest of bread and cakes, just added to the experience. In the heart of wine country, vineyards, wineries and the ever present shadow of Mont. Ste Victoire afforded ample opportunities for picnics and hiking. We found parking convenient and access to the highways leading to Aix and Marseilles and the southern coast easily accessible. We loved the house itself, there is plenty of space to relax. It was clean, fully stocked with all the necessities to cook and the local caretakers were there with information and helpful hints. If you love to experience a locale on your own pace and terms and get a true picture of the region, this is a place you have to visit.

Perfect Provence Holiday Home

Our stay here was by far the highlight of our trip. It was the perfect French holiday getaway for our family (including a 7 month old baby). We knew little about Puyloubier before our trip, but it is now one of our most favourite spots! Puyloubier is nestled into the side of the spectacular Mont Ste Victoire and surrounded by rolling vineyards. It is a beautiful small town, which has everything you would want: a café to get your espresso, a bakery to pick up a fresh baguette, a playground for kids to enjoy, an ATM, a small grocery store, and a 5 star gourmet restaurant with some of the best food we have every tasted! Puyloubier is the perfect springboard to explore Provence. We spent our days hiking the breathtaking mountains, resting at the beaches, tasting wine in the local vineyards, walking the local markets and eating and drinking in the nearby historic cities. There is something for everyone – the hard part is deciding what not to do! Fortunately, there was lots of good information at the house to help us decide. Melina and Eric, two bilingual locals, also provided us with all sorts of helpful information. They were there to greet us upon arrival and checked in regularly. It was particularly wonderful to bump into a friendly face around town and helped us feel at home. The home itself mirrors the town: it has retained its authentic feel without feeling contrived while having all the comfy and luxurious amenities you would want. It sometimes felt surreal to wake up in our comfy bed in Provence, open our shutter window to another sunny day and wander downstairs to enjoy another great meal in a perfectly rustic kitchen. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us and we cannot wait to return soon.

Why they chose this property

This village is the ideal location in southern france, and benefits from a vibrant civic life, with 120 local clubs and activities, including films, music and theatrical events throughout the year. We love the local wine, restaurants, hikes and most of all the scenery, which is spectacular throughout the year.

What makes this property unique

The views from the terrasse are wonderful, and the sunsets spectacular. We love the peace and quiet, and the proximity to transit, hiking and great food, wine and restaurants.
