About this property

The Gazette Condo 200 : A Spacious 2BD/2.5BA in the Epicenter Overlooking Park

Step into the shadow of history, follow in the steps of the greats, and meet us at the intersection of the Gilded Age and present day.

Welcome The Gazette Condo 200 at 120 College Street in The Asheville Times Building.

By any stick and by every measure, this is Asheville’s most esteemed address. This is where creativity marks prestige and walls do talk. This is the focal point of creative energies and historic importance, artistic wanderings and entertainment prowess.

FAST, LOCAL SERVICE
Customer service is the cornerstone of our business. We know it begins with your very first email and doesn’t stop until you’ve checked out, a smile on your face.

So, here’s our promise: You’re our priority. We want you to have a fantastic time in Asheville and at 120 College Street. That’s why we’re 100% local – just minutes away, should the need arise! – and available 24/7 and always quick to respond to any request in addition to our tech guru who is on hand at a moment’s notice, in case any issues arise. We promise, we won’t leave you hanging.

And that means, no vacation rental nightmares. If you’re locked out, we’re there! If the washing machine breaks down mid-wash, we’re there! Or, if you’re just desperate for a restaurant recommendation, we’re also there. Just a call away, whenever you need us.

Each unit is professionally cleaned by the #1 voted cleaning company in Asheville: Rest assured 120 College Street was cleaned using only Earth-friendly green products and perfume-free detergents, by a staff that receives a living wage.

Bottom line: We know that the details – the big AND small details – are what count. They can make or break your vacation. So, we’re committed. Committed to you and your Asheville experience. (Reviews don’t lie!)

We look forward to welcoming you to Asheville!

Welcome

Welcome to the Asheville Times Building @ 120 College Street, the historic and cultural center of downtown Asheville and former home to the city’s first newspaper. Welcome to a historic building that still unfolds over original hardwood floors, five-panel doors, antique doorknobs, banisters, and railings.

Welcome to a home-away-from home above a museum and a multi-level amazing view overlooking Pack Square Park. A downtown condo, footsteps to fine restaurants and trendy nightlife, art galleries and antique shops.

Yes, it’s safe to say – this is it. You’ve found it.

Over 1,400 square-feet of historic space, The Gazette Condo 200 offers a blend of antique and contemporary furnishings, neutral tones and bright pops of color, solid woods and airy windows, architectural touches and high design. This is everything you never knew you needed in your downtown Asheville experience.

And indeed, downtown Asheville is here, RIGHT here. Walk out your door and you’re on College Street, the historic center of Asheville and jumping-off point for art walks and ghost tours, microbrew flights and year-round festivals, fine dining and museum-hopping. You’re in the middle of it all and exactly where you want to be.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
Walk into the shadow of history (and of the iconic Jackson Building), and you immediately feel the pull: 120 College Street is a place where old meets new, where history blends seamlessly with today – where a contemporary patina adds depth to the monuments, parks, and stories that have resided here for more than a century. Indeed, this is a kind of wanderlust (and wonder-lust) completely and uniquely ours. Welcome to Asheville!

Here, in remarkable downtown, College Street is one of the most historic-yet-hip addresses in the city – a promenade that straddles the ephemeral boundaries between old-world charm and modern style.

And 120 College Street is at the center of it all: above the Black Mountain College Museum and overlooking the Jackson Building, across from Roger McGuire Green in front of City Hall and the County Building, and Pack Square Park with a large open green space on a slope leading to the main stage, three water features including a splash fountain and original art by regional artists. There are many seating areas surrounded by native trees and shrubs. This beautiful 6.5-acre public space is an extra amenity for visitors to relax and linger. This is Asheville history, respectfully updated for the 21st century.

So, while Real Life may be about compromise – sacrifice This to get That – we believe that vacation should be a special time. This is when you get both This and That, no compromise required.

The Gazette Condo 200 in the Asheville Times Building at 120 College Street is your no-compromise-required destination: at the intersection of past and present, in the shadow of the Jackson Building and Pack Square Park, and enveloped by the energy and charm of downtown life. It embodies and embraces the Asheville scene – a scene that draws designers and artists, creatives and music lovers, foodies and artisanal beverage aficionados alike.

Here’s what awaits:

Dining: Asheville is a food-and-drink dream – there’s a reason Livability named us a Top 10 Foodie City! – and from 120 College Street, you’re just minutes to much of your must-eat list, including French Broad Chocolate Lounge, Curate, Sovereign Remedies, Twisted Laurel, Over Easy Cafe, City Bakery, Bouchon, Mela, and Rhubarb.

