About this property

Peaceful Mountain Cottage, Deck with Gazebo near Stream

"The Fox Den" (now limited to 2 persons total) is a peaceful mountain cottage nestled in a valley, above a creek, just down from Deep Gap on the Black Mountain Ridge Crest Trail that leads to Mount Mitchell, tallest mountain east of the Rockies. This is a nice big place, now limited to two persons. 'Great for a couple, 2 friends, or parent-child outing. Enjoy the all wood interior, the deck with gazebo that feels like a treehouse above a mountain stream. Cottage equipped with kitchen, full bath, bedrooms, (maximum 2 persons total), deck with gazebo, 2 swings under the house, fire pit and Japanese garden.

This is a real getaway space, great for relaxing and being with the ones you love. Burnsville and stores are 11 miles away. Nearby are crafts, gifts and groceries, hiking trails and rivers. 45 miles from Asheville with its city attractions. Lounge and dine on the deck in the gazebo, enjoy the fun master bedroom, and listen to the mountain stream down below. Take a deep breath. No pets please. Restore. Refresh. Relax.

Guest access

You have the entire home all to yourselves, with kitchen, full bath, bedrooms, (maximum 2 persons total), deck with gazebo, stone patio, plus 2 swings under the house, and Japanese garden. Area has: nice 4 to 20 minute walk along the creek right from Fox Den, or hike 2 hours up to Deep Gap right up the hill, or 6 hour hike to Mount Mitchell (leave a car there), Burnsville, Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, groceries, theater, restaurants, arts and craft studios and stores.

Interaction with guests:

You are on your own, and I can be reached easily.

Other things to note:

This is a fun, rustic mountain cottage. The interior is all wood floors and walls except the master bedroom with carpet and white walls. It is a small cozy place with three dining areas outside, two swings, and the deck.
You have the whole place to yourselves with your own kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, living room, deck, gazebo, and under the cottage are two swings also for your private use.
The well water here is different from city water. It is rich in minerals and has a high iron content. It is clean and safe, but most people prefer bottled water. We provide a jug of drinking water. Welcome to the mountains!

Amazing hospitality and great place for a mountain get-away! -Samuel April 2019

Ron was very courteous and responsive. Cabin would be a great base for hiking in the Mt Mitchell area. -James April 2019

Very sweet spot! We were there in the winter and stayed very warm! Gorgeous location, just a short drive away from a nearby town with coffee shops, groceries, fly fishing shops, etc.

I’d definitely return in the summer! - Kate

Our stay was absolutely wonderful. Such a beautiful place in the mountains. My family and I enjoyed every second at the Fox den. We had campfires and told spooky stories and went hiking to several waterfalls. We drove into Asheville which is only an hour away and had a fun time looking through all the shops. We will definitely be back! -Sarah October 2018

Fox Den

We enjoyed our stay at the Fox den. It was very pleasant, quiet and neat! It is not on the main stream of things to do, but if you are looking for some R & R, and that was what we were looking for, some rest and relaxation, then this is the place to be!

This cottage is wonderful, cozy and just what I wanted, even a swing outside. It was such a calm space, tucked away in the woods. I LOVED IT! Best VRBO yet. And the owner was incredibly helpful. I hope to book it again!

Beautiful cabin in a good location

My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay here. The cabin is cozy with plenty of fox themed decorations and a deck that's great for taking in some fresh air. The cabin is in a nice, quiet location. The creek running behind it provides background noise great for falling asleep or just relaxing. Overall, this is a nice cabin to stay in.

Warm and fuzzy!

I really enjoyed this cabin....it was very peaceful and included everything we needed to be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Mornings on the deck with coffee, and the outdoor showers were both highlights! Ron is a very accommodating and friendly host. This is a quiet, warm and comfortable get-a-way, I hope to return in the near future.

Hiking Trip

We were there to spend some time in the mountains and do some hiking. It was a great location, reasonably priced, and had everything we needed for our stay. It was really nice to be able to sit outside on the deck in the evening for dinner. My son had a great time in the creek. We would definitely stay here again.

Nice place to do local hikes

Great little place! Nothing fancy, but has all you need. The creek below was very nice. We were close to our hikes in Mt. Mitchell area. Burnsville wasn't far and we enjoyed Home place brewery after our hiking. Would definitely stay again. Thanks Ron!

Great Basecamp for exploring the area

I booked this spot as a place to stay before running Quest for the Crest at Mt. Mitchell. Communication w Ron was excellent. The cabin was well located and safe. I was able to easily explore trails within a 90 min drive along the AT. The creek sounds so nice!

Lovely Relaxing Stay

Fox Den was the perfect cabin to use as a base to explore the neighborhood and surrounding areas. I nice hike out the front door led us to Twin Falls, which was iced over! The cabin had everything we needed and was very cozy and clean. Board games were used with the kids every night, as was the Netflix and internet. Highly rexommend.

Short and Sweet

Very cute and cozy home right next to Cattail Creek. Owner has left many touches to ensure a great stay. Even if it happens to rain on your visit don't worry there's plenty to do in the house with board games and such. I will most definitely be booking again. Thanks Ron

Pleasant place to stay near the Black Mountains

Nice vacation cottage in a quiet area but within 20 minutes of Burnsville, NC. Cell phone phone signal is not very good, but can be used through the property's WiFi. Very good instructions were sent by the property manager regarding the property and things to do in the area (although more details on the rough trail to access to the creek would have been nice)

Had to find hotel

We stayed one night but we had to find a hotel for the remainder four nights because there was mold in the house especially in the bathroom and the musty smell was unpleasant. Everything else was great and we took a long hike from the house.

About the host

Hosted by Ron Moore

Host profile image
I grew up traveling. I'm a musician and my parents were missionaries in Korea, so world travel was normal for me from the get go. Staying in people's homes, hotels, and my own homes has given me an appreciation of feeling "at home", and a creative, fun use of space. I spend part of my time in Asheville, NC, and often stay at the Fox Den thinking of new ways to please my guests, and enjoying this simple and surprising special place.

Why they chose this property

The Fox Den was a getaway "love nest" for a couple from Asheville. They loved to come up to be alone together, to write, and to "do nothing". Sadly the husband passed away. To keep the dream alive it continues to be a "love nest" for couples, families or just you. The Fox Den is in a long established community of people who wanted to get away from it all. It is a safe and peaceful neighborhood - great for a casual stroll along the stream, or for serious hiking along the Black Mountain Ridge Crest Trail. The valley has a long history of logging roads that wind up the mountain that are now very nice hiking trails.

What makes this property unique

I fell in love with The Fox Den for its tranquility, with my favorite place being out on the deck over the stream. Inside, I put the couch and easy chairs facing each other for conversation. I thought of not having a TV, but have succumbed with a nice TV and smart DVD player that gets internet services. Outside the house there are no less than four dining areas and two swings. The deck itself is great for a few hours of sun, and bright stars at night. We get a lot of hikers, and folks who want to visit Asheville, but want to avoid the crowds and higher prices, and just want to relax quietly when they come "home". Families like the strolls through the forested neighborhood, the creek, fishing, and nearby crafts and outdoor activities. It's simple, just rustic enough, and people say their experience here borders on the magical. That's nice to hear. It really makes me happy when i read the wonderful guest notes of what a nice time people had.