Culture: There’s nothing quite like Asheville culture to put some pep in your step and some erudition in your life. Be sure to schedule stops at the Black Mountain College Museum (your downstairs neighbor!) and the Asheville Art Museum. Finally, don’t forget to checkout a show at The Orange Peel or The Grey Eagle!

History: From 120 College Street, you’re just minutes to many of Asheville’s historic landmarks, including the (former) Vance Memorial, Monument Corner, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, and Asheville’s historic Flatiron Building, not to mention numerous statues, plaques, and monuments that commemorate the city’s past.

Urban Trail Art & History Tour: Art and history lovers, walk into history on Asheville’s Urban Trail, a 1.7-mile walking tour home to 30+ stops at creative landmarks, public sculptures, dioramas, and more. It begins at Pack Place, almost at your front door! The renowned Blue Spiral 1 Gallery and Momentum Gallery are a couple of blocks away and the Black Mountain College Museum is right downstairs.

Festivals: From Downtown After Five (once a month, in summer) and the Lexington Avenue Arts Fest, to Drum Circle and Art in the Park, downtown Asheville and the River Arts District are ripe with arts, culture, and creative pursuits.

FAMILIES & GROUPS WELCOME
Traveling with other families or as a group? Good news! We manage three condos at the 120 College Street: The Gazette 200 (2BR), The Daily 201 (1BR), and The News 202 (1BR), with a total of 4 bedrooms to accommodate 8 guests.
Stay close (but not too close!) to your friends and loved ones.

EASY PARKING

When it comes to parking, 120 College Street could just as easily be name Easy Street: parking here is simple! And that’s exactly how it should be, when you’re on vacation.

You don’t need a car to enjoy downtown Asheville (our Walk Score: 86 – “Very Walkable”!), but if you bring one, here are your options:

Parking Lots: Just west of 120 College Street is a pay per space parking, at the corner of College Street and N. Market Street. Enter off N. Market Street and Lagreen Alley and pay $2/hr, 1 hour minimum, $20 maximum per calendar day. Directly beside 120 College St (formerly, the Majestic Theatre), is where you can easily unload your bags, near the building’s entrance, however please note the sign regarding reserved spaces for specific times and days . This lot directly beside the building is only open to the public after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on weekends ($5 per day/entry). If you’re looking for a more long-term solution, the 9 N. Market St/Lagreen Alley parking lot is the closet, just remember it expires after 12 hrs. Pay from your phone with the app, or by space / cash at the kiosk box. (Ask us for more details, if you need them.)

Renaissance Hotel parking lot is a large paved parking area, with an entrance that is occasionally open off College Street (across the street from the City/County Plaza) and also with an entrance/exit off of Woodfin Street. It is a $20 flat rate, except for special events.

Parking Decks: Our preferred parking option! The nearest public parking garage is located at 164 College Street. Both the City of Asheville and Buncombe County operate safe, reliable and inexpensive parking decks. The first half hour is free, $2/hr each additional hour or a portion thereof and the full-day rate is just $20, so feel free to leave your vehicle overnight. There are several parking decks within walking distance of 120 College Street; we’ll send all the details with your booking confirmation.

On-Street Parking: There are more than 700 on-street metered parking spaces in downtown Asheville. All meters are for short-term parking (two hours or less, as marked), at a cost of $1.50 per hour. On-street metered parking is free on holidays, Sundays, and every day after 6 pm. Again, you can easily pay for metered parking via the PassportParking app.

Loading Zones: If you’re arriving via taxi, Uber, or Lyft, feel free to unload in one of Asheville’s dedicated loading zones, limited to 30 minutes (or less, as marked).

If parking is a concern, feel free to email us. We are more than happy to help you find the right parking location at 120 College Street!

My husband and I took a quick trip to Asheville for a concert and wished we stayed a little longer. This stay was wonderful. Great location, very clean, and easy check in/out process. I would definitely recommend and stay again.

Perfect location
The property and location are 5 star. Very clean. Well done modern renovation in a historic setting. Unique 2 level space that allowed a nice main level gathering space. Parking was easiest for us at the $12 a day public deck one block away at 164 College. The only con is not with the property but is from a few loud cars who like to make laps (one of which is College St) around downtown Asheville from 7-10. This stopped around 10-11 while we were there and we didn't have any noises interrupting our sleep.

great location
the four of us really enjoyed the space. Some things which really stood out were the kitchen, the living space, bedrooms and all the bathrooms. These were all very spacious and clean. We enjoyed occupying all the space. It was great having the main floor bathroom. To nitpick some things the bed and pillows were not comfortable and felt cheap. The cable TVs sucked and should be replaced with streaming options. We didn't stay in much making these not matter much to us.

Loved the Condo
The condo was spacious and beautifully appointed. It had great access to downtown and we walked most everywhere. Parking required some effort to feed the street meters, which were only $1.50 an hour but only allowed 2 hours in one spot. After 6:00 pm the meters are free.

A great location in Downtown Asheville!
This property is great! Right downtown, across from Pack Square Park. The pictures are accurate. Super clean and clutter free - vintage with modern updates and decor. We loved it. We had a couple of hiccups, but swift intervention from the owners remedied those. Pack light - 25 stairs up is more than you think! Lots of nice extras are supplied (coffee filters, spices, small coffemate creamers, laundry detergent, zip lock bags) - more than in other properties I've rented. The kitchen is so well stocked with dishes, pots, pans, utensils and very organized. The water pressure was great. This little gem is great for those wanting to stay within walking distance of so many things and a nice place to relax while enjoying Asheville.

For those wanting a central location in the city, this is the place to stay. Amenities and beds were great as well, and we always received prompt communication. Highly recommend!

Great Location, Super Clean & Very Well Stocked
We stayed for a weekend in July as a family of four - two parents and two adult children. The layout worked well for us as our kids each had their own bed:) The condo is very nicely decorated and very well stocked. Everything we needed was easy to find. The instructions on where to park and how to access were easy to follow. The location of this condo is perfect for visiting Asheville and enjoying the great restaurants and breweries. We were pleasantly surprised how close it was to everything we wanted to do. We only used our car once during our stay to venture out to Sierra Nevada. Everything else was easily walkable. It appears a prior guest complained about the noise. It is located in downtown Asheville so there will be noise. If you want something quiet and serene, perhaps you shouldn't stay downtown. But Asheville in no NYC - much more tame. The unit had window barriers to help reduce the noise as well as a sound machine. They even provided ear plugs - which we didn't need. None of us had any issues sleeping. The most pleasant surprise was how accessible the property management team was for us. We encountered an issue while we were staying. They were quick to respond and worked diligently to resolve the situation. Although it couldn't be completely resolved during our stay, they were more than fair in handling the situation. We will certainly book another rental from this management solely based on how they handle this situation.

The property itself was lovely. The noise is unrelenting. Ambulances day and night, construction next door starts at 7am with the music from the bar next door playing until about 3am. Even with noise machines and ear plugs, it was difficult to get any rest

Great rental in a great location but not the
Overall, we had a great stay in Asheville. The property was clean, well equipped, and in a great location, surrounded by downtown. I visited with my boyfriend and another couple that had a newborn so it was great to walk around during the day and have a place to lay low together at night. I was traveling with my service animal and received a call during our stay from Sarah (or her managing team). My boyfriend answered my phone at the time since I had not been feeling well and kept getting a call from the same number. He was completely caught off guard by what he described as an aggressive confrontation for having my service animal with us without any notice. In any of my experiences, reservations have indicated that service animals are completely different from pets and are an exception that is able to be with you for any stay. I have never experienced any issues traveling with my service animal so it was incredibly alarming and uncomfortable hearing about the conversation.

Amazing!
We had a very, very good time. Location is very central and pretty much everything is in walking distance. The appartment is very nice, spacious, very clean, thoughtfully laid out and furnished. It has got everything you need. We had high expectations - and it was even better. Does not happen often. People were very helpful and friendly. Noise level might be an issue on weekends as there is a club next door (we were there during the week) and a fire station is just a block away. But they provide ear plugs on the bedside table - it has got everything you need. 5 stars !

Why they chose this property

☀☀☀ A Piece of History ☀☀☀
There’s nothing quite so Ashville as staying in a living piece of history. Specifically, a living piece of history where local news writers and makers once plied their craft!

We’ll tell you a little story. The 1880-1930 era was a pivotal time in Asheville’s history: This was the Gilded Age, a post-industrial and pre-Depression age that welcomed the railroad, grandiose living, urban development, and the creative minds of O. Henry, Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and others. Asheville rode so high it almost side-stepped the Great Depression.

The Asheville Times Building @ 120 College Street was originally built in 1914 for the Asheville Gazette (later, the Asheville Times), occupied 120 College Street until the 1930’s.

—————————————————

Fun fact: In 1929, Thomas Wolfe would forever immortalize this time in his highly autobiographical first novel “Look Homeward, Angel,” a coming-of-age story that mirrored his life in Asheville and experiences at his mother’s famous boardinghouse, Dixieland, "the most famous boardinghouse in American fiction.” Just two blocks north on Market Street is the restored Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site and welcomes visitors Tuesday-Saturday.
